Slow Cooker Creamy Lemon Herb Chicken Recipe
This tender and juicy slow-cooked chicken, seasoned with garlic, Italian herbs, and a zesty lemon sauce, is the perfect meal for any occasion. The recipe yields six servings, making it great for family dinners or meal prepping for the week ahead.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
- 2 cloves garlic, smashed
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
- 3 (10 to 12 ounces) chicken breasts, halved horizontally to get 6 cutlets
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- Lemon wedges (optional)
Directions
- Gather all ingredients and have them ready for easy access.
- In a 4- to 5-quart slow cooker, combine chicken broth, garlic, heavy cream, Italian seasoning, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Stir well.
- Season the chicken breasts on both sides with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and black pepper.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, sear half of the chicken breasts until they are golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
- Remove the browned chicken from the skillet and transfer it to the slow cooker. Repeat the process with the remaining oil and chicken breasts.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 2 to 3 hours, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165F (74C), as measured by an instant-read thermometer.
- Once the chicken is cooked, use tongs to transfer the chicken and garlic cloves to a serving platter.
- In a medium microwave-safe bowl, whisk together lemon juice and cornstarch. Add the cooking liquid from the slow cooker to the bowl and microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in the lemon zest into the sauce and mix well.
- Serve the chicken with the lemon sauce and lemon wedges on the side, if desired. Enjoy your flavorful meal!

The Story Behind Slow Cooker Creamy Lemon Herb Chicken
The Slow Cooker Creamy Lemon Herb Chicken is a modern adaptation of traditional lemon chicken dishes, which have been cherished across various European cuisines for centuries. The use of lemon to enhance poultry flavors dates back to Mediterranean kitchens, particularly in Italy and Greece, where citrus was widely available and prized for its ability to balance rich and savory ingredients. This recipe combines the convenience of slow-cooking with the tangy brightness of lemon, offering a dish that is both comforting and sophisticated.
Regional Variations and Local Influences
While this particular version is popular in American households, regional variations exist that reflect local ingredients and tastes. In Mediterranean regions, for example, lemon chicken often includes olives, capers, and fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. In Southern United States kitchens, slow-cooked chicken might incorporate cream and butter, emphasizing richness and smooth texture, which aligns closely with the creamy sauce featured in this recipe. The slow cooker method itself has become a staple in North American cuisine, emphasizing ease and consistent results for busy home cooks.
What Sets This Dish Apart from Similar Recipes

The creamy component distinguishes it from more acidic or broth-based lemon chicken dishes, giving the sauce a luxurious texture that pairs beautifully with pasta or rice. The addition of cornstarch to thicken the sauce ensures a velvety consistency that elevates the overall dining experience.
Common Serving Practices

I used an instapot so I could sear in the same pot. I would suggest mixing the cornstarch lemon juice in the sauce/gravy and use the sauce/gravy to thicken it rather than thickening it in a microwave. That didn't work well for me. It got cold before I could add it to the instapot and it hardened. The recipe was well worth the trouble, however. It was delicious! We had it over cornbread stuffing. Yum! I will be making this again.

This was delicious. I doubled the sauce ingredients and added fresh basil, which really upped the flavor. Pan fried 4 thick chicken cutlets in a little olive oil, well seasoned with freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt, cooked four hours on high in my crockpot. Added 1/3 cup white wine to the sauce ingredients. Served with buttered, salt and peppered linguine and peas and carrots. Great meal! Easy cook, and will make again.

Super easy and tasty dish! I did double the sauce (used half & half since that’s what I had), adding some pasta water to it for my desired consistency. Used chicken tenderloins, and simmered on the stove for 30 minutes as opposed to the crockpot as I didn’t have the time. Mixed in mini bow tie pasta and (cut up) tenderloins to combine as a skillet dish. Compliments all around!

Really easy to put together on a week night. I don't know if I'd say it's anything special, but it hits the spot. I might try dicing the garlic and leaving it in next time.

It was quite good. I did adjust the amount of the sauce. A good option for when you are entertaining, and it is easily scaled.

There was so much liquid, it didn't thicken up at all. The flavor was blah, no garlic, no lemon. I followed the directions exactly. We squeezed lemon wedges and finally took the bottle of lemon juice and poured it on the chicken on our plate for some flavor. Not making this again.
