Easy Boursin Chicken Pasta Recipe

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 (5.2 ounce) boxes shallot and chive flavored Gournay cheese (such as Boursin)
  • 1 pint grape tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 12 ounces pasta
  • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
  • 5 ounces baby spinach
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
  • 1 lemon, juiced (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F (200C). Place the Gournay cheese in the center of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Add the grape tomatoes and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle the crushed red pepper over the top.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the tomatoes begin to burst.
  3. While the tomatoes are baking, fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add the pasta and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 12 minutes, or until tender but firm to the bite. Refer to the package directions for precise cooking time.
  4. Before draining the pasta, reserve cup of the pasta cooking water and set it aside.
  5. Once the tomatoes are ready, stir the cooked pasta into the cheese and tomato mixture. Add the shredded chicken and spinach, and toss carefully until all ingredients are well combined and the cheese has melted into a creamy sauce.
  6. If desired, add the lemon zest and lemon juice for a fresh, zesty flavor, and toss the mixture again.
  7. If the sauce is too thick, gradually add some of the reserved pasta cooking water to reach your desired consistency.
  8. Serve immediately, and enjoy!

This easy-to-make pasta is perfect for those seeking a comforting yet quick dinner. But behind its creamy, cheesy goodness lies an interesting history, regional twists, and unique characteristics that make it stand out from other pasta dishes.

Origin and History of Boursin Cheese

Boursin cheese, the star ingredient in this dish, was created in the 1950s by French cheesemaker Franois Boursin. Originating in Normandy, France, Boursin cheese is a soft, creamy Gournay-style cheese blended with herbs and garlic. Its versatility made it a popular addition to various dishes, from spreads to sauces. Over time, it became a go-to ingredient in both French and international kitchens. The combination of its rich texture and herbaceous flavors brings a unique twist to traditional pasta dishes, making it an ideal pairing for the Easy Boursin Chicken Pasta recipe.

Regional Variations

The concept of using creamy cheese sauces in pasta dishes is not unique to this recipe. In Italy, creamy pasta dishes like Alfredo and Carbonara have long been staples. However, the use of Boursin cheese is more common in French-inspired cooking, especially in areas where soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert are prevalent. In this dish, the addition of tomatoes, spinach, and chicken not only brings it closer to a Mediterranean flavor profile but also incorporates ingredients commonly found in Italian cooking. This fusion of French cheese with Italian-style pasta creates a delightful cross-cultural experience on your plate.

How It Differs From Similar Dishes

What sets Easy Boursin Chicken Pasta apart from other creamy pasta dishes is the use of Boursin cheese. Unlike traditional Alfredo sauce, which relies on heavy cream and butter, Boursin adds a layer of fresh herb flavors, particularly chive and shallot, that elevate the dish without overwhelming it. Moreover, the inclusion of roasted tomatoes and spinach introduces a burst of color and freshness, providing a balance to the rich cheese sauce. While dishes like Chicken Alfredo or Pasta Primavera also combine chicken and pasta, the creamy Boursin cheese gives this dish a distinctive, tangy twist that makes it stand out.

Really liked this. Very different from our usual pasta dinners. My tomatoes took a bit more time to cook down but not a big deal. It was easy and used minimal ingredients.

Just tried this today... busy hockey mom who needed something fast. I bought all of the ingredients put it all in the oven (even spinach), made pasta, when cheese was melted, garlic soft. & tomatoes burst... I added in prepackaged Trader Joes chopped white meat chicken (only ingredients are chicken & salt), then removed garlic, squeezed out of the clove, added back to sauce with pasta & a little water. Divine. I also used 2 boursins & 1 pound of pasta.

I didn't use the lemon zest and I used tortellini pasta instead. I also included the chicken in the pan with the tomatoes and cheese in the oven for 20 minutes. It was delicious! I'm sure if I had followed the recipe exactly, it would have been great as well.

This was a delicious easy meal. I would compare it to a pasta dish you would get at a nice Italian restaurant. I did add peas instead of spinach because I forgot to get the spinach. I also added some pepper and omitted the lemon juice. I will definitely be making this again with the spinach. I also thought fresh sliced mushrooms might be good too.

I think this recipe needs a lot more than 15 mins in oven. 30 - 40 mins maybe. It makes a difference when you've promised dinner in 40 mins.
