Easy Tuna Patties

History of Tuna Patties

The concept of fish cakes, including tuna patties, dates back centuries, with variations found in many coastal regions around the world. Early recipes often involved local fish and served as a way to stretch food supplies during lean times. In the United States, tuna became a popular choice for these patties after the widespread availability of canned tuna in the early 20th century. Tuna patties, in particular, became a staple of American home cooking, offering a simple, affordable, and protein-packed meal.

Regional Variations

Tuna patties are enjoyed in many regions, but each area adds its own twist to the recipe. In the Southern United States, they are often paired with a dollop of tartar sauce or served as a sandwich on a soft bun with pickles and lettuce. In Mediterranean countries, similar fish cakes might include ingredients like olives, capers, or even fresh herbs like parsley and dill, adding a distinctly herbal flavor to the dish. Across the globe, from Latin America to Southeast Asia, variations of fish cakes are found, often incorporating regional spices and flavorings.

What Makes Tuna Patties Unique?

While there are many types of fish cakes, tuna patties stand out for their simplicity and versatility. The main distinction lies in the use of canned tuna, which gives the patties a quick preparation time and a mildly savory flavor. Unlike crab cakes or salmon patties, which often require careful handling of delicate fish, tuna can be easily mashed into the mixture without compromising texture. Additionally, the use of breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese creates a crisp, golden exterior, setting tuna patties apart from other seafood cakes.

Where Are Tuna Patties Typically Served?

Tuna patties are a popular dish in home kitchens, especially for quick weeknight dinners or as a fun and simple appetizer. They are commonly served with a variety of side dishes, including salads, rice, or roasted vegetables. In restaurants, tuna patties may be found as a starter, often paired with tartar sauce or a spicy aioli. Their portability also makes them a favorite for picnic meals or packed lunches. As a comfort food, tuna patties can easily be made into a sandwich or burger, making them a versatile and adaptable option for any meal of the day.

Leftover tuna patties should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. If you want to store them for a longer period, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply pan-fry or bake them until they are heated through and crispy.

Yes, you can prepare the tuna mixture and shape the patties ahead of time. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before cooking. This helps the patties hold their shape better while frying.

To prevent tuna patties from falling apart, make sure to drain the tuna thoroughly to remove excess moisture. You can also refrigerate the patties for 30 minutes before frying to help them firm up. Additionally, adjusting the amount of breadcrumbs or Parmesan cheese can help bind the mixture more effectively.

Pretty good--these reminded me of the salmon patties my mother made for me when I was young. I had a little trouble with the first batch falling apart, but on my second batch I made the patties fatter (they kind of looked like baseballs in my skillet) and they seemed to hold together much better. I think next time I might add a little more of the onion and perhaps some other spice to make it a bit more zesty, but the hubs and I did enjoy these very much. Thanks for the recipe! I'll make them again sometime soon!

These tuna patties are easy & awesome! They came out perfect. It's important to make sure you drain the tuna well if it's packed in water, as the excess water can change the consistency and cause the patties to fall apart. For the best results, be sure to beat the eggs for at least 2 minutes before adding the breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese (I also added a bit of aged white cheddar), and seasonings. The mixture should have a sticky, gooey breadcrumb-like consistency. Then gently stir in the tuna, making sure to break up any large chunks. When it comes to cooking, pan-fry the patties over low heat until they're as firm as you'd like, about 5 minutes per side. I cooked mine in a cast iron skillet and found that covering with a lid helps them cook all the way through. The key is to not let the seasonings overpower the parmesan cheese, which is a really important flavor in these patties. Feel free to adjust the seasonings to your personal taste. Overall, following these steps closely will help ensure your tuna patties turn out perfectly every time! Note: I used minced garlic and chopped scallions vs onions. However, I would have chopped onions very fine or use onion powder to prevent thrm from falling apart. If too soft add a little more breadcrumbs and parmesen cheese to thicken.

I've always made tuna patties with some mashed potatoes, and then some Italian bread crumbs and beaten egg to bind them together. I also sauté some chopped onions in butter before adding them to the mixture, and two cans of drained tuna instead of three. After shaping them into patties, I roll them in more breadcrumbs and let them set for a few minutes before frying them. They are delicious! Tartar sauce is a must! The kids like ketchup as well. My mouth just watered....

I really liked these. I made 2 changes because I didn’t have what the recipe called for - I substituted dill pickle juice for the lemon juice and added 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning and used regular breadcrumbs. Turned out perfect with lots of flavour. Served them with tartar sauce, some rice and roasted veggies. Yum!

We used Albacore tuna, 3eggs, onion powder (didn’t have onion), lemon herb garnish (didn’t have lemon juice), used packets of Parmesan from pizza delivery (only Parmesan I had), Panko. No veg oil so fried them in butter. Husband liked it and gives it 4 stars. He said it was a little dry. Served with garden salad. Will make it again with better planning..

I cut the recipe in half because it was only me eating. But I did add a teaspoon of garlic scape pesto, quarter teaspoon salt free vegetable seasoning, two teaspoons dried home made chives, pepper flakes and unflavored panko instead of Italian. I also made a sauce to go with them.I changed the original recipe quite a bit , it is a very good base recipe. SAUCE: 2 tbs half fat mayo, 1/2 tsp srirracha sauce and 1 tsp Arby's horsey sauce.* In hindsight, I would have readded a little tuna water back into the mix. They cook well in a pan with a little olive oil!Very tasty. Definitely will make again.

The ingredients look great. The only thing that I would do differently is to let them firm up in the fridge for a while.

Very tasty. Liked the addition of the cheese. I refrigerated the patties before cooking and that helped hold the shape.

My toddler happily ate these dunked in ketchup… if that’s not a ringing endorsement of how yummy they are, I’m not sure what is! I made 2/3 the recipe using 2 cans of tuna and one egg, and added about a tablespoon of mayo to help it come together. Made 13 mini-size 2 inch patties.

Doubled the recipe. Used 1/3 cup Italian bread crumbs & 1/3 cup instant potato flakes. Mrs. Dash, 3 eggs, a dollop of sour cream & onion dip and a dollop of honey mustard dip, and a little milk. It turned out great and was very good!

Nice recipe when you don’t have much in the pantry. Usually everyone has a couple cans of tuna, egg , breadcrumb, lemon etc. I sautéed a bit of onion and celery red pepper and a little finely chopped jalapeño pepper from the garden also some dill I had dried. Combined all together and used leftover bread crumb and dredged the cakes . Nice crunch and lovely tang from the Lemon . Served with stuffed zucchini and a dill tartar sauce. I’d like to try it as a sandwich on a soft roll.. with lettuce tomato and pickles.😊

Great recipe, and kids love these! The only things I would tweak: green onion instead of white, and double-down on the lemon juice. Also, adding a sprinkle of salt on the outside while they are still hot helps elevate things a bit...a nice finishing touch.

You need at least 3 eggs with all those bread crumbs to make a proper mix to form patties, otherwise yummy.
