Guacamole is a staple in Mexican cuisine and a favorite accompaniment for a wide range of dishes, from tacos to tortilla chips. The simplicity of the ingredients belies its rich flavor, making it a beloved dip across the globe. This "Simply Guacamole" recipe is a great example of how just a few ingredients can come together to create something incredibly flavorful.
History and Origins of Guacamole
Guacamole has its roots in the Aztec civilization, dating back to the 16th century. The word "guacamole" comes from the Nahuatl word ahuacamolli, which is a combination of ahuacatl (avocado) and molli (sauce). The ancient Aztecs were known to mash avocados and combine them with spices and herbs such as chili and tomato. The dish was originally enjoyed as a nutrient-rich snack or spread.
Over time, the recipe evolved, particularly in the southwestern United States and Mexico, where it is now a ubiquitous side dish. The modern version of guacamole, like the one presented here, typically includes fresh cilantro, green onion, lime or lemon juice, and salt for seasoning.
Regional Variations of Guacamole
Though the core ingredients remain fairly consistent, guacamole recipes can vary greatly depending on the region. For example, in Mexico, guacamole might be enhanced with finely diced tomatoes, jalapeos, or garlic. In certain parts of Central America, you may find guacamole mixed with lime juice and finely chopped herbs like oregano, giving it a unique herbal flavor. In some regions, roasted chilies such as chipotle might be added for a smoky kick.
Moreover, in the United States, variations of guacamole have emerged, such as adding sour cream or even fruits like pineapple and mango for a tropical twist. The beauty of guacamole lies in its versatility, adapting easily to regional tastes and preferences.
How Simply Guacamole Differs from Other Guacamole Recipes
The "Simply Guacamole" recipe stands out for its minimalistic approach. Unlike many guacamole recipes that incorporate a wide array of additional ingredients, such as tomatoes, garlic, or spicy chilies, this version keeps things clean and straightforward. It uses just five key ingredients: ripe avocados, fresh cilantro, green onions, lemon juice, and a bit of salt and pepper.
This simplicity allows the creamy texture of the avocado to shine through, and the freshness of the cilantro and green onion adds a refreshing balance. This is the ideal recipe for those who prefer a classic, unadulterated guacamole without the distraction of additional ingredients.
Where Guacamole is Typically Served
Guacamole is a versatile dish, commonly served as an appetizer or dip, but it can also be used as a topping for various main dishes. It is a popular accompaniment to Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. The dip is also commonly enjoyed with tortilla chips, which provide the perfect crispy contrast to the creamy texture of the guacamole.
In many Mexican homes and restaurants, guacamole is made fresh at the table, often prepared in a traditional stone molcajete (mortar and pestle) to achieve the ideal texture. It is a staple at gatherings, particularly during festive occasions like Cinco de Mayo and Super Bowl parties in the United States.
Fun Facts About Guacamole
- Avocados, the main ingredient in guacamole, are technically berries! Their creamy texture and rich flavor make them a perfect base for the dip.
- In Mexico, guacamole is sometimes served with a side of tostadas (crunchy fried tortillas) and is often paired with cold beer or margaritas.
- In some regions, guacamole is thought to be an aphrodisiac due to the avocado's high levels of healthy fats and vitamins, which are believed to boost energy and vitality.
- The popularity of guacamole in the United States has surged over the years. On average, Americans consume over 2 billion pounds of avocados annually, much of which is used for making guacamole.
In conclusion, whether served as a snack, appetizer, or topping, guacamole is a delicious and versatile dish with a rich history. The "Simply Guacamole" recipe exemplifies the beauty of simplicity in cooking, focusing on fresh, high-quality ingredients to create a dip that is both flavorful and satisfying.

Great guacamole! It's simple and delicious! I cut this back to 8 servings for 2 avocados. I used fresh lime juice vs. lemon juice and added just a bit of garlic and 1/4 tsp. of cumin. Perfect with warm tortilla chips!

Quick and easy, quite tasty recipe that has become the "go to" for my huge homegrown Florida green skin avocados. It does not have to be hass to be good! Fresh cilantro and green onions from my patio garden and fresh squeezed lemon along with a touch of sea salt and pepper, and this dip is ready to rock the house. Very nice recipe, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for a wonderfully simple and tasty dip recipe! I used lime juice and didn't use any cilantro at all. I also added a clove of garlic and some paprika. We didn't have any leftovers!

I use lime juice instead of lemon. I dislike cilantro so I leave it out. I add jalapeños instead, as I like a little kick.

I'm the one who contributed this recipe. After reading all the reviews I should add what one of the reviewers said about the quality of the avocados. The should be HAAS. When you buy them at the store the skin shouldn't be too bumpy and soft to touch. Not too soft. Use them as soon as possible as avocados don't have a long shelf life at least the ones that are not hard as a rock. Adding lime instead of lemon for flavor. It's probably a good call. But otherwise is that SIMPLE! Keep it that way for best results and if you don't like CILANTRO this is definitely not your recipe. What makes this recipe is the cilantro and green onions do not replace or exchange. This recipe is supposed to be simple and without garlic. Those who add cumin, garlic or tomatoes need a different recipe. So don't go by the reviews too much is my experience. Funny you learn that when you submit your own recipe.

I used juice from a fresh lime instead of lemon and only 1/4 cup of minced onion. This was a dish for our homeschool co-op family event. Yes! It was gone quick and I was asked many times "what's the secret?" Thanks, I like my guacamole without tomato so this was perfect!

Even better with a little bit of cumin, chili powder and fresh diced red onion , jalapeno and a Roma tomato. I do like the lemon flavor better than lime, but that's just my preference.

I made this as written. I think it unfair to make a review on a recipe when you change it the very first time. I don't care for tomatoes so when I found this I was elated. It is delicious. And it will be my go to from now on. And super easy. The only problem I have is letting it chill first to let all of the ingredients meld, lol. Next time I might add a.bit of garlic but that would be it.
