Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin Recipe

Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin

History of the Dish:

The pork tenderloin is a classic cut of pork that has been enjoyed for centuries, particularly in European cuisine. Traditionally, tenderloin has been roasted or grilled, and it remains a popular choice for both casual and fine dining. In recent years, air fryers have gained immense popularity, offering a quick and healthy alternative to traditional methods of cooking. The Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin recipe combines the ease and speed of air frying with the tenderness of the pork tenderloin, creating a flavorful and moist dish in a fraction of the time compared to conventional roasting methods.

Regional Variations:

While the pork tenderloin itself is a versatile dish enjoyed around the world, different regions have their own unique twists on how its seasoned and served. In the United States, especially in the South, pork tenderloin is often seasoned with a spicy rub that includes chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and other aromatic herbs. This Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin recipe uses a similar rub but also includes smoked paprika, giving it a slightly smoky flavor that distinguishes it from other preparations. In contrast, other regions might incorporate ingredients like apples, mustard, or even honey to balance the porks savory flavor.

Distinction from Similar Dishes:

The Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin stands out from other pork-based dishes such as pork chops or roasted pork shoulder by its tenderness and the method of cooking. Unlike pork chops, which are typically cut from the rib or loin, the tenderloin is a lean and exceptionally tender cut of meat. The air fryer also sets this recipe apart by cooking the meat quickly while retaining moisture, resulting in a perfectly cooked piece of meat with a crisp, flavorful crust. Pork shoulder, on the other hand, often requires long, slow roasting to break down the tougher fibers, making it a different texture and flavor profile compared to the tenderloin.

Where It's Typically Served:

This dish is a great choice for both weeknight dinners and special occasions. In the U.S., its commonly served alongside vegetables like roasted potatoes, carrots, and green beans, or paired with starches like mashed potatoes or rice. Because of its quick cooking time, it also makes for a great dish to prepare when youre short on time but still want to serve a meal that feels special. Many home cooks love preparing pork tenderloin in the air fryer as it offers a hands-off cooking experience while delivering a perfectly cooked meat every time.

Fun Facts:

  • Pork tenderloin is often referred to as the "filet mignon of pork" because of its tenderness and mild flavor.
  • The air fryer, a modern kitchen appliance that circulates hot air to cook food quickly, was first introduced to the consumer market in 2010. Since then, it has revolutionized home cooking with its ability to cook foods with little to no oil.
  • In some regions, especially in the Midwest, the concept of "tenderloin sandwiches" has become a beloved dish, typically featuring a breaded and fried pork tenderloin patty, served on a bun with pickles and condiments.

Recipe Instructions:

1. Stir together chili powder, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, black pepper, and crushed red pepper in a small bowl until evenly combined.

2. Place pork on a cutting board and coat with olive oil; rub spice mix over the entire tenderloin until evenly coated.

3. Lightly coat air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place tenderloin in basket at a diagonal angle so it lays flat and straight.

4. Cook at 400F (200C) for 5 minutes. Reduce temperature to 325F (165C) and continue cooking until internal temperature reaches 140F (60C), about 12 to 15 minutes.

5. Remove from basket and let stand for 5 minutes, allowing the temperature to rise to 145F (63C).

6. Slice into -inch pieces and drizzle with honey before serving.

FAQ about Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin Recipe

Store leftover air fryer pork tenderloin in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, place it back in the air fryer for a few minutes at 350°F (175°C) until heated through, or reheat in the microwave. For best results, slice the pork before reheating to maintain tenderness.

Yes, you can freeze air fryer pork tenderloin. Allow the pork to cool completely before placing it in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm it in the air fryer or oven.

To make the recipe less spicy, you can reduce or omit the crushed red pepper and chili powder in the seasoning mix. You can also substitute with a milder paprika or a pinch of cumin for flavor without the heat.

Yes, you can substitute pork tenderloin with chicken breast, turkey tenderloin, or even beef sirloin. Adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness and type of meat. Always check the internal temperature to ensure proper doneness.

Very tasty rub! Do not use too much seasoning. Light coating is quite sufficient.

Whoa. Amanda! This is wow-oh-wow good!! And so quick and easy!! I only had a 1.25 lb tenderloin….so, I had a touch more seasoning than I needed. In my Ninja 11-in-1, this took 21 min at 325 to get to internal temp. So tender! Such great flavor! Wow! A new favorite - including in method! I would absolutely make again! Thanks so much Amanda! This was top notch!

My wife and I loved this and was the first thing made in our new air fryer. I omitted the honey but added brown sugar and ground, dried rosemary to the spice blend. Will make again for sure.

Sweet and spicy YUM!!! I had no Chili powder, so I used blackening spice. Came out fine. Had to cook for a bit longer though.

The only change I made was to add about 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the rub and lose the honey, per another's suggestion. My husband does not like pork chops, but loved this pork tenderloin. (He thinks I worked hard over the meal, and I'm not going to say differently.) I roasted potatoes, carrots and onions, had fresh celery and applesauce to round out the meal.

A real tasty recipe and easy to do. We substituted brown sugar for the honey in the rub. We will definitely do this again.

I used a tsp of regular paprika and .5 of smoked. The smoked for me is usually too much. Tasty and tender! Quick and easy w/spices already in my cabinet.

I use this recipe for all my pork tenderloin. I use my own spices or a flavored one from the store. Made a bacon wrapped one and it was delicious.

Really good. I've made this twice. You don't need as much salt, and I've never done the honey, but I really do like something with a lot of seasoning.

Way too much seasoning for my family as we prefer salt, pepper, and garlic salt, but the preparation was easy peasy! Hands down delicious, and it makes a great weeknight meal, with a salad and a vegetable. Season however you prefer! This is a keeper!

I never thought of cooking a pork tenderloin in the air fryer, but it worked very well. The rub recipe has a little heat, but very good.

It was nowhere near done using the temperature and time shown in this recipe. I used the precise temperature and 5” @ 400 degrees with another 15” at 325. Still oinking when I opened the air fryer.

We tried two different recipes and taste tested both. This was the clear winner! I didn't have paprika and don't like honey so omitted both. I only had minced onion and used that. I cooked it in the air fryer exactly as instructed and it came out perfectly! So tender.

My husband and I loved it. I'm fixing it for the second time today. I also reserve some of the seasoning mix and I sprinkle it on almost everything. It's so good

I used my own seasonings but needed time/temp settings when my oven died and had to figure out how to cook a tenderloin in the air fryer at the last minute. WOW the cooking instructions made for a perfectly juicy piece of meat with a good crust on the outside. Thanks for saving dinner!
