- Arrange the halved pepperoni and grape tomatoes on top of the cheese. Sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes, if desired, and season with salt to taste.

The Story Behind Pizza Boats
Pizza boats, a fun and inventive twist on traditional pizza, likely emerged in home kitchens in the United States during the late 20th century as a solution for busy families seeking a customizable, handheld meal. Using hoagie rolls as a base, cooks could enjoy the flavors of pizza without the need to make or order an entire pie. This adaptation allowed for smaller portions, faster cooking times, and easy ingredient substitutions, making it a practical option for lunch, dinner, or snacks.
Regional Characteristics
While rooted in Italian cuisine, pizza boats have developed regional variations, particularly in the U.S. In the Midwest, they are often loaded with multiple types of cheese and hearty meats like sausage and pepperoni. On the East Coast, fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and spinach are more commonly added. In some Southern regions, spicy ingredients like jalapeos or hot sauce are included to create a zesty version of this simple dish. Each area reflects local tastes and the availability of ingredients, resulting in a surprisingly diverse range of pizza boats nationwide.
Differences from Similar Dishes
Pizza boats differ from traditional pizza and calzones in several ways. Unlike a classic pizza, they use a pre-baked bread roll as a vessel, creating a thicker, chewier base. Unlike calzones, pizza boats are open-faced, allowing toppings to be visible and cheese to bubble freely. This method also reduces cooking time and prevents soggy dough, offering a crispier, more portable alternative. The simplicity and versatility set pizza boats apart, giving home cooks the freedom to mix flavors without the complexity of dough preparation.
Where Pizza Boats Are Commonly Served
Pizza boats are popular in casual settings such as family dinners, school lunches, and parties. They are also a common feature at potlucks, bake sales, and game-day gatherings, where convenience and finger-friendly servings are highly valued. Some pizzerias and cafes have even incorporated them into their menus, marketing them as an easy-to-eat alternative to whole pizzas. Their portability and adaptability make them ideal for both home cooking and casual dining establishments.

I decided to use hamburger buns since I always have them left over. Worked out perfectly even tho I used a little less of everything and cooked for a shorter time. Made a great lunch for my husband and me!
