Easy Beer Batter Recipe

Easy Beer Batter Recipe

Beer Batter

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle of beer

Directions:

Step 1: Begin by gathering all your ingredients. This will make the process smooth and easy.

Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk the self-rising flour and beer together until just combined. Don't worry if the batter is lumpy thats completely normal!

Cooks Note:

If you're using this batter for frying fish or vegetables, heat oil in a deep fryer or a large saucepan to 350F (175C). Working in small batches, dip your fish or vegetables into the beer batter, making sure they are evenly coated. Then carefully drop them into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, ensuring they are cooked all the way through. Once done, drain them on paper towels and season with salt to taste.

Nice straight forward recipe. If you don't have self rising flour, no worries. Use all purpose flour and add 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt for each cup of flour. I did beer batter fish with a light Mexican beer. Very nice.

I've tried a few different beer batter recipes and they're good, but they're not perfect. I came across this one and my first thought was, "no egg?! how?!" I was so wrong. It doesn't need anything else. I seasoned the fish before I dropped them into the batter with small amounts each of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. The batter is very thick and lumpy, which concerned me at first, but I followed the directions letter for letter and it was excellent. My fish was so light and crispy I wanted to cry. We had some leftover fish so the next day I placed the cold, cooked fish on a baking rack and popped them in the oven at 350 for about 10 minutes or so. They crisped up well. I'm so happy to have found the perfect beer batter!!

This was so easy and no mess, trick is to hold the fillet half in the oil for a few seconds so it doesn’t stick to the bottom. For 2 serves I used 1/2 cup plain flour and rounded Tsp baking powder whisked them added beer until not thick/not runny. Bought 1kg frozen bag red emperor from supermarket. Picked the 3 thinnest of the little packs. Cooked at 170c but turned down a bit as would have been too brown. Drained on paper towel. Couldn’t believe the thick golden pieces that came out. Had used seasoned flour to coat then added salt flakes once plated. Heated the 3rd piece up in the air fryer the next day and it was so crispy and perfect still. Hubby said better than our go to F&C at the beach. May try subbing a little soda water and cornflour next time to lighten it a tad. Also did hand cut potato and sweet potato thick chips. Thrice cooked. Steam toss in corn flou & plain flour, freeze, fry rest fry.

Tastes great! The comment about using 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder w/ 1/2 teaspoon salt per cup of flour in regular flour worked perfectly. I used a pale ale and it was fantastic.

Made with gluten free self raising flour and gluten free Hahns ultra Chrisp beer. Was the best batter just as good a using wheat flour. My wife who is coeliac and hadn’t had beer batter before was over the moon with it.

Love this recipe. Quick and thick. Added onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Great fish fry!

Make sure before you batter the fish, you dip it in a mixture of salt and flour so the batter sticks to the fish and won’t slip off.

Delish! I was looking for a beer batter that didn't have eggs (due to allergy) and this was spot on! Thank you poster that said to use 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt.

Perfect batter, light and crispy and not soggy at all. I added 2tsp of baking powder and a sprinkle of paprika and about a tsp of salt. Perfect and crispy

I read the other reviews carefully. I didn't have self rising flour so I added the baking soda and salt. I also added garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne. Was skeptical but oh my! Such a light batter, crispy and flavorful. It's a keeper.

So quick and simple. I used gluten-free beer and plain gluten-free flour (mostly rice flour in the grocery store mix) plus baking powder and baking soda. So light, crispy and delicious with snapper fish and cauliflower.

So easy to make and tastes great. I made deep fried cod with this recipe. I rolled the fish in flour and then put it in the batter. I'll definitely be making this again!

The recipe itself was easy enough, especially after reading some of the reviews. I only had plain flour, so did what others suggested and added baking powder to the flour and some salt! BUT, after adding in rhe whole Lagger bottle of beer, I had closer to beer batter dough for bread! Didn't have any more beer, so, I just added water until I had a good consistency. It did turn out really well though! Lol

Taste will depend on the beer. I recommend a lager like Samuel Adams. Big mistake if you choose an inexpensive mass produced beer.

Works as directed. Simple, good taste , added old bay which enhanced taste. Why buy packaged ? Any beer works well,

This was incredibly easy, with amazing results. It is (at least mine was) super messy and I had some moments of panic due to that. All the breading stayed together though, with fantastic flavor. Will definitely make this again. I used Labatt Blue and seasoned with Old Bay.
