Bistec Encebollado (Cuban Steak and Onions) Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe yields 4 servings. Quantities are adjusted automatically, but cooking times and techniques remain consistent.
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 (1 pound) New York strip steak, thinly sliced
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons sofrito
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Directions
Step 1: In a small bowl, mix together salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Sprinkle this seasoning evenly over both sides of the steak slices.
Step 2: Place the seasoned steak into a resealable plastic bag. Add the sliced onions, white vinegar, and onion powder. Gently massage the bag so the steak and onions are coated evenly. Seal and refrigerate for 1 hour to marinate.
Step 3: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the steak and onion mixture. Cook while stirring until the steak is nicely browned and the onions are soft, about 4 to 6 minutes. Remove the steak and onions from the skillet and set aside, keeping them warm.
Step 4: In the same skillet, pour in the beef broth, add the sofrito and minced garlic. Cook over medium heat until the garlic turns golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Step 5: Return the steak and onions to the skillet. Cover and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer gently until the steak is cooked through and onions are tender, approximately 15 minutes.

Delicious and simple meal! I substituted with my homemade sofrito, which is packed with garlic, so I omitted the extra garlic. I usually expect some tomato in the sauce, so this was a new experience for me, but it was still bursting with flavor!
