The History and Origin of Dill Chicken Salad

Dill Chicken Salad is a relatively modern adaptation of classic chicken salad recipes, blending the traditional comfort of shredded chicken with a bright, herbaceous twist from fresh dill. Chicken salad itself has roots tracing back to European cuisine, particularly England and France, where combining cooked poultry with mayonnaise or cream-based dressings became popular in the 19th century. The addition of dill likely emerged in American kitchens in the mid-20th century, inspired by the growing availability of fresh herbs and a trend toward lighter, fresher flavors in salads. This recipe exemplifies the evolution of simple, home-cooked dishes into more sophisticated yet accessible meals.

Regional Variations

While Dill Chicken Salad is most commonly associated with American cuisine, regional interpretations exist. In the Midwest, it is often served with added nuts such as pecans or walnuts for texture. In coastal regions, especially in the Northeast, a touch of lemon or apple cider vinegar enhances its brightness, complementing the fresh seafood-centric cuisine of the area. Southern versions sometimes incorporate sweet elements like dried cranberries or a small amount of sugar to balance the tang of dill and citrus. These regional touches make each version unique while maintaining the core appeal of the dish.

Differences from Similar Dishes

What sets Dill Chicken Salad apart from other chicken salads is its emphasis on fresh dill and a balance of creamy and citrus flavors. Traditional chicken salad often relies on a simple mixture of mayonnaise and chicken, sometimes with celery or onion. By contrast, Dill Chicken Salad combines Greek yogurt and mayonnaise for a lighter, tangier texture, while the dill adds a distinctive aromatic note. Toasted pecans or other nuts can add a subtle crunch, distinguishing it further from standard creamy chicken salads or tuna-based alternatives.

Typical Serving Occasions

Dill Chicken Salad is versatile and can be enjoyed in various settings. It is frequently served as a light lunch, either on its own or in a sandwich with fresh bread, croissants, or rolls. It is also a popular choice for picnic menus, potlucks, and brunch buffets, where its fresh flavor stands out among heavier dishes. In some households, it is even served as a topping for green salads, offering a protein-rich option that is both satisfying and refreshing. The combination of ease and elegance makes it a staple for casual and festive occasions alike.

Interesting Facts

  • The use of dill in American chicken salad reflects a broader 20th-century trend toward incorporating European herbs into everyday cooking.
  • Toasting nuts before adding them to the salad enhances their flavor and adds a satisfying crunch that contrasts with the creamy texture of the dressing.
  • Substituting Greek yogurt for part of the mayonnaise not only lightens the salad but also increases its protein content.
  • This salad can be made ahead of time, allowing the flavors of dill, lemon, and chicken to meld overnight, often resulting in an even more flavorful dish.
  • Despite its simplicity, the dish allows for endless customization, from adding sweet cranberries to incorporating spices like cayenne for a subtle kick.

I love this recipe. However, as another reviewer stated, no need for sugar, it was wonderful without.

My family loved this! Per the other reviewers recommendations I decided to skip the sugar and it worked well. I also added a smidge of garlic powder and onion powder (since I add those to pretty much everything savory).

I'm lucky to have a huge pecan tree in my backyard. So never in short supply. I've had this many times now. As usually I had to change things out a little. Instead of yoghurt I uses sour cream or creme fraiche. I use apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice. I don't use any stock at all. And I add diced apple as well. But this is a great base for a truly great chicken salad. Oh. Don't add sugar. It's just not needed.

A perfect sandwich for summer - or, really any time but this was refreshingly wonderful for a hot July evening dinner! Subbed cashews for pecans, dried dill for fresh and added approx 1/3c minced sweet onion as I love onion in chicken salad. I don’t know what all the fuss is on the tsp of sugar; I used it and thought it went well! I also didn’t need any broth. Had it on standby but didn’t end up using. Served on Sweet Hawaiian rolls but croissants would be tantalizing too! Super easy and glad we made! Thanks TheDailyGourmet!

Fabulous! The only additions I made were to add 1/3 cup of diced red onion, 1/2 cup cranraisins, and 1/2 teas of cayenne pepper…the toasted pecans and fresh dill are perfectly balanced!

So I was expecting this to be a little more dill forward. It was just kind of blah. However, I used dried dill because that's what I had, and I didn't want to mix up a cup of chicken bullion to only use 1/4 cup of it, so I splashed in some white wine as a substitute, probably diminishing the chicken flavor. I'm hoping that after letting my batch minus one sandwich sit overnite, some of the flavors will meld a little more, and the moisture will help the dill brighten up. I also wonder if a tablespoon or two of sweet relish would be a good substitute for the white sugar to add sweetness, and a little zip.

Perfect--well, I added a few dried cranberries (I like golden raisins, too, from time to time), but the salad was perfect already. Loved the dill--which I hadn't used before--but I also like tarragon in chicken salad.

It boggles my mind why sugar has to be incorporated into just about everything so I left it out. There's no need for any sugar in the recipe.
