Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes Recipe

Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes Recipe

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces baby gold potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 400F (200C).

Step 2: Place the potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl and cook on high for about 5 minutes, until they are just tender.

Step 3: Transfer the cooked potatoes to a baking sheet. Use the bottom of a small glass to gently smash the potatoes, pressing them to about 3/4 or 1/2 inch thick. The thinner you flatten them, the crispier they will turn out.

Step 4: Brush the smashed potatoes with the melted butter. Season with salt, garlic powder, and freshly ground black pepper.

Step 5: Arrange the smashed potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

Step 6: Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve hot.

The Origins of Smashed Potatoes

Smashed potatoes have roots in traditional European cuisine, where small, tender potatoes were often boiled or roasted and then slightly crushed to create a crisp exterior while maintaining a fluffy interior. This technique became popular in the United States in the early 20th century as a practical way to transform leftover boiled potatoes into a versatile side dish. The modern "air fryer" version of smashed potatoes is a recent innovation, combining this classic method with contemporary cooking technology to produce a faster, healthier, and equally crispy result.

Regional Variations and Characteristics

While the basic concept of smashed potatoes remains the same, different regions have added their own touches. In the United States, particularly in the Midwest and South, smashed potatoes are often seasoned with garlic, rosemary, and butter, making them rich and aromatic. In European countries like France and Germany, they are sometimes tossed with olive oil and herbs such as thyme or parsley, highlighting a lighter, herbaceous flavor. The air fryer adaptation has allowed for a uniform crispiness without excessive oil, making it popular in urban kitchens where convenience is essential.

How They Differ from Similar Dishes

Smashed potatoes might seem similar to roasted, baked, or mashed potatoes, but they are unique in texture and preparation. Unlike mashed potatoes, they retain their shape and develop a crispy crust on the outside while staying soft inside. Compared to roasted potatoes, smashed potatoes are slightly thinner and offer more surface area for seasoning and crisping. The air fryer method also distinguishes them from traditional oven-baked versions, providing a crunchier exterior without deep frying.

Where They Are Commonly Served

Smashed potatoes are extremely versatile and appear in many dining contexts. They are a favorite side dish at family dinners, casual gatherings, and holiday meals. In restaurants, especially gastropubs and modern American bistros, they are often paired with steak, grilled chicken, or roasted vegetables. Thanks to the air fryer method, they have also become popular as a quick appetizer or snack at home, sometimes served with dipping sauces such as aioli, sour cream, or spicy ketchup.

Interesting Facts and Tips

  • The thinner the potatoes are smashed, the crispier they become in the air fryer, creating a texture reminiscent of potato chips.
  • Using baby potatoes or small gold potatoes ensures uniform cooking and a tender interior.
  • Although called "smashed," they are gently pressed rather than completely flattened to maintain a fluffy core.
  • Many home cooks add creative toppings like shredded cheese, bacon bits, or zaatar seasoning for additional flavor.
  • This dish perfectly demonstrates how modern kitchen appliances like air fryers can update traditional recipes for faster and healthier cooking without sacrificing taste.

Awesome recipe! I doubled and because of it, had to do in two batches in my air fryer. I did one half exactly as written and half with a sprinkle of za-tar seasoning (in addition to the other spices). Me personally - I think the Za-tar gives these just a smidge more flavor pop but, as written - great side dish! Like a hybrid of potato chip, potato wedge and French fry! This went well with the steaks we had! My only concern/change - can you cook these in the microwave without piercing them first? I didn’t dare so I poked each one a couple times plus - since I doubled, microwaved closer to 8 minutes- stirring halfway through. Maybe that’s an old wives tale but I didn’t want to take any chances. Overall - super easy and awesome recipe Nicole Russell!! Thank you!

I saw this recipe a while back, and finally made the potatoes. I agree with another review that said to pierce the potatoes before microwaving them. I used a mixed bag of mini potatoes and found that the larger ones needed more time in the micro than the recipe suggested. I thought the recipe also used too much salt. All that said, we really enjoyed the potatoes and I will definitely make this recipe again.

These were delicious! Great way to use little potatoes, you know those pesky ones that you don't want to peel lol. I added grated cheese in the last 2 minutes of cooking

So easy and flavorful! I mixed a little garlic olive oil in with the butter to baste the potatoes before they hit the air fryer. Otherwise, perfect as is!
