BBQ Chicken Breasts in the Oven Recipe

BBQ Chicken Breasts in the Oven Recipe

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 whole skin-on, bone-in chicken breasts
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (such as Sweet Baby Ray's)
  • Kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 425F (220C). Line a baking pan with heavy-duty foil to make cleanup easier.

Step 2: Prepare the chicken breasts by cutting off the rib meat if desired, but make sure to leave the skin on. Season both sides of the chicken generously with kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper.

Step 3: Place the seasoned chicken breasts in the prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until juices begin to appear on the surface of the chicken.

Step 4: Reduce the oven temperature to 375F (190C). Remove the pan from the oven and generously pour 1/2 of the barbecue sauce over the chicken, ensuring the sauce evenly coats the breasts.

Step 5: Return the pan to the oven and continue baking for 20 minutes, allowing the chicken to cook and absorb the flavor of the sauce.

Step 6: After 20 minutes, remove the pan again and pour the remaining barbecue sauce over the chicken. Continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center and the skin is crispy.

Step 7: Check the internal temperature of the chicken with an instant-read thermometer. The temperature should read 165F (74C) near the bone to ensure it's fully cooked.

Step 8: Serve hot and enjoy your delicious barbecue chicken breasts!

Cook's Note

The times listed are based on my oven settings. Ovens may vary, so adjust accordingly. If you prefer, you can grill the chicken instead of baking it. Just be aware that grilling requires more attention and frequent sauce applications. You may also use boneless chicken breasts, but they tend to dry out more easily, so adjust cooking times if using boneless pieces. Feel free to use any barbecue sauce you like, whether homemade or store-bought.

Ideal for busy weeknights or casual gatherings, this recipe requires minimal preparation and offers a satisfying meal in under an hour. Whether you are cooking for a family or preparing a quick dinner, this oven-baked dish delivers delicious results with little fuss.

History of BBQ Chicken Breasts

The tradition of barbecue cooking dates back to indigenous cultures in the Caribbean and the American South. While grilling meat over an open flame has existed for centuries, BBQ chicken has become one of the most beloved dishes in modern American cuisine. The use of barbecue sauce, specifically, evolved as a way to enhance the flavors of smoked or grilled meats. BBQ Chicken Breasts, though popularized in the United States, has variations in many regions, with each adding their personal twist of seasonings or sauces.

Regional Differences

BBQ chicken recipes vary greatly depending on the region. In the United States, BBQ chicken is often associated with Southern cooking, where slow-cooked, smoky flavors reign supreme. In contrast, other regions, such as the Midwest, might favor sweeter, tomato-based sauces. The way the chicken is prepared can also differ; while some opt for grilling, others prefer baking or even deep-frying, creating a variety of textures and tastes. This recipe, which uses the oven, offers a more accessible option for those without access to an outdoor grill.

Differences from Similar Dishes

BBQ Chicken Breasts in the Oven stands apart from other BBQ chicken dishes primarily due to the method of cooking. While grilling is a common technique for BBQ chicken, oven-baking provides a more controlled environment, ensuring that the chicken stays moist while still getting a crispy, caramelized layer of BBQ sauce. The use of bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts in this recipe also helps maintain juiciness compared to boneless, skinless cuts. Furthermore, the choice of saucewhether tangy, sweet, or smokycan set it apart from other similar dishes like BBQ chicken wings or BBQ thighs.

Where is BBQ Chicken Typically Served?

BBQ Chicken is often served at family gatherings, picnics, and barbecues, making it a quintessential dish for casual and festive occasions. It's a crowd-pleaser, perfect for large groups and often paired with sides like coleslaw, cornbread, and baked beans. In addition, BBQ chicken is frequently featured on the menus of restaurants specializing in Southern or American cuisine. It's also a favorite at cookouts, where the sizzling sound of chicken on the grill adds to the excitement of outdoor dining.

Interesting Facts

Did you know that the first commercial barbecue sauce was created in the early 20th century? Companies like Sweet Baby Rays and Heinz revolutionized the way people enjoyed BBQ, making it accessible to everyone at home. BBQ chicken, specifically, has become a staple in American fast food chains, with many offering variations of the dish in their menus. Additionally, while grilling over charcoal is often thought of as the most traditional way to cook BBQ chicken, oven baking has gained popularity due to its convenience and ease of preparation. This method also reduces the risk of flare-ups that can burn the sauce and meat on a grill, ensuring more consistent results.

Conclusion

BBQ Chicken Breasts in the Oven is a fantastic, no-fuss meal that can be enjoyed by anyone, whether you're an experienced cook or a beginner in the kitchen. Its versatility, rich flavor, and simplicity make it a favorite for many. With just a few ingredients, you can create a satisfying dish that mimics the smoky and sweet flavors of outdoor BBQ without needing a grill. This dish represents a harmonious blend of history, regional flavor, and modern convenience, making it a perfect addition to any meal plan or celebration.

FAQ about BBQ Chicken Breasts in the Oven Recipe

Store leftover BBQ chicken breasts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, place the chicken in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes or until heated through. You can also microwave the chicken, but the skin may lose its crispiness.

Yes, you can use boneless chicken breasts, but they may turn out slightly drier compared to bone-in breasts. Be sure to adjust the cooking time, as boneless breasts usually cook faster.

You can check the internal temperature of the chicken with an instant-read thermometer. The chicken is fully cooked when the thermometer reads 165°F (74°C) near the bone. Additionally, you can do the 'poke test': when pierced with a knife or fork, the juices should run clear, not pink or cloudy.

Yes, you can freeze BBQ chicken breasts. Allow the chicken to cool completely, then store in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw the chicken in the refrigerator overnight and warm it up in the oven or microwave.

To add some heat, you can mix spicy BBQ sauce or add chili powder, cayenne pepper, or hot sauce to the marinade or sauce. You can also add sliced jalapeños or red pepper flakes on top of the chicken before baking.

BBQ chicken pairs well with a variety of sides. Some popular options include coleslaw, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, or a fresh green salad. For a complete meal, consider serving with a side of rice or baked beans.

Yes, you can grill the chicken instead of baking it. Preheat your grill to medium heat and cook the chicken for about 6-7 minutes per side, basting with BBQ sauce as you go. Keep an eye on the chicken to ensure it doesn't dry out or burn.

To avoid dry chicken breasts, make sure not to overcook them. Bone-in chicken breasts tend to stay juicier than boneless ones. Using a meat thermometer to check for doneness can help prevent overcooking. Also, marinating the chicken or using a BBQ sauce with enough moisture can help keep it tender.

Yes, feel free to use any BBQ sauce you prefer, whether store-bought or homemade. Some variations, like honey mustard or spicy chipotle BBQ sauce, can add different flavors to the dish.

Yes, you can prep the chicken breasts ahead of time. Season the chicken and store it covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. You can also assemble the dish fully and refrigerate it before cooking, just make sure to bake it within a day for the best results.

I have my own food blog and love, love to cook. I don't mind making all my ingredients from scratch most of the time. BUT, there are many nights when I really appreciate a recipe like this one when I need a quick delicious meal that I don't have to fuss over. I also love Sweet Baby Ray sauce. Please don't ruin anyone's love of cooking new things with your own negativity. Thanks for this simple and delicious recipe!

Yum!!! and obviously super easy!!! We brined first with garlic cloves, cayenne, bay leaves and baked with the garlic cloves on the chicken and used Rufus Teague BBQ. And balsamic bacon reduction sauteed asparagus.

best yet. I cooked boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Worked well. I sprinkled brown rice flour on the chicken to add what was not there (a skin that would provide a better bbq).

Thanks, Grumpy Grandpa. It was too windy to grill, so I needed guidance re: oven temp and timing. Your recipe was so helpful and tasty. I cut the large bone-in breasts in half with kitchen shears. I followed temperature guidance, but needed less time in oven. I used my favorite sauce. Would only add to check temp (165) with meat thermometer.

Easy and delicious! I sauteed two onions in olive oil and added them to the barbecue sauce. I used Sweet Baby Ray's Original Sauce. My family loved the chicken; there were NO leftovers! :)

This was certainly easy! As suggested, you will have to adjust the time based on the size of your chicken breasts. Mine were on the small-medium side, so I did 30 minutes total. I roasted the breasts initially for 10 minutes, then added the sauce and continued cooking for another 20. I didn't find any reason to add the sauce on twice. This will only be as good as the sauce you use, so use one you love! I used my homemade maple whiskey BBQ sauce. Next time I would grill the chicken, but this turned out pretty good for the oven.

I make this often; I don't put the s&p though, as I find it comes out too salty for our tastes, the the bbq sauce has a ton of flavour - I do pound the breasts and sprinkle with meat tenderizer and let it sit in the fridge, covered, for an hour if I have time. Always comes out tender and delicious. I usually boil some potatoes and steam some broccoli to go with. Easy and excellent!

TOO simple & easy. There was Nothing to it. I was hoping for something with a little more to it. Tip:Most recipes say that at 165-175 chicken is done. I have found this to be NOT TRUE many, many times! It usually is still very pink at 165, ruining a stomach cuz pink chicken to eat is Discussing! But I have found the easiest way to find out if it's done is the "Poke Test". Simply poke it with a knife or fork. If the juices come out even a little bit cloudy or pinkish, it's BOT done!! U want to poke it & have it drain out almost like water looks. Totally clear. Just a simple hint. Don't trust thermometers. Especially for chicken.

Boneless breasts are much better. Lightly flour them & pan fry in butter. Remove. Place on foil lined sheet pan and place in 300°F oven for 30 minutes. Baste with BBQ sauce 3 or 4 times. Juicy every time!
