Sloppy Joes Recipe
Sloppy Joes are the ultimate comfort food. This classic recipe will take you back to simpler times while satisfying your cravings for something hearty and delicious. It's quick, easy, and made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
A Sloppy Joe is essentially a ground beef sandwich, with onions and green peppers, all smothered in a tangy, tomato-based sauce and served on a hamburger bun. This beloved sandwich likely originated in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s, thanks to a cook named Joe, who created what was known as the "loose meat sandwich."
How to Make Sloppy Joes
Follow these simple steps to make this classic dish:
- Cook the beef, onion, and green pepper. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat for about 3 to 4 minutes until some fat starts to render. Add chopped onions and bell peppers. Continue cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes, until the beef is fully cooked, and the vegetables are tender.
- Drain excess liquids and stir in the remaining ingredients. Once the beef mixture is cooked, drain any excess liquid if needed. Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer and serve. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Spoon the beef mixture onto split hamburger buns.
Nicole's Top Sloppy Joe Tips
- Use lean beef. Nicole prefers not to drain the meat after cooking. Instead, she uses the rendered fat to saut the onions and bell peppers. To avoid excess grease, she opts for lean ground beef.
- Go for the budget-friendly buns. According to Nicole, the best Sloppy Joe experience comes from using cheap hamburger buns that will soak up all the flavorful sauce.
- Overfill the bun. Dont be shy with the filling! Pile the meat mixture high so that some spills out of the bun. Its the perfect excuse to scoop up the extra with some crispy potato chips!
What to Serve With Sloppy Joes
For a truly satisfying meal, pair your Sloppy Joes with a side of homemade sweet potato fries, or opt for any of these diner-style sides:
- Homemade Crispy Seasoned French Fries
- Homemade Mac and Cheese
- Refrigerator Dill Pickles
- Restaurant-Style House Salad

Sloppy Joes are a beloved comfort food in America. This easy-to-make dish is typically made with ground beef, a savory tomato-based sauce, and served on a hamburger bun. But there's more to this iconic sandwich than just the ingredients. Here's a look at its rich history, regional variations, and some interesting facts that you may not have known!
History of Sloppy Joes
The origins of Sloppy Joes are often debated, but the most popular story traces it back to the 1930s in Sioux City, Iowa. The sandwich is said to have been created by a cook named Joe, who worked at a local diner. Joes creation, known as the loose meat sandwich, featured seasoned ground beef and was served on a bun. Over time, the recipe evolved into the Sloppy Joe we know today, with the addition of a tangy tomato-based sauce. The sandwich quickly gained popularity and became a staple of American comfort food.
Regional Variations of Sloppy Joes
While the classic Sloppy Joe is adored nationwide, regional variations exist. In the Midwest, the dish is often served with more tomato ketchup and a hint of sweetness from brown sugar. In some Southern states, you might find a smoky twist with the addition of BBQ sauce. On the West Coast, the dish might be made with leaner meats or even turkey for a healthier take on the traditional recipe. In some parts of the U.S., its also not uncommon to find Sloppy Joes served over mashed potatoes, adding an extra layer of comfort to the meal.
How Sloppy Joes Differ from Similar Dishes
While Sloppy Joes share similarities with other ground beef sandwiches like the Sloppy Joe or Loose Meat sandwich, the key difference is the sauce. The defining feature of a Sloppy Joe is the sweet and tangy tomato-based sauce, which is often made with ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and garlic powder. Unlike a standard burger or loose meat sandwich, which typically remains dry, the sauce in a Sloppy Joe adds moisture, making it a deliciously messy sandwich to eat. In comparison, dishes like the Manwich (a brand name) offer a pre-made version of the Sloppy Joe filling, though many prefer making it from scratch for more flavor and control over the ingredients.
Where Are Sloppy Joes Typically Served?
Sloppy Joes are often considered a classic diner or family-friendly dish. They are typically served in casual dining settings, such as local diners, school cafeterias, and fast food restaurants. In the home, Sloppy Joes are a popular choice for a quick weeknight dinner, especially when you're feeding a hungry crowd. They are also a favorite for barbecues, picnics, and potlucks, where they can easily be made in large batches. In some regions, especially during the winter months, they can be a warming, hearty meal that brings families together around the dinner table.
Fun Facts About Sloppy Joes
- Did you know that Sloppy Joes are often considered a "messy" sandwich? The name itself is a reference to how the sandwich can spill over the sides of the bun, creating a delicious yet chaotic eating experience!
- Theres a restaurant in Key West, Florida, named "Sloppy Joe's" that claims to have been the birthplace of the sandwich's name. Its said that Ernest Hemingway, a regular at the bar, was one of the first to call it a Sloppy Joe when ordering it in the 1930s.
- Sloppy Joes are often adapted into other cultures. For example, in Canada, some people use ground turkey or chicken as a leaner alternative, while others might incorporate a bit of chili seasoning for extra heat.
- There is a growing trend of vegetarian and vegan Sloppy Joes, with many recipes substituting ground beef with lentils, mushrooms, or plant-based proteins, offering a meat-free alternative for those looking for a lighter or vegetarian option.
Whether you enjoy them with a side of fries, a scoop of mashed potatoes, or just as a simple sandwich, Sloppy Joes will always hold a special place in the hearts of comfort food lovers. Its humble beginnings and versatility make it a dish that stands the test of time.

Best sloppy joes ever! My boyfriend absolutely loved it...instead of 3/4 cup of ketchup I only used 1/2 and replaced the other 1/4 with barbecue sauce. It turned out perfect..not too ketchupy or anything...oh and I also skipped the brown sugar - only because the barbecue sauce I was using already had brown sugar in it.

Much better than Manwich and SO easy! The best thing is it's made with ingredients I always have in the house and it's not a hundred ingredients either so it's fast to make. I always make more sauce than it calls for, I think it's too dry otherwise. If I make it with 1 lb. of meat I double the sauce, 2 lbs. I triple it, 3 lbs. I quadruple it, etc. It's great in the crockpot too; I make it in the morning when I have a minute and it sits in the crockpot on low all day. I've passed this recipe on to anyone who will take it.

I browned the ground beef, onion and green pepper. I then put the remaining ingredients into a crock pot and cooked on low for about 3-4 hours. This recipe was really simple & delicious.

This one always makes EVERYone happy! :) I add a tsp of liquid smoke, 1/2 c. bbq sauce and a tbsp of apple cider vinegar for a little zing. Then I mix a little mayo, garlic salt & parmesan cheese & spread it onto the buns. Add jack cheese to one side & broil until bubbley, then top with sloppy joe. A favorite in our house for sure! I'll never by Manwich again!! Thanks! :)

Great success. I diced green beans and onions (omitted green pepper), sautéed with s+p, set that aside. I veganized it by browning impossible burger, added the veg back in. Used 3/4c ketchup, dab of bbq sauce, dab of tomato paste, a good shake of garlic salt, 1 tsp dijon (no yellow on hand), only 1tsp brown sugar, a generous 1/2c water, and 1Tbsp quick oats (like I saw in another review). Simmered for ~10 mins once all combined. KILLER 10/10.

I simmered the cooked ground beef in a 1/2 cup of chicken broth, garlic powder, a small amount (1/2 tsp?) of onion powder instead of chopped onion, dried green pepper (1 TBS?) instead of chopped green pepper, a spoon of olive oil, and a I few crushed red pepper flakes (1/4 tsp?), covered, until it reduced to barely wet, to get it extra flavorful. Then I stirred in the ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar and let it simmer, covered, another 5 minutes. If it seems too flat at the end, try stirring in a little salt. If it seems too sweet try stirring in a spoon of fresh squeezed lemon or a spoon of vinegar.

Homemade Sloppy Joe’s are a hundred times better than that canned stuff! So easy to make too. I never liked eating onions in this, but you need them for flavor. So what I do is add the sauce ingredients into my blender and blend it until smooth. Drain off the fat and then add the sauce. Also I found that ketchup has enough sugar in it where I don’t add any brown sugar (once it’s too sweet it’s hard to take it out). But that’s my preference. Do yourself a favor and make this, you’ll be happily surprised at how much better it is than canned, processed Manwhich.

Wow! I didn’t realize how easy it is to make Untidy Josephs! I used green onions and a poblano pepper, and I washed the ketchup from the measuring cup with a little red wine. Lastly, I subbed the ground beef with ground chicken. It turned out amazing!

This is our 2nd go with this recipe and we love it with just a few minor adjustments. We added a bit more onion and green bell pepper and a jar of our home made salsa. This time we served it over mashed potatoes on toast, sprinkled with cheese. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!

I am a Hamburger from Germany and just came across Sloppy Joe on a travel blog. I had heard the name before, bud didn't know that it is food. I will surely give it a try. THANKS! I think it should be much easier to cook lose beef with a "wide variety" of ingredients, than it would be with a beef burger as such.

This is my third time making this. My first time was a disaster so I hesitated to try it again, but third times the charm. I never realized just how easy sloppy Joe is to make and this tastes so much better than Manwich. I like BBQ sauce more than ketchup, though, so for a single serving I only did a 1/2 cup ketchup and then a 1/4 cup BBQ and it was DELECTABLE. This third go around I added some pickled jalapeños into the meat and it was a fantastic addition. I'm positive this is going to become a favorite of mine.
