This coleslaw recipe is quick to make and delivers a creamy, tangy side dish that pairs perfectly with grilled meats or sandwiches. Enjoy the fresh crunch of cabbage with a sweet and savory dressing. Follow the simple steps to prepare this classic dish!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • cup white sugar
  • cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pounds shredded cabbage

Directions

Step 1: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, white sugar, distilled white vinegar, and salt. Stir well until both the sugar and salt are fully dissolved.

Step 2: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dressing for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 3: After the dressing has chilled, pour it over the shredded cabbage in a large bowl. Toss everything together gently to ensure the cabbage is evenly coated with the dressing.

Step 4: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the coleslaw for at least 2 hours, or until thoroughly chilled. This step allows the flavors to develop even more.

Step 5: Once chilled, serve the coleslaw as a refreshing side dish with your favorite meal. Enjoy!

My family absolutely adores cole slaw. We enjoy all kinds - creamy, vinegar-based, sweet - and this recipe is a new favorite! While searching for a new cole slaw recipe for the 'February 2013 Faceless Frenzy', I stumbled upon this gem that I had saved in my recipe collection. I had already tried a personalized version before it was even published. I prepared the dressing in the morning to allow the flavors to meld throughout the day. About an hour before serving, I drizzled the dressing over the cabbage and broccoli slaw blend, and the result was absolutely delicious. The dressing was so tasty that my family even suggested using it as a salad dressing. I appreciated that the leftovers stayed fresh and crisp, making them perfect for packed lunches the following day. Elle, I am thrilled to be the first to review and photograph your fantastic recipe. It will definitely become a staple in our household, being made again and again. :-)

This is my inaugural review, spurred by my sheer delight in successfully creating something new! Venturing into coleslaw-making for the first time, I opted to incorporate ingredients from my very own garden (another first for me this year!). Following the recipe for the "sauce" with slight personal tweaks to the cream and vinegar ratios, I achieved a perfected blend that satisfied my palate. I particularly appreciate the absence of excessive mayonnaise in the mix. Utilizing cabbage, broccoli, onions, and banana peppers harvested from my garden, along with store-bought carrots and purple cabbage for vibrancy, the final dish was both visually stunning and absolutely delicious!

Fantastic, but lacked a bit of flavor for my taste. I decided to enhance it by adding a teaspoon of onion powder and another of garlic powder. The result was much more satisfying for me. Garlic truly elevates any dish!

I appreciate that this cole slaw recipe doesn't require mayonnaise, which is a rare find (since I dislike raw eggs). I decided to include shredded carrots and red onion for added color. I plan to decrease the amount of sugar to 1/2 cup in my next attempt, as I found it a bit too sweet for my taste.

I was raised in Kansas, where my grandmother would always prepare this coleslaw dressing. I'm now 71 years old and unsure of when this recipe was originally created at the Brookville Hotel. I've made a slight modification by including celery salt and pepper. It has been a beloved family favorite for over 71 years!

Outstanding Cole slaw! A fantastic addition to our holiday menu, and it was so quick and easy to prepare. The shredded cabbage came in convenient 16oz bags, so we simply used 32oz of cabbage and doubled all the other ingredients.
