Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 strips bacon
- 1 (1 pound) fillet salmon, cut into 2 portions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
- 4 slices country-style bread, toasted
- 4 slices tomato
- 2 green leaf lettuce leaves
Directions
- Cook bacon in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate. Evenly coat the salmon fillets with olive oil.
- Place the salmon on the preheated grill, skin-side down. Cook for about 5 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side until the skin easily lifts off the flesh, about 5 minutes more. Flip again and continue cooking until the salmon flakes easily with a fork, about 2 to 3 minutes more.
- In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, dill, and lemon zest. Divide the mixture and spread it onto two slices of the toasted bread.
- Top each slice with one portion of salmon, 2 tomato slices, 2 strips of bacon, 1 lettuce leaf, and the remaining toasted bread slice.

Origin of the Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce
The Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce is a delightful fusion of fresh ingredients that highlights the versatility of salmon. Salmon, a fish rich in flavor and nutrients, has been a staple of various cuisines, especially in regions where fishing is prominent. The addition of dill and mayonnaise-based sauces, however, is rooted in European cuisine, particularly Scandinavian dishes where dill is a beloved herb. The combination of dill and fish is classic in Swedish and Norwegian cooking, making this sandwich a tribute to Scandinavian culinary traditions. While the sandwich itself may not have a singular origin, it draws influence from these coastal European cultures, offering a fresh take on traditional fish dishes.
Regional Variations
This sandwich can be found in various forms across different regions, each with its own twist. In coastal American cities, especially in the Pacific Northwest where salmon is abundant, the sandwich is often paired with local herbs or served with fresh artisan bread. In Scandinavia, a similar preparation might include smoked salmon and be served open-faced on rye bread with pickled cucumbers and a dollop of mustard. In some Mediterranean countries, variations of dill sauce might be substituted with tzatziki or a yogurt-based sauce, adding a creamy tang that complements the richness of the grilled fish. These regional variations showcase the adaptability of the grilled salmon sandwich, making it a beloved dish in various cultural settings.
How It Differs from Similar Dishes
While there are many types of seafood sandwiches, the Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce stands out for its unique flavor combination. Unlike traditional fish sandwiches that might use battered or fried fish fillets, this recipe highlights the natural flavor of grilled salmon, which is known for its moist texture and rich, slightly sweet taste. The dill sauce, with its fresh, herbal notes, complements the salmon in a way that differs from the more common tartar or cocktail sauces found in similar dishes. Additionally, the use of crispy bacon adds a savory crunch, which is not a standard feature in most fish sandwiches. This contrast in textures makes the Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce both a satisfying and refreshing choice compared to its counterparts.
Where It Is Typically Served
The Grilled Salmon Sandwich with Dill Sauce is often served at casual dining establishments, especially those located near coastal areas or markets specializing in fresh seafood. It is a popular choice for lunch or dinner in American diners, seafood restaurants, and bistros. In Scandinavian countries, similar preparations can be found in local cafs, particularly in regions where fresh fish is a common ingredient. It's also a popular dish at beachside eateries and during summer picnics, where the grilled salmon's smoky flavor pairs wonderfully with the fresh air and relaxed atmosphere. In addition, it's frequently served as a healthy alternative to heavier meat-based sandwiches, making it a favorite for those looking for a lighter yet filling option.

Delicious! I found the mayo sauce a bit bland as is, so I tweaked it to my taste, which is one of the great things about recipes! I kept the same amount of mayo but added 1 tsp of dill, 1/2 tsp of lemon pepper, a bit more cracked black pepper, and salt. The result was perfect!!!!! I believe the lemon pepper was the secret ingredient. Just a few shakes made a big difference. I used turkey bacon for a healthier option, along with whole wheat buns. I added the sauce to both the fish and the buns. Thank you!! =)

Recipe was decent but has the potential to be a five-star dish with some minor tweaks: - Remember to season the fish! I opted for a cayenne rub to give it some extra heat. - Instead of toasting the bread, try buttering it and then using the skillet used for the bacon to brown the bread (just drain the excess fat). - When making the dill sauce, be generous with the zest and dill. - Lastly, three words: pickled red onions - a game changer!

Amazing sandwich! Following others' advice, I substituted 1/2 tsp of lemon pepper for lemon zest. I also increased the amount of pepper in the mayo mix and seasoned the salmon with salt and pepper. I spread a bit of mayo on the fish before grilling it, and it turned out perfectly grilled. So tasty!

I prepared a fantastic sandwich using a toasted ciabatta roll, which elevated it to perfection. I seasoned the fish with blackening seasoning and topped it with lettuce, garden-fresh tomato, and red onion. The mayo sauce was good, but could use some tweaking. All in all, it was a truly delicious sandwich.

Better than expected! I cooked the salmon in the oven at 375°F for 10 minutes and added black pepper to the mayo based on other reviews. It made for the ideal summer sandwich.

This recipe was fantastic! I made a slight modification by applying the sauce to the salmon before grilling it, and also using it as recommended on the sandwich. Delicious!

Excellent review from the family! I used a cast iron frying pan, buns from the freezer, leftover greens, and lime instead of lemon. It was a fantastic last-minute choice for a weeknight dinner. Despite the absence of bacon, it wasn't even missed.

It might come down to personal preference, but I wasn't a fan of the subtle sweetness in the mayonnaise and the hint of lemon in this sandwich. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me either.
