Buffalo Chicken Wraps Recipe

Buffalo Chicken Wraps are a modern twist on the classic buffalo chicken wings, offering the same spicy, tangy flavor but in a convenient, handheld wrap form. This dish has quickly become a favorite in American cuisine, particularly for casual dining and game-day events.

History and Origin

The dish is inspired by the famous buffalo wings, which originated in Buffalo, New York, in the 1960s. The original buffalo wing was created at the Anchor Bar, where they deep-fried chicken wings and then tossed them in a sauce made from hot sauce and butter. Over time, buffalo wings became a popular appetizer in bars and restaurants across the U.S.

The buffalo chicken wrap is a more recent invention, likely emerging in the 1990s as a quick and portable way to enjoy the same spicy flavor without the mess of traditional wings. It takes the essence of buffalo chicken and wraps it in a tortilla, making it easier to eat on the go, particularly appealing for those who love buffalo wings but want a less greasy option.

Regional Variations

While buffalo chicken wraps are common across the United States, their ingredients and variations can vary by region. In the Midwest, for example, some people prefer adding ranch dressing instead of the classic blue cheese, while in the South, people might add a touch of barbecue sauce to balance the heat. Some variations also include toppings like shredded cheese, tomatoes, or even crispy fried onions. In some areas, the wrap might even be served in a deep-fried tortilla for added crunch.

What Sets Buffalo Chicken Wraps Apart

Buffalo Chicken Wraps stand out due to their distinctive combination of spicy, tangy hot sauce paired with creamy blue cheese dressing or ranch, all wrapped in a soft tortilla. This differs from the classic buffalo wings, which are typically served with a side of blue cheese dressing for dipping and require utensils. Another unique feature of the wrap is its versatility. Unlike buffalo wings, which are usually served as a starter or appetizer, buffalo chicken wraps can be a complete meal, easily customizable to suit different tastes.

Furthermore, the wrap version is more convenient for those who prefer a less messy, more portable meal. It also allows for the inclusion of additional vegetables, such as lettuce and celery, which adds a fresh crunch and balances the spiciness of the buffalo sauce.

Where to Serve Buffalo Chicken Wraps

Buffalo Chicken Wraps are perfect for a variety of occasions. They are often served at casual gatherings, such as tailgates, barbecues, and game-day parties. Due to their ease of preparation and ability to be eaten without utensils, they make an excellent choice for casual lunch or dinner. In restaurants, you may also find them offered as part of the "wrap" section on the menu, especially in places where buffalo wings are a popular dish.

These wraps are also ideal for meal prep, allowing you to make them ahead of time and enjoy them later. Whether served as a quick weeknight dinner or a fun addition to a party platter, buffalo chicken wraps never fail to impress with their bold flavors.

Fun Facts About Buffalo Chicken Wraps

  • The first buffalo wings were created in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, and the dish quickly spread across the U.S.
  • While traditionally buffalo wings are fried, the chicken in buffalo wraps is often pan-seared or grilled, providing a healthier alternative.
  • Some variations of buffalo chicken wraps use grilled chicken, tofu, or even cauliflower for a vegetarian take on the dish.
  • Buffalo Chicken Wraps are commonly paired with side dishes like fries, onion rings, or fresh vegetable sticks for a complete meal.
  • The heat of the hot sauce can vary greatly depending on the brand used, allowing you to adjust the spice level to your preference.

Whether you're a buffalo sauce aficionado or just looking for a quick and flavorful meal, the buffalo chicken wrap delivers all the satisfaction of a traditional buffalo wing but in a more convenient and customizable form.

This has got to be one of hubby's favorite meals. I make a buffalo sauce with 1/4 cup of melted butter and about 1/3 cup of hot sauce, and then season the sauce with some cracked pepper and garlic powder. Top it with lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese (preferably monterey jack), and ranch dressing and I have a happy husband.

Speaking as a fan of buffalo sauce in general, this is a great recipe. I used a 12 oz bag of Quorn-brand meatless pieces and Sweet Baby Ray's Buffalo Wing Sauce as the key ingredients. Instead of celery I added green onion to my portion of romaine lettuce. I also added chopped garlic to the "meat" during the last couple minutes of cooking. I fully expect I'll use this recipe again.

This was a big hit! I used organic chicken Tendenders from Food lion. Boiled them and cooled them, then cut them into 1/4 in pieces. Pan fried them with FL cooking spray (0gm everything) with Texas peat hot sauce and organic ground cumin until well coated and hot, put them on side burner on low. I used Spinach and herb tortilla wraps heated in a large pan per directions. Removed from Pan placed seasoned chicken, Chilled Ro-Tel original diced tomatoes and green chilies, Black beans, and Food lion Mexican four cheese blend. Wrapped them an cut in half. Drizzled Texas Peat Hot Sauce on top for those who wanted extra Kick. Defiantly Recommend!

This was perfect! So easy and delicious. My picky daughter asked if it could be in our regular dinner rotation!! She doesn’t care for Buffalo sauce, so I made two batches...one with buffalo and the other bbq. My husband grilled the chicken and when it was done, I cut it up and tossed with sauce and made the wraps. Everyone loved them. So good!

Very good wrap! A quick, easy and tasty meal. I melted the butter first then added the oil some diced onions and then the chicken. I used leftover rotisserie chicken breast because I was looking for a way to use it up. We topped our chicken with ranch, celery, tomatoes and lettuce. Great for lunch or dinner.

I did a little different. I seasoned my chicken with salt and pepper and baked. While baking i heated franks hot sauce and butter with pepper and a little sugar. I tossed the chicken in that after the chicken was rested and cut. I also used ranch instead of blue cheese. Just my preference. I also added raw onion to the wrap thinly sliced

Everyone loved this. I like that you can customize it to each persons liking. I added blue cheese dressing to my husbands and mine but not the kids because they don't like blue cheese. For them I used buffalo-ranch dressing, though plain ranch would be good too. Made some changes. I boiled the chicken with salt, garlic and onions instead of cooking in butter and I used buffalo sauce instead of hot sauce. For myself, since I don't eat meat, I sautéed tofu in buffalo sauce. Also I added rice to the wraps for added substance and some shredded cheese. Okay so I made quite a few changes and some people may complain that I shouldn't rate the recipe because of that but without the basic recipe I never would have made this so this gets five stars from me.

Absolutely delicious. A big hit in my house. Added 1 chopped tomato. Baked 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts and cut to small strips and sautéed with celery for a few minutes. Added 2 teaspoons of melted butted with 1/3 cup Louisiana wing sauce. Topped with ranch dressing and cheese. Served with seasoned fries. Yum yum yum!!!

I'm not a fan of tons of blue cheese so I used ranch dressing and mozzarella cheese.

I made this for the grandsons. They loved it. Have to admit I cheated and used cooked chicken tenders from the deli.
