Ingredients

  • 4 skin-on, boneless chicken thighs
  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Thighs

Follow these simple steps to achieve perfectly cooked, crispy, and juicy chicken thighs every time.

Step 1: Prep the Chicken Thighs

Start by patting the chicken thighs dry with a paper towel. This will help the skin get nice and crispy during cooking. Once dry, brush both sides of the chicken with olive oil, ensuring they are well coated.

Step 2: Season the Thighs

In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle half of the spice mixture evenly over the chicken thighs. Turn the thighs over and coat the other side with the remaining seasoning.

Step 3: Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 400F (200C). This ensures that the chicken will cook evenly and become crispy on the outside while staying juicy on the inside.

Step 4: Cook the Chicken Thighs

Place the seasoned chicken thighs in a single layer in the air fryer basket, skin-side up. Cook for 18 minutes, checking the internal temperature with an instant-read thermometer. The chicken is done when it reaches 165F (74C), and the juices run clear.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Once the chicken thighs are fully cooked, remove them from the air fryer and serve immediately. Pair with your favorite side dishes for a complete meal.

How Long to Cook Chicken Thighs in the Air Fryer

Boneless chicken thighs typically take about 18 minutes to cook in a preheated air fryer at 400F (200C). Always check the internal temperature to ensure they are fully cooked.

Suggested Side Dishes

While the chicken is cooking, consider pairing it with these quick and easy sides:

  • Oven-Roasted Asparagus

But how did this popular recipe come to be, and what makes it unique? Lets dive into the history, regional variations, and fascinating facts behind this easy-to-make dish.

History and Origin

The concept of air frying is relatively new compared to traditional methods of cooking. The air fryer was first introduced in the early 2000s by Philips, a leading consumer electronics company. This innovative appliance uses rapid air circulation technology to cook food with little to no oil, mimicking the results of deep frying. Chicken thighs, a staple in many global cuisines, quickly became one of the most popular choices to prepare in the air fryer. Their rich flavor, combined with the air fryers ability to crisp up the skin, made them a perfect match for this method.

Regional Variations

While the air fryer version of chicken thighs is popular worldwide, the seasoning and preparation can vary significantly by region. In the United States, the dish is often seasoned with smoky paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper, which are staples in Southern and barbecue cuisine. In contrast, Mediterranean versions may include herbs like oregano, thyme, and rosemary, reflecting the flavors commonly found in Greek or Turkish cuisine. In Asia, spices such as ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and five-spice powder are often used, giving the dish an entirely different twist.

What Makes Air Fryer Chicken Thighs Different?

Air fryer chicken thighs stand out from similar dishes cooked by other methods like baking or frying due to their unique cooking technique. The air fryers rapid air circulation allows the chicken to cook evenly while keeping the skin incredibly crispy without the need for excessive oil. This results in a healthier alternative to deep-fried chicken thighs, while still offering the same satisfying texture and taste. The skin, often a favorite part of the chicken for many, becomes perfectly crisp while the inside remains moist and tender.

Where Is It Typically Served?

Air fryer chicken thighs are a versatile dish that can be served in various settings. They are a common feature in casual family dinners, quick weeknight meals, or even dinner parties. In many households, they are served alongside sides such as mashed potatoes, sauted vegetables, or a fresh salad. In restaurants, they may appear as part of a comfort food or barbecued menu, often accompanied by dipping sauces or seasoned with region-specific spices. Their quick cooking time and the crispiness that the air fryer provides make them ideal for busy families or meal prep enthusiasts.

Interesting Facts

  • The air fryer reduces cooking time significantly compared to traditional oven-baked methods, making it perfect for those who want quick and easy meals without compromising on taste.
  • Chicken thighs are considered one of the most flavorful cuts of chicken due to their higher fat content, which makes them especially juicy and tender when cooked in the air fryer.
  • Though originally designed for frying, air fryers can be used for a variety of cooking methods, including roasting, grilling, and baking, which makes them a truly versatile kitchen appliance.
  • Many chefs and home cooks prefer air frying for its ability to deliver healthier meals by using little to no oil, compared to traditional frying methods which can involve significant amounts of fat.

Yes, you can use skinless chicken thighs. However, the skin helps in achieving a crispy exterior. If you opt for skinless thighs, the cooking time may vary slightly, so it's important to check the internal temperature.

The best way to ensure the chicken is fully cooked is by using an instant-read thermometer. Insert it into the thickest part of the chicken, and it should read at least 165°F (74°C).

Yes, if you have a smaller air fryer, it's best to cook the chicken thighs in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cooking in batches ensures even cooking and crispiness.

Made this using bone-in thighs. Also brined them before starting the prep. Spice is very simple and very effective. Adjusted the cooking time to 14 minutes total, flipping after 8 min. Cooked to almost exactly 165 F. Stayed moist, with crisp skin. Will definitely do this again.

these were very good, I had bought skinless boneless thighs, otherwise followed the recipe, I did cut the cooking time down to ten minutes total and they were done. The chicken was fork tender and juicy, will make again and I saved the recipe.

I prepare a spice rub by mixing the listed spices directly into olive oil, rather than sprinkling them separately. I double the amount of olive oil and spices, adding garlic powder and onion powder in equal measure to the paprika. I combine everything with enough olive oil to create a runny paste. This paste is thoroughly applied to every nook and cranny of the chicken pieces. Taking extra care to pat the chicken thoroughly dry before applying the rub makes a difference. Then air fry the chicken at 400°F until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. I don’t flip the chicken during cooking so the skin turns out perfectly crisp.

Used bone-in thighs with skin and cooked for 20 min in my Ninja air fryer. Had 6 large pieces and cooked 3 at a time so as not to crowd. Delicious and perfectly cooked! The crispy skin was the best part. Hubby loved it. Would use less salt next time.

Really enjoyed this air fryer chicken recipe, as did my son and husband! I made it with bone-in thighs, substituted smoked paprika with 2/3 tsp paprika and 1/3 tsp cumin. Cooked for slightly less than 30 min, turned over at 15 minutes. Skin was crispy and delicious. Will most definitely add this into our meal rotation!!

Very simple and tasty. Two things - I would reduce the amount of salt and I would double the spices. Will be making this again.

This recipe was very good. It was easy to make. I cooked 2 skinless, boneless thighs for 16 minutes and realized I cooked it too long. I suggest you cook for 4 minutes at 400 degrees. Turn for 4 more minutes and check the internal temperature. I pulled other pieces at 166-168 and the chicken were perfectly cooked. Very tender and flavorful. I used a side of creamy chicken Knorr rice and the meal was amazing.

I added a dash of White pepper and a dash of turmeric. Reduced salt to 1/4 t. Turned it halfway thru. Temp was 166 degrees. Will add a minute of time.

I made these exactly as posted. The only difference was after I dried the chicken and applied the spices, I put them in the fridge to marinate for about 3 hours prior to cooking. The taste was through out the entire chicken. Excellent recipe Bibi!
