Air Fryer Hush Puppies Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoons baking powder
- teaspoon salt
- teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more to taste)
- teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons minced onion
- 2 tablespoons minced bell pepper
- cup low-fat buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Nonfat cooking spray
Directions
Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 390F (198C) following the manufacturer's instructions. Line the bottom of the air fryer basket with foil and spray it with nonfat cooking spray.
Step 2: In a large bowl, mix together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.
Step 3: Add the minced onion and bell pepper to the dry ingredients and stir well to combine.
Step 4: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes.
Step 5: Using a 2-tablespoon scoop, drop portions of the batter into the prepared air fryer basket, leaving space between each scoop. Lightly spray the top of the batter with cooking spray.
Step 6: Cook in the preheated air fryer for 9 to 10 minutes or until the hush puppies are golden brown, crispy on the outside, and fully cooked on the inside. Serve hot.
Cooks Notes
Air fryers vary in heat distribution, so check the hush puppies occasionally for doneness. If cooking in batches, you can place all the hush puppies back into the fryer for 1-2 minutes to reheat them.
This recipe yields 12 good-sized hush puppies using a 2-tablespoon scoop. If you decide to make smaller hush puppies, adjust the cooking time accordingly.
