This recipe is easy to make and very versatile. It always gets lots of compliments when served in a trifle bowl. If you take this dessert to a potluck, don't expect any leftovers! They will lick the bowl clean. Now for the changes... I use 2 pounds of strawberries. I fold about 2/3 of them into the glaze and use the remainder to garnish the top. Storebought glaze is a great timesaver, but I make my own when I have time. There are many different ways to make glaze. Most often, I use a 3 oz. box of strawberry gelatin, 4 to 5 tablespoons of cornstarch, a cup of sugar, and 2 cups of boiling water. Cook until thickened and let cool and you're ready to go! I use the larger, 12 oz container of whipped topping. I only used one 8-oz package of cream cheese the first time around because I only had one on hand. It turned out fine, so I've never added more than 8 oz of cream cheese. I also sweeten the whipped topping to taste, as a cup of sugar seem like too much for my family's taste. I have always used storebought angel food cake but I'd like to try it with white cake from a mix. My favorite thing about this recipe is that it is so versatile. Blueberries, raspberries, and peaches would be great with the appropriate glazes. A blueberry/strawberry combo would be great for the 4th of July!

I made this once for an office potluck, and now am asked to bring it every time (sigh…). I followed the suggestions of other reviewers by decreasing the sugar to 3/4 cup. Also, made my own glaze with the following ingredients: cook 5 minutes 1 qt. Sliced berries, 1 cup sugar, 3 Tb cornstarch, and 1 Tb lime juice, add a little orange juice if glaze is too thick. Please note, the quart of strawberries used for the glaze is separate from the quart used for the topping. Once the glaze was prepared and had cooled, I stirred in the other quart of sliced fresh strawberries. Many compliments of how great tasting the fresh strawberries were, and quite a few comparisons to really good strawberry shortcake. Once strawberry season had passed, I made this recipe with only frozen berries. It still tasted good, but lacked the beautiful bright red color and texture of fresh strawberries. I’ve made this with angel food cake, with pound cake, and with yellow cake. I prefer the yellow cake. Next time, I plan to divide the yellow cake batter between a 9 x 13 inch pan and an 8 inch square pan, so that there is enough room in the pans to layer on the toppings without crumbling up the cake. It will look better when served. The crumbled cake was a little messy.

Superb! Added 1 tsp of vanilla to the cream cheese/whipped topping. Fresh blueberries layered on the top for a little something extra and served in a trifle bowl for a beautiful presentation! Loved this recipe!

I changed the recipe a LOT. First off, I decided to do multiple layers and make a trifle. I made homemade sponge cake and that went bottom. Then the cool whip/cream cheese/sugar mix (I decreased sugar to 3/4 cup). then sliced bananas. Then vanilla pudding (boxed mix that used three cups milk). Then strawberry glaze, which I homemade (2 cups cut up strawberries, 1 cup was fresh and one cup frozen, 1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons cornstarch, juice of 1 lime, cooked on medium heat around 8 minutes. Did before preparing everything else and put in fridge to cool down. Once cool I mixed in 2 cups fresh cut up strawberries). Then a layer of blueberries. Then repeat layers starting at sponge cake. Super good and a total hit at the potluck I went to. But that's with the pile of changes I made. with the changes, 5 stars. Without, there's too much sugar and store bought glaze is gross. 3 stars.

Not quite as quick as the times suggests (slicing the strawberries took awhile), but a definite crowd pleaser!!! If not eating right away, I'd wait to combine/add the strawberries and the glaze (I used Smuckers strawberry topping) until nearly ready, or it gets soupy, especially if traveling to a BBQ. *I also listened to others and used only 1 cream cheese, cut back on the sugar to 1/2 cup, and added 1 tsp of vanilla. I also made a "nest" of extra Cool Whip on the top and added a good cup or so of blueberries. It didn't last long!!

I've been making this for years! The only change I make is I omit the glaze and usually add at least another half or sometimes double the strawberries. I dice the strawberries ahead of time then add up to a 1/4 cup sugar to them and let them sit in the refrigerator until I'm ready to assemble the whole cake. It makes the cake taste so fresh! Everything I make this people ask for the recipe!

So… this recipe is golden. It’s delicious, cheap to make… I’m happy with my results. I used half a cup light brown sugar and half cup white sugar (rather than a whole cup sugar) and I also used Smuckers Strawberry topping (for ice cream) as I couldn’t find glaze literally anywhere. It came out fantastic! Blessed baking y’all!

I brought this dessert to my knitting group and everybody loved it. I did change a few things, because I did not have all the ingredients. First I made the Angel Food Cake from the box mix, it was really easy and really good and much cheaper than store bought. Second, I did not have strawberry glaze so I just cut up my quart of strawberries and sprinkled about a 1/4 cup of sugar on them and let them sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, next I added a half pint of homemade strawberry jam that I had in the pantry. I warmed the jam and strawberries on the stove so the two would meld then put that on the top of the torn up cake pieces. I then did the cream cheese mix but only used 3/4 cup sugar. I layered that on top of the strawberries and then used strawberries and blueberries to decorate. It was a hit! Good summer dessert.

Big hit at 4th in trifle bowl. Baked store bought cake mix in 2 loaf pans and cooled on side. Make glaze with quart of strawberries, 1 cup sugar, 3TBSP cornstarch, 1TBSP lime juice, and 1/3 cup water. Layered with an additional quart of fresh strawberries and big container of blueberries.

This recipe was such a tasty blessing to find in the nick of time for a church event. Thank you so much! After perusing some of the suggestions, I also changed just a few things to great success: 1. I used strawberry pie filling instead of glaze with the fresh strawberries. 2. I used 1/2 c. powdered sugar instead of 1 c. granulated, added more vanilla and a "blob" of sour cream to the cream cheese mixture before folding in whipped topping. 3. I used a Danish butter cake for the bottom layer. You know it's a great recipe when it works so well, even with some slight variations on the theme. Well done.

Wonderful dessert. Made it with my own homemade cake recipe and frozen strawberries. Used 3/4 for the glaze, cooked it first then purée using immersion blender, then added rest of the strawberries and turned off.

I served it in a trifle dish and it was beautiful. It was a hit at my neighborhood pot luck; they told me I raised the bar way too high with the elegant looking dessert. :-)

I substituted Stevia for the sugar. I used sugar free strawberry glaze. My friends and family loved it.

I followed the other suggestions, cutting the sugar to 3/4 cup and I made the glaze that someone else posted.
