Honey-Garlic Shrimp

Honey-Garlic Shrimp

Cook Time: 5 minutes

There is something undeniably comforting about indulging in Food Court favorites. The vibrant mix of flavors, the casual atmosphere, and the simple joy of enjoying a meal with plastic utensils are all part of the charm. Take honey garlic shrimp as an example simple, familiar, yet incredibly satisfying. In this recipe, we elevate it: the shrimp are generous in size and packed with flavor, far surpassing their mall counterparts.

The key to success is choosing large shrimp, ideally 16-20 count per pound, allowing a quick sear that locks in the juices and caramelizes beautifully. Smaller shrimp risk overcooking during this process. Adjust garlic and honey to taste, serve over plain white rice or a colorful vegetable noodle stir-fry, and enjoy every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound large raw shrimp (16-20 count), peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
  • 2 tablespoons mild-flavored honey
  • teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce, or more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Asian fish sauce, or to taste
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup thinly sliced green onion, or to taste

Directions

Step 1: Prep Shrimp

Ensure your shrimp are fully thawed and well-drained. Keep them chilled while preparing the marinade.

Step 2: Make the Marinade

In a medium bowl, whisk together garlic, honey, ginger, soy sauce, and fish sauce until smooth.

Step 3: Marinate Shrimp

Add the shrimp to the marinade and toss thoroughly for 2 minutes to ensure even coating. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 to 60 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Step 4: Heat the Pan

Brush a large nonstick skillet with vegetable oil and heat over high until faint wisps of smoke appear.

Step 5: Sear Shrimp

Using tongs, place shrimp in a single layer in the hot skillet. Sear for 2 minutes, then flip them over.

Step 6: Add Marinade

Pour the reserved marinade into the pan and cook for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and flip shrimp once more, letting them rest for 1 minute. The residual heat will reduce the marinade into a glossy glaze.

Step 7: Garnish and Serve

Sprinkle thinly sliced green onion over the shrimp and serve immediately with your choice of rice or noodles.

Chef Notes

  • Do not marinate longer than 1 hour, as the soy sauce can begin to cure the shrimp.
  • For a thinner sauce, dilute the glaze with a splash of water, stock, or broth.
  • This recipe yields 2 generous servings or 4 smaller portions.

The first time I made this, I followed the recipe, and it was good. The second time I made it, I substituted the honey with molasses. Also substituted the fresh ginger with a half teaspoon of powdered ginger. The results? It was a game changer! My husband loved it! Easy and delicious. This is now one of my “go to” recipes.

So simple and amazingly flavorful! I tried this on Friday night since I had all the ingredients on hand and, as one reviewer mentioned, I sautéed onion, broccoli and snow peas first. Then removed them from the pan and wiped it clean. And then I started with Chef John’s recipe (followed perfectly) added the shrimp over the veggies and we had a perfect KETO dinner. (And a dash of hot pepper flakes too 😉). How is it KETO you may ask? I used Zero Sugar Honey by Wholesome Yum. Will be making again and again!

Chef John, How can I adapt this with an air fryer? Thanks!

Chef John never disappoints!! My husband and I loved the subtle melding of all the flavors!! This is now in the rotation of dinner options. I served with rice and steamed broccoli. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! I made it a second time and doubled the marinade. This was great because it was yummy with the rice

This was really good. Loved the flavor and the ease of preparation. Excellent light dinner; can easily be made more substantial by adding snow peas, broccoli, or other vegetable.

Wife and I loved it !! Did not use the fish oil and onions... made a extra 1/2 batch of the marinade and added that to the shrimp at the end, it is thicker than what was in with the shrimp..

Quick and easy shrimp recipe. Didn’t have fish sauce so I used a little extra soy. Marinated an hour. Added cornstarch slurry at the end to thicken the sauce real quick. Was very good. Will definitely make again!

I made this recipe last night with 8-12 count tiger prawns (jumbo shrimp). Thawed them and made the marinade. I didn’t have fresh ginger so I used powdered and it seemed to work nicely when tasting so loaded the shrimp and put in the fridge. Went a bit longer on the cook due to the size of the shrimp (1-2 minutes) and worked perfectly. Loaded onto egg noodles and topped with peas instead of green onions since I was too lazy to go to the store. My wife loved every bit!

This was really good! I made double the sauce and added half of it to the rice mixture (that included peas and carrots that I added). I used light soy sauce, so the rice needed some salt and pepper. The shrimp were big, but clearly not big enough. They were overcooked by the time the sauce thickened, and they caramelized. The flavor of the shrimp was incredible. I will buy bigger shrimp next time or adjust by reducing the sauce a bit first before adding the shrimp. Thanks for the wonderful recipe, Chef John! Just like you said in the recipe, it was not overly sweet like other recipes. Yum!!!

This turned out so well. I had to use powdered ginger because fresh was not sold at my market. I used 1/4 teaspoon but should have increased it to 1/2. I had leftovers and it is delicious cold.

Excellent recipe! Not too sweet, not too tangy. You MUST place the shrimp in the pan in one layer and turn them gently. We used Colossal shrimp but left the cooking time the same. Perfect. Sticky rice was a great pairing with just a bit of the pan sauce drizzled over it.

I followed the recipe exactly even though my Spidey sense was tingling. The recipe is good but the amount of sauce you end up with is .....not much. Next time I will double the sauce recipe so I have enough to cover the rice.

Chef John, Thank you for such a wonderful dish, a very easy recipe! I like this better than any other garlic shrimp I have ever tried. I am always looking forward to the next time I prepare it. I use half recipe for two people. A 3-4 minute cook time that is genuinely 3-4 minutes. As you always say; Enjoy!! Gary

I’ve made this recipe with shrimp and then with scallops. Both were excellent.

We did not like this. First, lacks flavors even with all the garlic, ginger and soy. Weird. The end result SCREAMED for acid, so I dripped on some lemon juice Then the directions called for a smokin hot pan and while I knew better, I tried... within the times given the shrimp over-cooked, way over-cooked. So, unless you plan to toss these into people's mouth the INSTANT they are done, cook slower. I added a touch of cayenne cuz I think the marinade lacked back-end, or back of the mouth umami.., didn't help. Don't waste expensive shrimp unless you like bland. Not hint of the garlic or ginger. Just weird. Chef Jill

I only added sesame seeds which I need to use up. Otherwise, very tasty!
