Classic Cuban Midnight (Medianoche) Sandwich Recipe
Cook Time: 8 minutes
Ingredients:
- 4 sweet bread rolls
- cup mayonnaise
- cup prepared mustard
- 1 pound thinly sliced cooked ham
- 1 pound thinly sliced fully cooked pork
- 1 pound sliced Swiss cheese
- 1 cup dill pickle slices
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Directions:
- Split the sandwich rolls in half. Spread a generous amount of mayonnaise and mustard on the cut sides of each roll.
- Layer the sandwich with an equal portion of Swiss cheese, ham, and pork, in that exact order, on the bottom half of each roll.
- Add a few dill pickle slices on top of the meat and cheese layers, then place the top half of the roll over the sandwich.
- Brush the tops of the assembled sandwiches with the melted butter.
- Press the sandwiches in a sandwich press heated to medium-high heat for about 5 to 8 minutes, keeping the sandwiches pressed down. If you don't have a sandwich press, use a large skillet over medium-high heat and press the sandwiches down with a heavy plate or another skillet. Some indoor grills work well for this too.
- If using a skillet, flip the sandwiches once to ensure they are evenly browned on both sides.
- Once cooked, slice the sandwiches diagonally and serve hot.
