This recipe yields 20 servings and is perfect for a simple yet delicious homemade apple compote.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples - peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 cup water
  • cup dark brown sugar
  • cup white sugar (or less to taste)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice (or more to taste)
  • 1 (3 inch) piece cinnamon stick
  • 4 strips lemon zest
  • teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. In a large pot, combine the apples, water, brown sugar, white sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, lemon zest, and salt. Stir well to mix the ingredients evenly.
  2. Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the apples for 20 to 30 minutes, or until they are soft and easily break apart.
  4. Remove the pot from heat and discard the cinnamon stick and lemon zest strips.
  5. Using a potato masher, mash the apples until you reach your desired consistency. If you prefer a smoother texture, continue mashing or use an immersion blender.
