How to Make Taco Bake

You'll be shocked at how easy it is to make this taco bake. Here's a brief description of how to prepare the casserole:

  1. Step 1: Brown the Beef
Cook the ground beef and onions in a skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned, which should take about 7 to 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Step 2: Cook the Taco Mixture
Stir in water and taco seasoning, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 2 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Lower the heat and add refried beans, olives, green chiles, and salsa. Cook everything together for 3 to 4 minutes until heated through.
  3. Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Place half of the broken taco shells in the bottom of a prepared 9x13-inch baking dish. Top them with half of the ground beef mixture, followed by half of the shredded Cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers one more time with the remaining taco shells, beef mixture, and cheese.
  4. Step 4: Bake
Bake the casserole in the preheated oven at 375F (190C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

How Long to Cook Taco Bake?
We recommend a bake time of 20 to 25 minutes. You'll know the taco bake is done when the casserole is warmed through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

What to Serve With Taco Bake?
You can top this taco bake just like you would traditional tacos. Consider adding shredded lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or taco sauce for extra flavor and freshness.

How to Store Taco Bake
Store any leftovers in an airtight in the fridge for up to five days. Reheat in the microwave or in the oven until fully warmed through.

How to Freeze Taco Bake
Assemble the casserole in a baking dish, ideally a disposable one for easy freezing. Wrap the entire dish tightly with storage wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil. Freeze for up to three months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge overnight, then bake as directed, adding a few extra minutes to the cook time if needed.

Community Tips and Praise

"The kids loved it. I love the versatility of the recipe. This time I used Doritos instead of taco shells and fire roasted tomatoes. Next time, I think I'll try lime tortilla chips and add guacamole, shredded lettuce, and sour cream to really dress it up," says one home cook.

"This is my kind of recipe...easy and tasty! Also quick to throw together. It was a big hit with our guests," another reviewer shares.

Ingredients

  • 1 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • cup water
  • 1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
  • 1 (10 ounce) can refried beans (optional)

  • cup salsa
  • 15 taco shells, broken up (or more to taste)

  4. Place half of the broken taco shells in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer with half of the ground beef mixture, then half of the shredded Cheddar cheese. Repeat these layers once more.

This was delicious. The only real changes I made were using flour tortilla and layered it like a lasagna, two tortillas per layer (I used a small casserole dish ... maybe 9x4) and instead of the salsa, I used a 15 oz can of diced tomatoes. I served it with nacho scoops. Yummy... will definitely be making again.

I like the looks of this one, although I will leave out the refried beans. I think broken Tostitos would work or any corn tortilla chip. I plan to make this very soon!

Great recipe! I chose to use ground pork rather than ground beef for an inexpensive substitute and omitted the salsa choosing to add a bit more taco seasoning instead. I used authentic corn tortilla chips and since my family loves spicy Mexican food I added 1 small finely diced jalapeno. I made 3 nicely sized individual casseroles and they gave this recipe 5⭐. Quick, easy & convenient.

This is a great recipe. Easy to make, but I did change it a bit. I used chicken instead of beef. added garlic, green and red pepper diced to onion mixture, then refried beans with chili added. mild taco sauce packet, 1 cup of salsa, and 1 cup of corn. I layered the same way, and saved my olives for garnish when the cheese melts and dish is completed. Excellent. Thank you!!

This is fabulous as is! I really am disappointed when someone gives us a review on a revised version of what was posted and not the original. If there is an allergy substitution, that's totally acceptable and really helpful.

I added black beans and corn to this casserole. I brought it to our ski weekend and there was nothing left. Everyone loved it. I served extra salsa, lime wedges, and sour cream on the side. I also topped it off with some chopped cilantro.

Great base recipe. I did make one major change, using flour tortillas instead of the hard shells. Does that make it a burrito bake? (: >) Son also requested I try this with shredded chicken since he likes that better than hamburger. Will edit this once I try it.

Added black beans instead of refried and used tortilla chips instead of broken taco shells. Served with fresh chopped lettuce, tomato and avocado on top, so more like a tostada (or nachos) Delicious!!! It was a hit!

Easy format to adapt to whats on hand. Used impossible burger (just looking to go w less meat), browned flour tortillas & ripped to place in smaller oval dish since we're a small family. Had enough filling to make 4 good sized tacos for another meal so this recipe served double/triple duty for family of 3. Layered & followed as written. This will be on our dinner schedule for school year!

it was great I made it for dinner today, instead of the taco shells I used crescent rolls on the bottom then a layer of the beef mix, layer of cheese, beef mix, cheese, then another can of crescent rolls. 2 8 ounce cans of crescent rolls

May want less refried beans but it’s the cooks call.

I have made for large crowds and find everyone loves. The only changes I have made is using less chiles per pound and using Ole Corn Tostados instead of taco shells

I added onions, garlic and poblanos as I was simmering the meat with the taco seasoning. I used corn tortillas on the bottom and chips for the second layer. Added the olives, tomatoes, lettuce and sour crème on the plate so it would all be fresh. Delicious

So tasty! I used green olives instead of black and what an improved flavour change. I've made again as well.

This was a nice recipe. I enjoyed the velvety texture of the refried beans. The versatility of the dish and it was easy to make. Even reheating it in the microwave, this dish was good. Thanks for sharing!

I made this tonight for dinner, and my husband said "it's a keeper!". Good way to use leftover beef from tacos we had the night before. We had about 3/4 lb of cooked beef, which was enough to make 1/2 recipe. I used tortillas which were torn that we couldn't use for tacos the night before; and for 2nd layer I used the last of our tortilla chips. And we had leftover refried beans from the night before too. We didn't want tacos again, so making this taco casserole was a great way to have an entirely different dinner using up our leftover taco ingredients. It was really yummy!! And so easy to make.

Terrific recipe! I am not a fan of black olives, so I left those out, and instead of salsa, I used a 4oz can of green chilies along with a can of diced tomatoes and more chilies. Not really a fan of the broken taco shells, didn't taste bad or anything, but will probably find a substitute next time I make it.
