Tuscan Sausage Ragu Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound bulk sweet Italian sausage
- 1 pound bulk hot Italian sausage
- 1 large red onion, diced
- 2 ribs celery, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- cup dry red wine
- 1 (28 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 (28 ounce) can tomato sauce
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup heavy cream
Directions
Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add both the sweet and hot Italian sausage, cooking and stirring until browned, about 10 minutes. Use a spoon to break the sausage into small crumbles as it cooks.
Step 2: Stir in the diced onion, celery, and minced garlic. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes translucent, about 8 minutes.
Step 3: Transfer the sausage mixture into a slow cooker.
Step 4: Pour the red wine into the same skillet, stirring to dissolve the flavorful browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Pour the wine into the slow cooker as well.
Step 5: Add the undrained diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and a pinch of salt to taste. Mix everything together well in the slow cooker.
Step 6: Cover the slow cooker, set the heat to low, and cook for 5 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and the sausage to become tender.
Step 7: After 5 hours, stir in the heavy cream. Cover the slow cooker again and cook for an additional hour, allowing the cream to fully incorporate into the stew.
Step 8: Before serving, taste the stew and adjust the salt if needed. Once satisfied, serve hot and enjoy!
