Turkey Shepherd's Pie Recipe
Mashed Potato Topped Turkey Pie
Servings: 6
Ingredients
Mashed Potato Topping:
- 3 large potatoes, peeled
- cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Turkey Filling:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 (4.5 ounce) can sliced mushrooms
- 1 large carrot, shredded
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder
- teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Directions
- Start the topping: Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- While the potatoes are cooking, preheat your oven to 375F (190C).
- Prepare the filling: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and saut until it softens and becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Stir in the mushrooms, shredded carrot, chopped parsley, minced garlic, chicken bouillon powder, and dried thyme. Continue cooking and stirring until the meat is fully browned and cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir well to combine. Let it cook for another minute to remove the raw flour taste. Remove the skillet from heat and set the filling aside.
- Finish the topping: Drain the cooked potatoes and transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Add the warm milk and butter, then mash the potatoes to your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble the pie: Transfer the turkey filling into a deep-dish pie pan or a casserole dish. Spread the mashed potato topping evenly over the filling. Use a fork to swirl the topping and create a decorative pattern.
- Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake until the mashed potato topping is golden brown and slightly crispy on top, about 30 minutes.

Turkey Shepherd's Pie is a delicious and comforting dish that has become a beloved part of many home-cooked meals. While it is often associated with British and American culinary traditions, this dish has evolved in various forms over the years. A perfect blend of savory turkey, tender vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes, Turkey Shepherd's Pie is an updated variation of the classic Shepherd's Pie, traditionally made with lamb. Below, we explore the history, regional variations, and interesting facts about this delightful comfort food.
Origin of Shepherd's Pie
Shepherd's Pie, in its original form, hails from England and dates back to the late 18th century. It was created as a way to use up leftover lamb or mutton, which was often minced and cooked with vegetables before being topped with mashed potatoes and baked. The pie was originally a frugal, practical dish for working-class families. Over time, it became a staple in British cuisine and later spread to other English-speaking countries, including the United States. The turkey version, as seen in Turkey Shepherd's Pie, likely emerged in the 20th century as an alternative for those who preferred poultry or had leftover turkey from holidays like Thanksgiving.
Regional Variations
While the classic Shepherd's Pie is associated with lamb, the dish has adapted to regional tastes and available ingredients. In Ireland, for example, beef may be used in place of lamb, creating what is often called a "Cottage Pie." In the United States, turkey is a popular substitute, especially around the holidays when there is a surplus of leftover turkey. The addition of different vegetables, such as corn or peas, is also common in various regions, reflecting the abundance of seasonal produce.
Differences from Similar Dishes
Turkey Shepherd's Pie is often compared to its close relative, the Cottage Pie, and the more modern variations that use beef or other proteins. The primary difference lies in the type of meat used. Shepherd's Pie is traditionally made with lamb, while Cottage Pie uses beef, and Turkey Shepherd's Pie uses ground turkey. Each variation has a distinct flavor profile, with the lamb version being the most robust and the turkey offering a lighter, more delicate taste. Additionally, some versions of Shepherd's Pie are topped with cheese or gravy, depending on regional preferences.
Where It's Usually Served
Turkey Shepherd's Pie is a dish typically served as a hearty family meal, perfect for dinner. It is often enjoyed in homes during the colder months due to its warm, comforting nature. It's also a fantastic way to repurpose leftover turkey from holiday feasts, making it a popular post-Thanksgiving dish in the United States. In restaurants, you may find it served as a lunch or dinner option, often alongside a green salad or crusty bread. Its especially common in casual eateries that specialize in comfort food or British-inspired fare.
Interesting Facts About Turkey Shepherd's Pie
- The term "Shepherd's Pie" comes from the use of lamb (sheep), while "Cottage Pie" refers to beef. The difference in terminology is a way to distinguish between the meats used in the filling.
- Though the traditional dish is topped with mashed potatoes, variations with sweet potatoes or even mashed cauliflower have gained popularity in recent years for a healthier twist.
- In the UK, Shepherds Pie is often served with peas or other vegetables, and sometimes even a dollop of mint sauce on the side.
- While Shepherd's Pie is typically savory, some versions have included a hint of sweetness by adding ingredients like caramelized onions or a small amount of brown sugar in the filling.
Turkey Shepherd's Pie is a versatile, flavorful dish that can be customized to suit various tastes and dietary preferences. Whether youre using leftover Thanksgiving turkey or fresh ground turkey, this comforting dish is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

I prepared this dish tonight with a slight modification - I opted for cauliflower instead of potatoes to give it a healthier twist. After boiling cauliflower and garlic, I mixed in horseradish and cheese while mashing, and it turned out delicious with this recipe. My husband adores shepherd's pie, but we've been aiming to make healthier food choices. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Review Rewritten: I was thrilled with the outcome of this dish! I was looking for a way to repurpose leftover turkey and mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving and stumbled upon this recipe. Instead of using ground turkey, I diced up my pre-cooked turkey (approximately 13oz cooked weight) in a food processor along with an extra can of mushrooms to help it stay together better. To compensate for the lack of juices, I added a bit more olive oil when combining the meat mixture with the onion and carrot. The seasoning was spot on! Everyone in my family absolutely adored it! Thank you for sharing such a fantastic recipe! :-)

I enjoyed it, my husband really enjoyed it, but our son did not care for it. I used a mini food processor to chop the onion, carrot, and garlic, then sautéed them together. I personally prefer fresh mushrooms, so I cooked them in a separate pan with a bit of butter. After draining and stirring in the chicken bouillon, I noticed it was a bit dry, so I poured in about half a cup of chicken broth. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

I would like to express my appreciation for providing this recipe. I primarily referred to it to determine the baking time. Although I made some adjustments to the ingredients by using Thanksgiving dinner leftovers to make a shepherds pie, I believed that the cooking times would remain similar. For those looking for inspiration, here is a list of the ingredients I used. I utilized homemade whole wheat stuffing as a base crust, pressing it down into the bottom of the dish. I then added a layer of shredded cheddar cheese. Following that, I placed shredded white turkey meat, topped with our homemade turkey gravy. The next layer consisted of most of the leftover broccoli casserole, topped with more shredded cheddar cheese. The final layer was homemade mashed potatoes, with an additional sprinkle of cheese on top. I assembled everything in a Pampered Chef deep dish stone pie plate. The result was absolutely delicious!

I made this dish for Easter and it was a hit! After reading several reviews, I decided to make a few adjustments. Instead of using canned mushrooms, I opted for 8oz of fresh sliced mushrooms. I also used 24oz of turkey, as that was the package size available. However, my family still prefers my beef and lamb pie. I believe the key to a creamier and more flavorful filling is adding cream of mushroom soup. Mix equal parts of soup and milk in a separate bowl and add it to the cooked turkey mixture until you reach the desired consistency. You can also try using cream of celery soup. I enhanced the dish with fresh thyme and served it with garlic mashed potatoes mixed with chives. This recipe is definitely a keeper. I will be making it again for sure.

This dish was absolutely delicious with a few enhancements: I included 1/2 cup of chicken broth in the carrot/turkey/onion mixture and allowed it to simmer slightly before baking to enhance the moisture, while still including bouillon; I diced the carrots and sautéed them with the onions initially to ensure they became tender; I substituted canned peas for fresh mushrooms; I roasted 4 cloves of garlic by drizzling them with olive oil, wrapping them in foil, and baking them until tender, then mixed the mashed cloves into the mashed potatoes; I incorporated about 1/3 cup of sour cream into the mashed potatoes; and I sprinkled a bit of garlic powder into the mixture for extra flavor.

I prepared a delicious Shepherd's Pie by browning ground turkey breast meat in olive oil with salt, dried parsley, and ground thyme. I added water and Chicken Better than Bouillon for flavor. I diced carrots, celery, and fresh corn and boiled them until tender, then mixed them with the meat. Blanched pearl onions were diced and added to the mixture, while the rest were caramelized and added to mashed potatoes. I sautéed sliced mushrooms, green pepper, and minced garlic separately before adding them to the meat mixture. I made a roux with butter, flour, water, Chicken Better than Bouillon, and sour cream, then combined it with the meat and vegetables. The mixture was placed in a pan, topped with the potato-onion mix and cheddar cheese, and baked. My daughter-in-law loved it and asked for the recipe. I recommend serving it with petite green beans. These preparation techniques really enhance the flavors of the dish.

Review rewritten: I made some modifications to this recipe by adding extra vegetables like green pepper, frozen peas, yellow squash, and carrots that I needed to use up. I also used 2 tablespoons of water with the bouillon cube instead of a teaspoon of powdered bouillon. It took around 35-40 minutes to bake until the potatoes on top were nicely browned. The dish turned out to be absolutely delicious! I will definitely be making it again!

I modified the recipe by incorporating Worcestershire sauce, fresh mushrooms instead of canned ones, dried parsley in place of fresh parsley, Greek yogurt in the mashed potatoes, and some water in the meat. I finely chopped the mushrooms and grated the carrot to sneak in the veggies for my kids to enjoy. I am rating this recipe 5 stars as my usually picky eaters devoured it. Finally, a healthy dish that my children love! Plus, it fit perfectly in an 8x8 baking dish.

This dish was excellent! I made a few small modifications as I didn't have any thyme, so I replaced it with poultry seasoning and a dash of rubbed sage. I opted for fresh mushrooms instead of bouillon cubes or powder, and sautéed them with the onion. I prepared and assembled the dish in the morning, refrigerating it until an hour before dinner. Since I doubled the recipe, it took an hour to reheat, but it was worth the wait!

This dish was fantastic! We made a few adjustments to cater to our preferences. We used approximately 6 medium Idaho potatoes and added milk and salted butter to achieve a thick and creamy consistency. For the meat mixture, we included 2 carrots, 2 celery ribs, skipped the mushrooms (my husband doesn't like them), added 1 teaspoon of dried parsley, and about 3 cloves of garlic. We followed the rest of the ingredients as stated. While cooking, we decided not to drain the turkey meat after cooking to prevent it from drying out. We topped the mashed potatoes with a shredded blend of 4 Italian cheeses and baked it for just 20 minutes. It turned out absolutely delicious! We will definitely make it again.

Added green beans, corn, and peas to the dish, along with fresh rosemary and a hint of thyme. Swapped Bob's mashed potatoes for a convenient meal option. Finished off with a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Simply delicious!

I made a few adjustments based on what ingredients I had available. I substituted chicken stock for the bouillon cube and added extra spices to the turkey while cooking. After taking the dish out of the oven, I topped the potatoes with cheese. My boyfriend and I both loved it, and I definitely plan to make it again. I forgot to include Worcestershire sauce as suggested by others, so I'll be sure to try that next time.
