Tater Tot Hotdish Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cups chopped yellow onion
- 1 pound ground chuck beef (80% lean)
- teaspoon garlic powder
- teaspoon onion powder
- teaspoon black pepper
- 2 (10.5 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 2 cups frozen cut green beans, thawed
- 2 cups frozen sweet corn, thawed
- 1 pounds frozen tater tots
- teaspoon seasoned salt (such as Lawry's)
- cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 2 small scallions, thinly sliced
Directions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400F (200C).
Step 2: Heat a large, deep cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil and swirl to coat the skillet evenly.
Step 3: Add the chopped onions in a single layer, then top with the ground beef. Break up the beef into small pieces. Cook undisturbed for about 2 minutes, allowing the onions to soften and become translucent.
Step 4: Stir the beef and onions together. Continue cooking for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully cooked and browned.
Step 5: Reduce the heat to medium. Season the beef with garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir frequently and cook for 1 more minute to incorporate the seasoning.
Step 6: Remove the skillet from the heat. Add the condensed cream of mushroom soup, thawed green beans, and thawed sweet corn. Stir everything together until well combined.
Step 7: In a separate bowl, toss the tater tots with seasoned salt until evenly coated.
Step 8: Arrange the tater tots on top of the beef mixture in the skillet, placing them in a decorative pattern while avoiding large gaps between the tots.
Step 9: Place the skillet in the preheated oven. Bake for about 1 hour, or until the tater tots are golden and crispy.
Step 10: Remove the skillet from the oven. Sprinkle the baked dish with shredded Cheddar cheese and thinly sliced scallions. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

The Tater Tot Hotdish is a beloved casserole dish that has become synonymous with comfort food in many American households, especially in the northern regions. It is a hearty meal that combines ground meat, vegetables, and the crispy goodness of tater tots, all baked to perfection. But beyond its delicious taste, this dish has a fascinating history and a strong regional connection to Minnesota, where it was first popularized.
History of Tater Tot Hotdish
The origins of Tater Tot Hotdish can be traced back to the mid-20th century in the Upper Midwest, particularly Minnesota. Hotdish is a term used to describe casseroles in this region, and it became a staple for busy families in the 1950s and 1960s. The invention of Tater Tots in the 1950s, by the Ore-Ida company, provided a convenient and affordable ingredient for making these hearty casseroles. The Tater Tot Hotdish quickly gained popularity, becoming a regular feature at potlucks, church gatherings, and family dinners. The dish is often seen as a reflection of Midwestern culinary ingenuitysimple, filling, and satisfying.
Regional Characteristics
Though the dish is now enjoyed across the U.S., it is especially cherished in the Midwest, where it is a part of the local culinary tradition. In Minnesota, it is almost considered a state dish, with many variations seen across the state. Some versions include additional ingredients like mushrooms, cheese soup, or even different types of meat, such as chicken or turkey. Despite these variations, the core of the recipe remains the same: a mixture of meat, vegetables, and frozen tater tots. The dish is often served with a side of salad or bread, making it a complete meal that is both hearty and comforting.
How It Differs from Similar Dishes
The Tater Tot Hotdish stands out from other casseroles because of its unique combination of ingredients. While other casserole dishes may use pasta, rice, or potatoes, the use of tater tots as a topping is what gives this dish its distinctive texture and flavor. The crispy exterior of the tater tots contrasts with the creamy and savory filling underneath, creating a satisfying bite. Unlike traditional casseroles that may have a cheesy topping or baked bread crumbs, Tater Tot Hotdish relies solely on the golden crunch of the tots, which become beautifully crispy when baked.
Where Is It Typically Served?
The Tater Tot Hotdish is most commonly served in family homes, especially in colder climates where its hearty nature provides comfort during the winter months. It is a popular dish for gatherings such as potlucks, picnics, and church socials in Minnesota and neighboring states. Its convenience and ability to feed a large number of people make it a go-to choice for group meals. Many schools and local restaurants in the region also offer variations of the hotdish on their menus. It is less commonly found in high-end restaurants but remains a staple in local diners and family-friendly eateries.

Made this for our first cold night. It's nice to warm up the house with a delicious dish. Followed the recipe, except I used cheddar cheese soup as one of the other reviewers mentioned. I topped it off with green onions and fresh Italian parsley.

I scaled this down to use 2/3 lb. of beef and just using what I had on hand. I skipped the fresh onion just using the powder called for. I did use low sodium seasoned salt to season the beef while browning. I only had 1 can of cream of chicken soup, and scaled back the veggies accordingly. I used an 8x8 casserole dish to bake this and didn't quite have enough tater tots to cover the top from edge to edge, but it was fine. This dish was super easy to put together. I thought it tasted okay and I saved the leftovers for my meal tomorrow, but I noticed my husband picked at it and barely ate any, which is unusual for him.

I subbed one of the cream of mushroom for cream of celery (what I had on hand) and added an onion and mushroom soup mix packet for extra flavor. It was delicious!!!

I changed it from beef to chicken. I used 1 can of cream of mushroom and 2 cans of cream of chicken as a change from beef to chicken. I used one can of cream sweet corn instead of regular sweet corn. Left out scallions, onion, and regular corn, because of family tastes but still used the recommended onion powder. Very good. Alan
