Slow Cooker Bone Broth Recipe

Cook Time: 505 minutes

Beef Bone Broth

Yields: 16 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef bones (or more to taste)
  • 3 carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 8 cups cold water (or as needed to cover bones)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • Kosher salt, to taste

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the beef bones on the sheet.

Step 2: Roast the bones in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until they are nicely browned.

Step 3: While the bones are roasting, place the chopped carrots, celery, onion, garlic, peppercorns, and bay leaves into a slow cooker.

Step 4: Once the bones are roasted, transfer them to the slow cooker, placing them on top of the vegetables.

Step 5: Add enough cold water to the slow cooker to fully cover the bones. Then, pour in the apple cider vinegar and season with kosher salt to taste.

Step 6: Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on Low for 8 hours.

Step 7: After 8 hours, pour the broth through a fine-mesh strainer into a bowl, discarding the solids. The broth is now ready to enjoy!

Cooks Note

You can skim off any froth that forms at the surface of the broth as it cooks, but it's not necessary unless you prefer a clearer broth. The froth contains healthy nutrients, so you can leave it in if you like.

If you'd prefer a less fatty broth, you can remove the congealed fat from the top once the stock cools. If you're using bones from grass-fed animals, the fat is considered healthy, but the choice is yours.
