Mom's Baking Powder Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons shortening
  • cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon melted shortening, or as needed (Optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450F (230C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir well to mix the dry ingredients evenly.
  3. Add the shortening to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the shortening into the flour until it forms small, pea-sized pieces.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk, a little at a time, mixing after each addition until the dough comes together into a ball.
  5. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to a thickness of to inch.
  6. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out biscuits of your desired size.
  7. If desired, dip each biscuit into melted shortening before placing it on an ungreased baking sheet.
  8. Arrange the biscuits on the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

To Make Shortcakes

If you want to make shortcakes, add 2 tablespoons of sugar with the dry ingredients in step 2. Then, roll the dough out to -inch thick in step 3.
