I absolutely love this recipe, it's almost identical to the one I've been using for years. I had to leave my feedback because it's my favorite way to use up extra apples – typically around 7 of various types (minus the ones I snack on while preparing it). Here are the tweaks I make: 1) I swap half the white sugar with brown sugar for the apple mixture. 2) I include freshly ground nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sometimes add raisins. 3) I skip the water. 4) I never forget to add a generous spoonful of gourmet butterscotch caramel ice cream topping – trust me, it's a game-changer! Initially, I struggled with the crumble being too crumbly until I learned to lightly press it into the bowl, chill it for at least 30 minutes, and then break it up with a fork. Allowing the butter to re-solidify in the mixture really improves the final crumble texture. Using real butter is crucial; margarine won't yield the same results. I often prepare this in advance and store it in the fridge, then just before dinner, I break up the crumble, sprinkle it on top, and bake while we eat. I always serve it with vanilla bean ice cream, and the feedback I've received has always been fantastic.

I shared this recipe a few years back, back when I wasn't even a registered member. It made it into All Recipes' first cookbook, and I felt so thrilled about it. Every now and then, I revisit it to check out some reviews. I suggest using Granny Smith apples for the best result – it won't turn out too sweet or watery. Big thanks to all the cooks out there for sharing your ratings and reviews!

Outstanding Recipe! Following the steps precisely is key (like not mixing all the ingredients at once) - this is not your typical crisp recipe where you can improvise. The outcome was fantastic. I didn't find the water amount to be problematic; it created a lovely thick juice that enhanced the dish beautifully. A heads up for anyone making this or any apple crisp recipe: the type of apples you use really makes a difference. I tried it with Red Delicious apples initially, and although the recipe itself was good, the apples were lacking in flavor and texture. Switching to Granny Smith green sour apples completely transformed the dish! Be brave and opt for sour apples - with the two cups of sugar, it balances out the sweetness perfectly. You want a crisp and tangy apple to contrast the sugar and elevate the flavor profile. Avoid using soft or tasteless apples, as they will become mushy if overcooked. If concerned about overcooking, slice the apples thicker. For thin apple slices, select a firm, fresh, tart apple. I recommend steering clear of Red Delicious apples. I also sprinkled in a bit of nutmeg for an added touch.

Absolutely delicious! I made sure to follow the recipe instructions to a tee this time, but next time I plan to tweak it a bit: halve the water, double the topping, and sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Also, I recommend extending the cooking time as mine wasn't fully done in 45 minutes. Nevertheless, it's a fantastic recipe!

A crucial tip: Don't add water! I omitted it completely and the result was flawless. I downsized the recipe to fit an 8x8 square pan. I reduced the sugar for the apples by half but kept the topping measurements the same. For the original 9x13 size, remember to double the topping ingredients, or it won't be sufficient. This apple crisp is hands down the most delicious I've ever had, and it's incredibly simple to whip up!

Here is a revised version of your review: "I'm sharing my personal touch and adjustments in this review, after losing them due to the discontinuation of the dinner spinner app. I hope others can find them useful too! I usually opt for a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples, with minimal or no water added in step 3, just a light sprinkle at most. Occasionally, I like to incorporate a dash of nutmeg along with the cinnamon, depending on my mood. I also double the amount of crumble topping for an extra indulgent treat. With the increased crumble, I find a deep 9x13 pan works best... Simply delicious!"

This dessert is absolutely delicious! After reading a few reviews, I decided to make some adjustments. My family absolutely adored it! Here are the changes I made: 1. I soaked the Granny Smith apples in lemon juice and water while I was peeling and preparing them. 2. I incorporated 1 teaspoon of nutmeg into the sugar, flour, and cinnamon apple topping. 3. Instead of adding extra water, I used 2 teaspoons of vanilla over the apples. 4. To enhance the texture and provide more coverage on top of the apples, I mixed in a cup of rolled oats with the quick oats. 5. I used Kerry Gold butter in the recipe, and it was simply divine! YUM!

I opted for granny smith apples and substituted water with 1 1/2 tsp of lemon juice. To enhance the flavor, I combined the apples with half the amount of sugar, cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice. The end result was fantastic!

I absolutely adore this recipe! It has become my all-time favorite, and I use it without fail every time. Following the advice of many, I double the topping and reduce the water to about 1/4 of the recommended amount. I prefer to use Granny Smith apples, usually around 8-10 of them. I prepare them by placing them in a container with water, sugar, cinnamon, and flour. After shaking everything well, I transfer the apples to the pan so that they are completely coated before adding the topping (sometimes I even sprinkle some on the bottom for an extra touch of flavor). This dessert is my husband's ultimate favorite, regardless of the season - simply the best!

I have made numerous apple crisps throughout the years, rarely following the same recipe twice. However, this one stands out as truly excellent. I adjusted the quantities to suit an 8x8 dish and opted for peeled Liberty apples, cut into chunky pieces for their delightful tartness and crisp texture. Instead of melting the butter, I incorporated very soft butter into the dry topping ingredients, resulting in a wonderfully chunky baked topping that I absolutely loved. The apples maintained their firmness after baking, and the topping was just perfect. This recipe is definitely a keeper, requiring only minimal modifications to suit personal tastes.

Delicious recipe, but I have some suggestions for improvement. In my next attempt, I will reduce the amount of white sugar to 1/2 cup. I also included lemon to prevent the apples from browning and incorporated some juice into the recipe. Instead of applying a crumb coat on top of the apples, I plan to lay them out on a cookie sheet and bake at 250 degrees until they turn crispy. Once cooled, I will store them in an airtight container and sprinkle them on each serving as a topping.

Excellent apple crisp recipe! I made some modifications by skipping the water, adding extra cinnamon, and increasing the amount of topping ingredients. I only had 6 Fuji Apples on hand but baked it for 58 minutes. The result was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be making it again.

Amazing apple crisp! The only challenging part is prepping the apples, but it's totally worth it in the end. I may have accidentally used 16 cups of apples, but it turned out perfectly delicious!

I mistakenly purchased traditional oats instead of quick-cook oats, but I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious the topping turned out. When I realized it was getting too dark, I quickly covered it with foil and baked it for an additional 10 minutes to ensure the apples would be soft and absorb the cinnamon-sugar mixture perfectly. This little trick worked like a charm, and I have been enjoying this dish non-stop, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I still have plenty of apples left from my orchard pickings, so I might make this again but with quick-cook oats next time to see how it changes the flavor.

I increased the amount of cinnamon significantly because we enjoy a strong cinnamon flavor. I also sprinkled cinnamon in the topping. Overall, it turned out really delicious. However, please note that my dish took an hour to cook instead of the recommended 45 minutes.
