Fried Chicken with Creamy Gravy Recipe
Ingredients
- cup milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- teaspoon poultry seasoning
- 1 (4-pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 3 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup milk
Directions
Step 1: In a medium bowl, beat together cup of milk and the beaten egg until smooth.
Step 2: In a resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, garlic salt, paprika, black pepper, and poultry seasoning.
Step 3: Place the chicken pieces in the bag, seal it, and shake vigorously to coat each piece evenly.
Step 4: Dip each piece of coated chicken into the milk and egg mixture, ensuring its fully coated.
Step 5: After dipping in the egg mixture, return the chicken to the flour mixture for a second coat. Set aside any remaining flour mixture for later use.
Step 6: In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 365F (185C).
Step 7: Carefully place the coated chicken into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 8: Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking the chicken for about 30 minutes, or until tender and fully cooked through.
Step 9: Once cooked, remove the chicken from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
Step 10: Discard all but 2 tablespoons of the frying oil from the skillet.
Step 11: Over low heat, stir in the reserved 2 tablespoons of flour mixture, cooking for about 2 minutes while constantly stirring.
Step 12: Slowly whisk in the chicken broth, scraping any browned bits off the bottom of the skillet to incorporate into the gravy.
Step 13: Add 1 cup of milk to the skillet, bring everything to a boil over high heat while stirring continuously.
Step 14: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 5 minutes, allowing it to thicken.
Step 15: Serve the crispy chicken immediately with the creamy gravy on the side.

Gina, your Southern cooking skills are top-notch! I can recognize a great Southern recipe when I taste it :) For those who find this recipe bland, I recommend trying a seasoned flour like Kentucky Kernel. Addressing the concern about using too much oil to cook the chicken, I believe that following Gina's recipe precisely will result in perfectly crispy fried chicken that remains juicy inside. I must say, trying someone else's recipe and having it turn out so delicious was a delightful experience! Thank you, Gina!

I was blown away by how incredible this meal was! While many raved about the delicious gravy, I personally felt that the chicken stole the show. I made some modifications by using garlic salt instead of garlic powder, adding onion salt, and doubling the spices. I also reduced the amount of oil to 1 1/2 cups and found that flipping the chicken as it cooked worked perfectly. Additionally, I doubled the gravy and poured it over creamy mashed potatoes. It was absolutely heavenly!

This fried chicken recipe is truly exceptional. By doubling the spices, utilizing a cast iron skillet, and marinating the chicken in milk overnight with a dash of apple cider vinegar, the flavors were intensified to perfection. After rinsing and drying the chicken, allowing it to come to room temperature for 30 minutes ensured a crispy coating when fried. The gravy was simply outstanding, and complemented the meal perfectly. I even prepared skillet biscuits and an apple skillet cake beforehand, making it a delightful Sunday Skillet Supper experience.

My boyfriend, who hails from Kentucky and is a fried chicken connoisseur, absolutely loved this recipe! I tweaked it slightly by reducing the amount of flour and increasing all the spices. Instead of the flour mixture for the gravy, I opted for a chicken gravy packet combined with milk, chicken broth, and pan drippings. The result was incredibly tasty - the chicken turned out perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. This has now become my favorite fried chicken recipe!

I substituted Washington chicken breading mix for the flour in this recipe, but otherwise I followed it exactly, and the result was absolutely delicious!

Crispy and delicious! I cooked drumsticks instead, which reduced the cooking time. I skipped using a thermometer for the oil, resulting in slightly darker but still tasty chicken. The gravy was great. The only hiccup was using garlic powder instead of garlic salt, so it was a bit bland. However, my husband absolutely enjoyed it!

I made chicken fried chicken instead of regular fried chicken and it turned out really delicious. I added rosemary to the seasoning and tenderized the chicken, cooking it for 4 minutes on each side. I think I need to thicken the sauce a bit more next time.
