This is a very flavorful spaghetti casserole as is, but I suggest that the cooked beef/sausage mixture be drained of the grease before stirring in the 3 cups of the marinara sauce. Also breaking the spaghetti into either 1/3 rds or 1/4's before cooking will make for an easier serving of the finished dish. And lastly, adding a lightly beaten egg, and about 1/3rd to 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese to the cooked and drained pasta along with the 3 1/2 Tbs of the softened butter and the remaining marinara sauce will add body and wonderful flavor to the cooked pasta.

This dish did not disappoint, and I am not a big fan of spaghetti, however my husband is. It was delicious! I used ricotta in place of cottage cheese because I had some on hand, and I only used a pound of Italian sausage, because I missed the sirloin when I glanced at the recipe before purchasing the needed ingredients.

I've made this for years, but I omit cream cheese, sour cream, butter, and cottage cheese. I just use grated parm in the mix, and mozzarella on top. It works well with pretty much any kind of meat. I've used sausage that was still cased and cut it up after cooking, boneless/skinless and breaded chicken, meatballs (cut into quarters), pulled pork (with no bbq sauce), and pepperoni. It's great when you have leftover meat and don't know what to do with it.

I have 2 men with hearty appetites in my household they both enjoyed. I followed the recipe except for 1 thing. I added a slightly beaten egg to the cheese mixture to make it a little more creamy. It was delicious and was enough to feed 3 of us for dinner for 2 nights plus lunch. Great recipe for dinner party or pot luck ,because you can fix it ahead of time and it will bake while you are spending time with your guests.
