Cook Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces egg noodles
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups 1% milk
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons white wine
  • 6 ounces shredded Swiss cheese
  • 2 cups cubed cooked chicken
  • 5 ounces diced ham
  • 1 cup garlic butter croutons
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
  2. In a large pot, bring lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add the egg noodles and stir until the water comes back to a boil. Cook the noodles uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 5 to 8 minutes, until tender yet firm. Drain the noodles.
  3. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes bubbly and light brown, about 5 minutes.
  4. Slowly add the milk, half-and-half, salt, and pepper to the saucepan. Stir frequently and bring to a simmer. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the white wine, shredded Swiss cheese, cubed chicken, and ham. Mix well to combine.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the cooked noodles and the chicken mixture. Stir until everything is well mixed. Transfer the mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
  7. In a food processor, combine the croutons and grated Parmesan cheese. Pulse until finely ground. Add the melted butter and pulse a few more times to mix everything together.
  8. Sprinkle the crouton mixture over the casserole.
  9. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until hot, bubbly, and lightly browned on top.

This rich and decadent casserole combines chicken, ham, Swiss cheese, and egg noodles in a creamy sauce. It is topped with a crunchy garlic crouton and Parmesan mixture that makes it irresistible. A modern twist on the classic chicken cordon bleu, this casserole offers a comforting and delicious dish perfect for any occasion.

Origin and History

The Chicken Cordon Bleu dish, which dates back to the 1940s, is believed to have originated in Switzerland. The name "Cordon Bleu" translates to "blue ribbon," a symbol of excellence in French culinary traditions. The original dish consists of chicken or veal stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese, then breaded and fried. Over the years, this elegant entre has been adapted into various forms, including this casserole version, which offers all the classic flavors in a more accessible, family-friendly format.

Regional Variations

While the classic Chicken Cordon Bleu hails from Switzerland and France, different regions have put their spin on it. In the United States, it has become a staple in home kitchens, especially in casserole form, making it easier to prepare for large gatherings. The casserole version often swaps out breadcrumbs for croutons or combines additional ingredients such as vegetables, making it a one-pot meal. The use of egg noodles adds an extra layer of texture and heartiness, which is a departure from the traditional breaded exterior.

What Sets It Apart?

Unlike the traditional Chicken Cordon Bleu, which is typically pan-fried, the casserole version is baked in the oven, making it a less labor-intensive dish. The creamy sauce and generous layers of cheese create a rich and indulgent texture. The addition of croutons on top provides a crunchy contrast to the soft interior. This version also combines chicken and ham with Swiss cheese in a way that results in a more accessible, casserole-style meal, perfect for busy families or dinner parties.

Where is It Typically Served?

This dish is commonly served as a main entre for dinner, particularly in American homes. It is a favorite for family gatherings, holidays, or potlucks, as it can easily be made in large quantities and is sure to satisfy a crowd. The casserole version is ideal for those looking for a filling, comforting meal that can be prepped ahead of time and baked when needed. It pairs well with simple side dishes such as steamed vegetables, a fresh salad, or roasted potatoes.

Fun Facts

  • The original Chicken Cordon Bleu was a French dish that used veal instead of chicken.
  • The name "Cordon Bleu" refers to the prestigious "Blue Ribbon" honor awarded to chefs in the French culinary tradition.
  • This casserole version is a modern twist, making the beloved dish easier to prepare and share with a large group.
  • Variations of the dish can include different types of cheese, such as Gruyre or Cheddar, and can even incorporate different proteins, like turkey or pork.

Conclusion

The Fabulous Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a delicious, modern interpretation of a classic dish. It combines the savory flavors of chicken, ham, and Swiss cheese with the creamy richness of a baked casserole, making it a family favorite. Whether youre looking for a new dinner idea or something to serve at your next gathering, this dish is sure to impress and satisfy every guest at the table.

This recipe was delicious! For the chicken, I used about a pound of chicken tenders that I cubed and cooked in olive oil with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. I ended up using 12 oz of egg noodles and 8 oz of cheese (4 oz swiss and 4 oz gruyere). The sauce mixture ended up being way too thick, so I probably added another cup of half and half to thin it out to the desired consistency. I baked for about 30 minutes covered with aluminum foil, and 5 minutes uncovered. I will definitely be making this again!

Really good. Made 1.5 recipe sauce. Added 1 t of Dijon mustard to the sauce. Seasoned the chicken with salt and garlic. Really good

This recipe is very good. I did add 1/2 cup of chopped onion and 1/2 chopped red bell pepper in the melted butter to soften, then added the flour to make the roux and completed the recipe as written.

I made this exactly as written and it's delicious! My grandkids love it too. Quite often I put it together in the morning, refrigerate it, so it's all set after a fun day to pop in the oven with an extended cooking time.

My husband and I really enjoyed this. Next time I will dilute the sauce more with milk. My roux was very thick and I followed the recipe.

Really liked it. But I think I'm going to make again with some alterations. My noodles clumped and the mixing as a whole did not go well. I'm going to try it with layering next time. Maybe make additional sauce to ensure it stays saucy.

I’ve made it many times and lately we have been loving it with diced up roasted red pepper added for color as well as flavor.

Loved the smell and taste of chicken cordon bleu in this casserole. With the ham, though, I thought it tasted a bit salty. I'm not a big salt user and I'd reduce the salt next time.

Absolutely delicious! I added just a little bit more milk to make it creamier, but, it would also be perfect as is. So happy to have found this delicious recipe by Lindsay.

I’ve made this one several times and, as always, it comes out delicious! I add a little garlic powder to the sauce, and the cheese I use is a Swiss/Gruyere blend, as that’s the option I have for shredded Swiss at my local grocery store. The cheese blend is so good, so I recommend it if you have it at your store as well!
