How to Make Baked BBQ Drumsticks?

Homemade baked drumsticks are super easy to make with chicken drumsticks and a homemade barbecue sauce. Here's what you can expect:

Start by making the barbecue sauce, combining ketchup, vinegar, water, brown sugar, butter, salt, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, and chili powder. Coat the drumsticks with the sauce, then bake them until the juices run clear and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165F.

Step-by-step Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400F (200C) and get it ready to bake the drumsticks.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together cup of ketchup, cup of white vinegar, cup of water (optional), cup of brown sugar, 4 teaspoons of butter (cut into small chunks), 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons of dry mustard, and 2 teaspoons of chili powder. Adjust the ingredients to taste if needed.
  3. Coat the drumsticks: Arrange the chicken drumsticks in a 7x11-inch baking dish. Pour the prepared sauce over the drumsticks, ensuring each piece is well coated.
  4. Cover and bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 1 hour, turning the drumsticks halfway through cooking.
  5. Check for doneness: The drumsticks are ready when the juices run clear and a digital thermometer inserted near the bone reads 165F (74C).
  6. Serve and enjoy: Once cooked through, remove from the oven and serve hot. Enjoy the tender, juicy drumsticks with the flavorful barbecue glaze!

Additional Tips:

  • Should you add barbecue sauce before or after baking? For this recipe, the barbecue sauce is applied before baking, but you can always add extra sauce after baking for an extra boost of flavor.
  • Should you bake covered or uncovered? Bake the drumsticks covered with foil to keep them tender. Remove the foil during the last few minutes to allow the skin to crisp up.
  • How long to bake BBQ drumsticks? Depending on the size of the drumsticks, bake them for about an hour. They are done when the internal temperature reaches 165F (74C), and the juices run clear.

Oven BBQ Chicken Drumsticks Recipe

Oven BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

History and Origins

The BBQ chicken drumstick is an iconic American dish, often associated with the casual, comforting flavors of summer cookouts and backyard barbecues. The practice of cooking meat with barbecue sauce can be traced back to the early days of American colonial history, where indigenous people introduced European settlers to the method of slow-cooking meats over an open flame. BBQ, in its modern form, is deeply rooted in Southern cuisine and the culture of the American South, with each region developing its own distinctive sauces and cooking styles. Oven-baked BBQ chicken, as featured in this recipe, became a popular variation due to its convenience, especially for those without access to a grill or smoker. Over time, oven-baked BBQ chicken has become a beloved dish for all seasons, offering a way to enjoy the smoky, tangy flavors of BBQ without the need for a grill.

Regional Variations

While BBQ chicken is widely popular across the United States, the sauce used and the cooking technique can vary by region. In the South, especially in states like Texas, North Carolina, and Tennessee, BBQ is more than just a dishit's a cultural tradition. Texas BBQ often incorporates smoky flavors with a tangy tomato-based sauce, while North Carolina BBQ tends to use a vinegar-based sauce with a bit of heat. The oven-baked variation, like this one, simplifies the process, making it accessible for home cooks, regardless of their location. While this recipe is relatively universal, feel free to experiment with different sauces based on your regional preferences.

Difference from Similar Dishes

Oven-baked BBQ chicken drumsticks differ from other similar dishes like grilled BBQ chicken in several ways. Traditional grilled BBQ chicken requires a grill, allowing the meat to be cooked over an open flame, which imparts a distinct smoky flavor. On the other hand, oven-baked BBQ chicken relies on the dry heat of the oven, which can create a crispy, caramelized outer layer while keeping the chicken juicy on the inside. This method is often preferred when you want the BBQ sauce to stick to the chicken, giving it a rich, sticky glaze. Additionally, oven-baked chicken requires less active attention compared to grilling, making it a more convenient choice for many home cooks.

Where Its Commonly Served

Oven BBQ chicken drumsticks are commonly served at family gatherings, casual dinners, and barbecues. They are a popular choice for meal prep, as the recipe is simple to follow and can feed a group. This dish pairs beautifully with a variety of sides, such as mashed potatoes, coleslaw, corn on the cob, or roasted vegetables. In restaurants, it is often featured on the menu as a casual comfort food option, perfect for satisfying a crowd. While it's most often associated with American cuisine, its universal appeal makes it a favorite around the world.

Fun Facts

  • The tradition of eating chicken drumsticks dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who are believed to have been the first to roast birds over an open fire.
  • BBQ chicken is often considered a quintessential American comfort food, yet many countries around the world have their own versions of BBQ dishes, from Argentina's asado to South Korea's bulgogi.
  • Oven-baked BBQ chicken is an easy and affordable way to replicate the flavors of traditional BBQ without needing a grill or smoker.
  • In the U.S., there are festivals dedicated to BBQ, where enthusiasts gather to showcase their skills in grilling and smoking meats, often with unique interpretations of BBQ chicken.

I have worked in the restaurant industry all my life and have to say this recipe is restaurant quality, I made a couple of subtle changes, using maple syrup instead of half of the sugar and a dash of tobasco sauce.

Wow this was delicious! Mine turned out great! I omitted the water. Only used 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tbsp of brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt. I added 1/4 black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon tabasco and 4 cloves minced garlic. I omitted the dry mustard simply because I don't have any :-) I also marinated the chicken in the sauce for 2 hours and baked it uncovered. It was perfect! No sauce remaining at all in the pan. I will definitely make this again. But this time I will put more tabasco as we want our chicken a little spicy :-) Thank you for the great recipe!

I cooked without the barbeque sauce. It was very good. I added zesty italian to coat, Tbsp of maple syrup, & lemon juice (medium size). Cooked covered very slow at 325 for 50 minutes. Then cooked uncovered for about 5 to 10 mins for crispiness. My husband really enjoyed!

The drumsticks were tasty. I did them in the Super Wave cooker on a pie plate and coated the chicken with the BBQ mixture without the water. I halved the amount of brown sugar but added about a tablespoon of maple syrup as someone on their review had mentioned using the syrup. It only took 25 minutes in the cooker which was set at 400 deg. Thank you for a great recipe.

Great recipe, thank you for sharing. I did not add the water as suggested in the video. I did however add a bit of Jack Daniel's whiskey and some honey. I also added sautéed garlic. I cooked the sauce just a bit on the stove although it may not have been needed. I just wanted a headstart in thickening the sauce. I also turned on the broiler the last 10 minutes or so to get them a little charbroiled. Delicious. Will definitely make this recipe again! Thank you!

This recipe turned out some delicious drumsticks! That said I didn’t follow the recipe exactly according to ingredients I Had on hand. I made the BBQ sauce separately in a sauce pan to make sure it was spot on. Replaced brown sugar with pancake syrup and used prepared mustard instead of powdered. Upside to making it separate, I have a half jar in the fridge. Really next time I would cook chicken dry with spices, because the skin was rubbery cooked with sauce. The chicken can be tossed in sauce after it’s done like most wing recipes.

My son made this chicken for supper tonight. Noticed the sauce was thin when he took out of oven so I put chicken and sauce in pot. Then shook corn starch and water mixture in a jar. Heated pot with chicken and sauce medium heat and added corn starch/water mixture, it thickens upon heating/light boil. Voila, it was delicious! We definitely make this again.

Made in a pinch and served six with some sides. Can be made with general household ingredients although some altercations were made to the recipe it came out delicious and reminiscent of barbecue chicken. Personal recommendation is don’t add water and also towards the end leave to crisp in the oven uncovered and brush with BBQ sauce and honey.

I made this dish last night with a couple of small changes. I used four drumsticks and four thighs as that's what I had. I also doubled the sauce and added cornstarch to thicken it up some, as it was way too thin to be called BBQ sauce. Followed the cooking instructions until I got to the halfway point and when I turned the chicken over, I didn't recover it. It had to bake for several minutes longer but came out tender, juicy and browned nicely. My husband raved about it being the best chicken ever! I loved it as well. I will be adding this to our regular menu.

I cheat on this. I use the temp and timetable and 2 small 18 oz bottles bbq sauce. I make a large package of drumsticks about 12 of them and a corning casserole dish use 1 bottle to cook them for the hour at 400 covered tightly, then drain the sauce and grease out using a colander and a bowl, return to casserole dish squeeze out second bottle of bbq sauce over drumsticks, stir lightly with wooden spoon, and return to 350 oven uncovered for 20 minutes. they come out covered in thick sticky bbq sauce this way.

Good solid recipe, I will make this again. I tweaked the recipe based on the comments of others: added garlic, used only 1 tsp of chili powder, used apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar and added no water. I baked it uncovered for 1 hour, turning pieces halfway through per the recipe and basting 3 times with the sauce in the pan. It was moist enough even being baked without being covered. My husband and I both enjoyed this recipe and I will use this recipe again. I liked the balance of flavors. Much better than when I have baked chicken and used bottled bbq sauce.

I followed the sauce recipe exactly (without water) but the chicken was swimming in its juice and the sauce once it was cooked. Will cook uncovered next time or will cook covered for first half then uncovered for the second so the sauce will thicken and stick to the chicken. Great sauce recipe, though! I'm going to try it as a marinade next time we cook ribs. Yummy!

I followed the recipe the first time (but without the water), and the outcome was wonderful. Obviously the overall taste depends mainly on the sauce. The cooking method worked very well except I don't think it's necessary to cover with tinfoil. Next time, I'll just use a BBQ sauce that we like but not bother with making sauce - fast, easy and delicious!

I wanted to make sure we had leftovers, so I tripled the recipe, and then I used a bottled bar-b-que sauce (I had run out of ketchup). Cooked for 1/2 hr covered, turned the drumsticks, then another 1/2 hr covered. After that, I removed the foil and proceeded to turn and baste every 15 min until done. They looked great and were amazingly juicy and tender. The family LOVED them!

My husband absolutely loved this! I made a few tweaks based on recommendations—substituted maple syrup, omitted the water, and used ancho chili powder instead of regular. I also opted for white wine vinegar since I prefer the flavor. It turned out great, and I’ll definitely be making it again!
