Southern Tomato Sandwich Recipe
This classic tomato sandwich is a Southern staple. While simple, its far from boring. The perfect combination of juicy tomatoes, creamy mayonnaise, and fresh bread makes it an irresistible treat. Here's how to prepare this timeless favorite.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (or more to taste)
- 2 slices white bread
- 4 thin slices ripe tomato
- teaspoon kosher salt
- teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Gather all ingredients. Fresh, ripe tomatoes are key to making this sandwich shine.
Step 2: Spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise evenly on both slices of bread. A butter knife works best for this step.
Step 3: Place two slices of tomato on one slice of bread. Season them with half of the salt and pepper.
Step 4: Add two more slices of tomato on top of the first layer. Season again with the remaining salt and pepper for even flavor.
Step 5: Place the second slice of bread, mayonnaise side down, on top of the tomato layers. Press gently to bring the sandwich together.
Step 6: Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy! Pair it with potato chips and an ice-cold drink like sweet tea or Coca-Cola for the full Southern experience.
Best Tomatoes for a Tomato Sandwich
The best tomatoes for this sandwich come from a local farmstand, preferably in-season, fresh, and meaty. Nicole McLaughlin recommends using Beefsteak tomatoes, but feel free to experiment with heirloom varieties like Cherokee Purple for added depth of flavor.
What to Serve With a Southern Tomato Sandwich

I have always made my Tomato Sandwiches this way. I'm laughing because there is actually a recipe for it, LOL

I toast the bread, then I put a slice of American cheese over the tomatoes, then stick it under the broiler to melt the cheese

Great. My Grandparents taught me this "recipe". I add a slice of bologna. Yeah! Good. I also peel the tomato. Use Heirloom tomatoes.. (I'm 86)

West Coast native here, and whenever I get a craving for a tomato sammie, I like to think outside the box. 1: Deli style sliced sourdough bread (bigger slices). 2: Heirloom tomatos (I go for those orange or purple ones!), or the biggest and reddest ones I can find. 3: Honey mustard, or BBQ or sriracha sauce for an extra kick! 4: Cheese, and I can't think of any kind that compliments thick slices of tomato none better than sharp cheddar. Sometimes I'll toast up this sandwich in the frypan like a grilled cheese and eat it along with a bowl of soup, other times I won't. If you do choose to pan fry, I have found that using Beefsteak or any other firmer-fleshed tomato holds up better during the frying- less likely to wilt. Air toasters or oven toasters (I'm guessing?) probably won't cause this soggy, wilting effect. Or you could cheat first off and just toast the bread beforehand. Either way it's versatile. :)

Been making these for over 65 years! White bread (now prefer sourdough) , lots of mayonnaise, thick slices of ripe tomatoes and salt & pepper. Mouth watering just thinking about next one🥰🥰🥰

I call it a kitchen sink tomato sandwich, as I use thicker slices of tomato with a bit more mayo, and eat over the kitchen sink, letting the juice drip off my elbows/ Delicious!

I have made these for years. I didn't realize they were southern. I live in Canada and they people here have made them for years. The only thing better is a toasted version ( BLT) of this with bacon and lettuce added.

What I grew up with. Only difference is I slice my tomatoes just a tad thinner and add more to the sandwich. I get so excited when tomatoes come right off the vine. I eat this for most meals during this time. I would skip a steak for one of these.

Room temp tomatoes: check White bread: check Duke's mayonnaise: check Unpeeled tomatoes: (buzzer sound) You were doing so well until that last one! Also, "thin" slices? Nah, make 'em a full half inch thick, cutting them to fit without overlapping. Better yet, save that one huge tomato for sandwiches, and make three or four of them with one thick slice each.

Try toasting the bread. Sourdough bread works great too.

Good sweet tomatoes make this a fantastic sandwich. I like to do a similar thing but instead of mayo I use cream cheese. Often on one piece of toast. Love tomatoes and sandwiches!!

Everyone raised in the South, this sandwich is in your DNA! It doesn’t get any simpler or better than this! Dukes, fresh picked tomatoes, a little salt & pepper & white bread is all you need for the best sandwich!

I've been eating these for 65 years. Grew up in the Sacramento area of Calif. where tomatoes are grown and canned. Try adding some thin sliced red onion.

I had to laugh at the “how to” when it said you probably wouldn’t need more than a tbsp. of mayo! lol! To me, that’s the secret to a good tomato sandwich. Oh, and always, always use regular white bread. It’s the best! Duke's mayo is ok, but I like Bama.
