Classic Cuban Midnight (Medianoche) Sandwich Recipe

Classic Cuban Midnight (Medianoche) Sandwich Recipe

Cook Time: 8 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 sweet bread rolls
  • cup mayonnaise
  • cup prepared mustard
  • 1 pound thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 1 pound thinly sliced fully cooked pork
  • 1 pound sliced Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup dill pickle slices
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Split the sandwich rolls in half. Spread a generous amount of mayonnaise and mustard on the cut sides of each roll.
  2. Layer the sandwich with an equal portion of Swiss cheese, ham, and pork, in that exact order, on the bottom half of each roll.
  3. Add a few dill pickle slices on top of the meat and cheese layers, then place the top half of the roll over the sandwich.
  4. Brush the tops of the assembled sandwiches with the melted butter.
  5. Press the sandwiches in a sandwich press heated to medium-high heat for about 5 to 8 minutes, keeping the sandwiches pressed down. If you don't have a sandwich press, use a large skillet over medium-high heat and press the sandwiches down with a heavy plate or another skillet. Some indoor grills work well for this too.
  6. If using a skillet, flip the sandwiches once to ensure they are evenly browned on both sides.
  7. Once cooked, slice the sandwiches diagonally and serve hot.
