Funeral Sandwiches Recipe

Funeral Sandwiches Recipe

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 pound thinly sliced ham
  • pound sliced Swiss cheese
  • 2 (12 count) packages Hawaiian bread rolls (such as King's)
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds

Directions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375F (190C). Begin by spraying a cookie sheet with cooking spray to ensure the sliders dont stick.

Step 2: Carefully place a slice of ham and Swiss cheese on the bottom half of each bread roll. Once each roll is filled, cover them with the top halves. Arrange the filled rolls evenly on the prepared cookie sheet.

Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and poppy seeds. Stir until the ingredients are well combined.

Step 4: Spoon the butter mixture generously over the tops of the sandwich rolls, making sure each roll is evenly coated. Let the sliders sit for at least 10 minutes, or up to 1 hour to allow the flavors to soak in.

Step 5: (Optional) If youre preparing the sliders ahead of time, you can cover them and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. This step makes it easy to bake them the next day.

Step 6: Bake the sliders in the preheated oven, uncovered, for 12 to 18 minutes or until they are golden brown on top and the cheese has melted perfectly.

No matter what I write, my submission doesn’t “follow the guidelines”, and I have no idea what the guidelines are or what guideline(s) I could possibly be breaking. Too bad, I think my positive feedback would have been welcome. Hopefully I’ve managed to follow the guidelines by saying essentially nothing at all!!

So satisfying — thank you!

Taste is great. But cooking instructions are wrong. Sandwiches burn at this temperature, ruining them. Sandwiches should be covered with aluminum foil and cooked for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Then, uncover sandwiches and cook for another 10 minutes.

My husband and I really enjoy these, we will definitely make again… I didn’t have any brown sugar so replaced with honey also chopped up the honey ham to make it easier to bite into ❤️❤️❤️

I never change a recipe the first time I make it. This is so good it is perfect the way it's written. The Hawaiian rolls are just right for the butter mix and oven--the cheese melts and the outside of the roll is just a little crispy...this is a real keeper. You don't need any meat. Next time I'm going to try the southern Pimento cheese filling. There are so many options: I think you could even use Roast beef with little cheddar and horseradish.... Next time I'll experiment. I'll try fried chicken and pepper jack. The possibilities are endless.

After reading the reviews, I decided to make this recipe as written except for the cooking time. I found the quantity of cheese to be perfect as written, and ham was also sufficient (more wouldn’t hurt, but it was fine). I also quartered the pieces of ham for easier cutting and separation of the individual sandwiches, and that worked out really well. I used the full quantity of butter, which was a lot, however worked out deliciously (just be sure to serve these with napkins, as they are very buttery!). As for cooking time, definitely check between 10-15 minutes, as that was enough time for me for the tops to brown and the cheese to melt without overly browning the tops. These were a hit! The sweet taste of the Hawaiian rolls and brown sugar was nice and different, though we did end up adding some mayo to our individual sandwiches when serving to balance out the sweetness.

I cut this down to only make 4 sandwiches. It was easily scalable. I really liked the mustard/brown sugar flavor on these. I sort of missed the onion that is usually on these, but it was still fine without. I am not sure what the standing time after adding the butter/poppyseed topping was for other than to suggest that they could be prepared a day ahead. These were really good and I enjoyed them very much. My only issue was the bottoms got soggy in some places. I'd use a thinner sliced (shaved) ham next time so the ham doesn't pull out when you try to take a bite into it.

It does take longer to prepare than the time given, and from experience, covering the rolls in the oven for 3/4 of the time is prudent.

My fam calls these ham delights. There is no need to separate the rolls. Just horizontally slice the entire package with a bread knife, layer the fillings, put the top back on, brush with the mix right before baking, and bake. Then, if you're tailgating, just slide them back onto the paper tray the rolls came in and put back in the plastic bag for easy transport. They tear apart perfectly and everyone loves them.

Every time I bring them to an event they are the first item eatten. I use "Everything but the bagel" seasoning instead of poppy seeds. Delicious!

Be sure to use a ham that is not honey ham. Virginia ham is a great option. You dont want more sweetness such as honey ham. I do leave out the sugar and use a little garlic powder instead but that's just personal preference.

I’ve been using this recipe for the last 10 years for pot lucks, game days and even ladies brunches. It’s not just for funerals and I always have to double it because rvrryone wants a second sandwich

Don't use honey ham! It is too sweet with the Hawaiian rolls. Virginia ham works well here!

I would replace the poppy seeds with sprinkled bacon bits.

I grew up eating these at church functions. Sadly, I didn't have any poppy seeds and that was my favorite part as a kid. In the “olden” days, we didn't have Hawaiian dinner and rolls but did have plain yeast rolls, thus the reason for the sugar. Enjoy!

I don't know what some of these people are complaining about or saying it isn't the right recipe. I made it exactly as written and let them soak in all the goodness for an hour and baked for 13 minutes and WOW! Deliciousness! I brought the rest to work and warmed in the microwave for a minute and shared and everyone raved about them> Thank you for the recipe and ignore the Haters ; )

Very easy to put together. My girlfriends loved them at our Christmas get-together! Put them together at my home the night before; then popped them in the oven at the host's home so they were at the best temperature and fresh out of the oven. You should get rave reviews. Just watch them while they're baking to ensure the tops don't over-brown. Simple!
