This homemade puppy chow recipe is easy and fun to make for all ages! Plus, it makes a great edible gift.

How to Make Puppy Chow

You'll find a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions in the recipe below, but let's go over the basics:

What Is Puppy Chow?

"Puppy chow" (a.k.a. muddy buddies) is the name for a homemade candy or snack that's made with cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. General Mills sells their own version of the popular treat, but it's easy to make at home with just a few ingredients.

Puppy Chow Ingredients

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (or almond butter)
  • 9 cups crispy rice cereal squares
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar (powdered sugar)

How to Make Homemade Puppy Chow

  1. Step 1: Melt the chocolate. In a saucepan, heat the chocolate chips over low heat, stirring constantly until they melt and become smooth.
  2. Step 2: Stir in peanut butter. Once the chocolate is smooth, add the peanut butter and continue stirring until fully combined.
  3. Step 3: Add cereal. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the rice cereal squares. Stir gently to coat the cereal evenly with the chocolate-peanut butter mixture.
  4. Step 4: Coat with powdered sugar. Pour the confectioners' sugar into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the coated cereal and seal the bag. Shake it well to coat the cereal with powdered sugar.
  5. Step 5: Store. Once the puppy chow is fully coated, pour it onto a baking sheet or large plate to cool. Store it in an airtight at room temperature or in the fridge.

How to Store Puppy Chow

Store homemade puppy chow in an airtight for up to three days at room temperature, or up to one week in the refrigerator.

Cute story to tell... I had a gathering and offered some Puppy Chow to 4 yr-old Anthony. He asked what was in it. I told him it was Chex cereal that had melted chocolate and peanut butter poured on it. Then it was tossed in powdered sugar. He says "Oh no... I couldn't possibly eat that." Thinking he was allergic to something I kind of freaked and asked why not. He put his little hand to his chest, took a step backwards and said "Because it sounds too delicious." FOUR YEARS OLD! Needless to say, I had to give the kid a hug. Anthony proceeded to gobble it up and even took a doggy bag (which he thought was hilarious) home for his brother.

I reduced the amount of cereal to 8 cups, and added 1/4 cup butter and 1 tsp of vanilla to it. I cooled it slightly in the fridge before tossing with the powdered sugar so it doesn't absorb it so much...coats better with less. This is soooo adictive. I can't make it unless I know there are people here to help me eat it or it's gone before I know it! ****Here's a tip, line your measuring cup with saran wrap before mesauring the peanut butter. It will slide right out with no messy clean up! I do this for all sticky ingredients (shortening, honey, pb, corn syrup) Works great!***

I love this recipe. The only thing that I would add is that you can microwave the chocolate peanut butter mixture instead of heating on the stove. It makes it much easier. Just microwave for a minute, stir, then microwave for 30 seconds. It works great. Remember to use a microwave safe bowl. Love the recipe. Great snack for kids sleepovers and snacks at lunch.

This recipe is fantastic! It's the perfect sweet-n-salty, crunchy snack. I've played around with the recipe in past years & recommend: use 1 stick of real butter (helps to thin out the chocolate & peanut butter & makes the mix a little more rich), I use 1 full cup of PB! I tested Peter Pan Crunchy & Jiff Crunchy peanut butter. Both are softer butters than Natural peanut butter, therefore to me, makes the mixture easier to work with. I use Hershey's chips. Tried another brand & wasn't the same. I omitted the vanilla because you can't taste it & to me is a waste of vanilla. I used a jumbo freezer bag to shake then poured into a colander to shake off excess sugar. Lastly, I put the mix into freezer bags and placed in the freezer. Night & day difference in taste! So i always keep in the freezer. It's a wonderful cold, sweetncrunchy treat!

This is a family favorite recipe that I make every Christmas. My kids are now in their late teens and early 20's and demand it. The recipe itself is very simple to follow. I do melt my chocolate chips in a large bowl for 30 second increments until melted, then add peanut butter and cereal. Using Peanut Butter Chex makes this even better. Next instead of a large ziploc because you really need a 2 gallon bag to mix appropriately or mix in batches I layer powdered sugar and cereal mixture in a large tupperware container, close and shake.

Like other reviewers, I added 1/4 cup of butter, some vanilla, and a little extra chocolate. I did use the entire box of cereal and it coated the pieces a bit better than I was expecting based off other reviews. Next time I will make more of the chocolate mixture for more even coverage. I tried to mix everything on a cookie sheet (don't have plastic bags) and it worked okay for the chocolate, but not for the powdered sugar. I ended up dumping everything in a paper grocery bag as suggested and that worked great.

Note - all ingredients can be approximated. Also any type of chocolate chips work fine. Using my largest LeCruset pot, I can easily made a double or triple recipe. Add 1/2 stick butter per batch. A large box of chex cereal makes 2 recipes. A 16 oz jar of peanut butter will make 3 - 4 batches. Again, I estimated amounts. When putting powdered sugar into the gallon zip bag, only add half and then put the rest on top of the cereal after mixing some. No need to measure powdered sugar. Just pour some in the bottom, then later add some in on top and keep mixing.

This is usually a really good snack....but unless you only want half of your cereal to get coated With chocolate, you either have to use half the amount of cereal or double the amount of chocolate and pb. You may want to add a bit of butter and vanilla while melting the choc/pb to make it run smoother over the cereal. Don’t overheat your chocolate or it will get clumpy and hard to manage. I use a plastic or paper bag to put the cereal in and shake with powdered sugar so it’s easily and evenly coated

I used the exact amounts of chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter and it coated 9 cups really thick. I added the rest of the box into which was almost 3 more cups and it gave it a nice chocolate coating. I then put powdered sugar into gallon zip lock bag, shook and added more. I divided it into about 3 batches to coat. Then spread it out on parchment paper to let cool. Then I put the batch in a colander bowl and gently stirred to get rid of the loose powdered sugar. Beautiful dish. Toss in a red and green chocolate candy and it makes a beautiful candy dish.

Very good! Used whole box cereal which was 12 cups and increased chocolate (about 1/2 cup more) and peanut butter (about 1/4 cup more) to compensate. Heated the chips in microwave about 30 seconds at a time and stir before adding more time. Pour mixture over some of the cereal in huge bowl then keep layering cereal over more chocolate to help with mixing. To keep from smashing too much cereal, toss the mixture together by shaking the bowl rather than stirring it. Allow the mixture to cool and stiffen before adding powdered sugar so the sugar doesn't absorb too quickly. Shake bowl again to cover the the cereal rather than stirring.

Super easy, can't believe what they charge for this stuff in the grocery store! One recipe made 15 ziploc bags with 3/4 C. in each. Great idea for a team snack!

I use milk chocolate chips instead of semi sweet and it seem to work OK. I will add a little butter next time to melt the chocolate. I will also cool down the mix a little more before adding the powdered sugar.

I melted the chocolate chips in the microwave and then added the peanut butter until all was melted together. I put the cereal in a huge round Tupperware cake taker and poured the chocolate mixture over. After mixing it up, I just added the powdered sugar to the mixture, put the lid on, and shook rather than using a plastic bag. I did add a little more powdered sugar than what was called for. This used an entire 12 oz box of cereal. A great holiday snack but also a perfect nibble to take as a gift for someone who no longer cooks.

Be sure if your kiddos are taking this to class for show and tell or some school activity that EVERYONE know there is peanut butter in the mix. We had a kerfuffle and no one was seriously hurt. Luck was on our side. For those fortunate enough NOT to have an allergy problem, it is a delicious treat. '' Sadly, this treat is NOT for everyone.
