Colombian Arepas Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup pre-cooked white cornmeal (such as P.A.N.)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter
- teaspoon salt, or to taste
- Cooking spray
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, cornmeal, shredded mozzarella cheese, butter, and salt. Mix everything together until fully combined and a soft dough forms.
- Once the dough is ready, divide it into balls the size of a medium orange.
- Place each dough ball between two sheets of plastic wrap and use a rolling pin to flatten each one to your desired thickness.
- With the plastic wrap still in place, use the edge of a cereal bowl or drinking glass to press into the dough, cutting out perfect circles.
- Remove the plastic wrap and discard any excess dough scraps.
- Spray a griddle or large frying pan with cooking spray and heat it over medium-high heat.
- Working in batches, cook the arepas on the hot griddle until they are golden brown, about 5 minutes per side.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Recipe Tip
If the dough feels too dry, add a little extra water. If it's too moist, sprinkle in some more cornmeal until you reach the right consistency.

The plastic sheets, rolling pin, and glass are all superfluous to making arepas. Whoever wrote this has NEVER been in a Colombian kitchen. Just pinch a small ball size of dough, roll it in your hand and smash it out, just like you would with a burger. Done!

I really liked these. I halved recipe and used shredded cheddar instead of mozzarella, because that is what I had. I made breakfast sandwiches with these and they were a nice change from bread.

Turned out great. My daughter’s partner from Columbia said they tasted authentic. Used a cast iron skillet on med low with avocado oil, Tex mex cheese brought some extra delicious flavour.

This was kind of hard for me to make they didn't come out like the pictures or any arepas I've had before. What's the trick to making them more than a corn pancake? Following the ingredients amount things seemed too wet so I added more cornmeal but maybe I ended up adding too much?

Hard to make for me even though it should be simple. I didn’t like the taste because salt was the only flavor.

Another reviewer mentioned using more butter. I cooked mine in a cast iron skillet and used butter instead of oil, to make about 1/8 inch of butter in the pan heat the butter until it starts to sizzle and bubble. They don't get as brown and crispy as oil but they do taste more buttery.
