Overnight French Toast Recipe
French Toast Casserole
This French Toast Casserole is a perfect make-ahead breakfast or brunch dish. It combines all the classic flavors of French toast in a delicious, easy-to-prepare baked form. The soft bread soaks up the custard mixture, creating a sweet, rich flavor with a hint of spice.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups half-and-half
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- teaspoon ground cinnamon
- teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 dash salt
- Cooking spray
Directions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350F (175C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Step 2: Arrange the bread slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly as needed.
Step 3: In a medium bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Use a rotary beater or whisk to mix the ingredients until fully blended.
Step 4: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring each slice is well-moistened.
Step 5: Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
Step 6: After the bread has soaked, place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the casserole comes out clean.

Here is the revised review: Unfortunately, I couldn't fit all the slices of French bread loaf into my 13x9 pan, so I ended up using only 6 eggs. I baked it covered in foil for 45 minutes in the morning, then uncovered it and baked for an additional 15 minutes. The bottom ended up getting a bit too dark as the top took longer to cook. While the flavor was good, I might explore other recipes next time.

Satisfactory, but very similar to a traditional bread pudding recipe.
