Cook Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, divided
  • 12 slices French or Italian-style bread
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon salt
  • Caramel Sauce:
    • cup brown sugar
    • cup unsalted butter
    • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup

Directions

Step 1: In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup brown sugar, cup butter, and 2 tablespoons corn syrup. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.

Step 2: Pour the thickened sauce into a 9x13-inch baking dish, then sprinkle with cup of chopped pecans.

Step 3: Layer 6 slices of bread over the sauce, followed by the remaining pecans. Top with the remaining 6 slices of bread.

Step 4: In a blender, combine eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and salt. Blend until smooth, then pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices.

Step 5: Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight.

Step 6: Remove the dish from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.

Step 7: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C). Bake the French toast in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until it is lightly browned.

Step 8: While the French toast is baking, prepare the caramel sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the remaining cup brown sugar, cup butter, and 1 tablespoon corn syrup. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.

Step 9: Drizzle the caramel sauce over the baked French toast just before serving.

I was quite apprehensive after reading some of the other reviews that this dish would be overly sweet and mushy. I decided to reduce the number of eggs and used one cup of milk instead, and it was a fantastic decision! To my surprise, my roommate remarked that it was the best French toast she had ever tasted. While it was indeed sweet, I wouldn't describe it as excessively so. In fact, it was simply delicious; I ended up indulging in quite a lot of it!

This recipe is a winner! I used 5 eggs and 1 cup of half-and-half. I opted for a single layer using raisin cinnamon bread. I lined the baking dish with non-stick foil, making it easy to lift out and flip onto the serving dish. No mess to clean up! The hot caramel sauce from the bottom now becomes a delicious topping. No need for extra sauce. Everyone absolutely adored this dish.

This recipe is amazing - my family absolutely adores it! My suggestion is to skip using whole slices of bread and instead shred all 12 slices into chunks, then sprinkle them on top of the caramel base layer. We also prefer using Pepperidge Farm Cinnamon Raisin bread over plain French bread.

This breakfast casserole recipe was a hit! After reviewing several tips, I made some adjustments that turned out great. I skipped the extra caramel sauce, as the amount provided was sufficient. Using just one layer of bread and the bottom caramel layer worked perfectly. I sliced a thick loaf of French bread, using 6 slices in my 9 x 13 pan. I reduced the number of eggs to 5, opted for 1 cup of half-and-half instead of milk, and added 1/2 tsp each of nutmeg and cinnamon, which gave it just the right flavor. I sprinkled 1/2 cup of pecans (equivalent to one small baking package) on the bottom caramel layer before adding the bread. Once baked, I flipped the dish onto a serving platter and it looked stunning. A delicious and visually appealing dish!

This has become our favorite Christmas morning breakfast tradition. It's incredibly tasty and incredibly simple to make. I prepare the sauces using the microwave, which only takes about five minutes. Since there are just three of us, I use only six slices of Texas Toast (thick white bread). This quantity is perfect for enjoying on Christmas morning and even on Boxing Day!

My friend prepared this delightful dessert for our Bible study group, and it was absolutely scrumptious! I asked for the recipe and I'm excited to recreate it for my family. 😊🍰

I have included this dish in our Easter Brunch tradition for many years, and it has become a beloved favorite in our family. One important tip I would like to share is to avoid overcooking the caramel sauce in the saucepan. If you follow the recipe's cooking time exactly, the caramel may become too hard once the dish is baked in the oven, making it difficult to enjoy. Furthermore, I prefer using a single layer of bread in two pans instead of a double layer. If you opt for this method, consider doubling the amount of caramel for a richer flavor.

I made this amazing dish using a base of crusty French bread, layered with crescent dough, topped with shredded cheese and cooked sausage crumbles. The result was absolutely delicious - wow!

I've made this dish twice for office events and it was a hit both times! There wasn't a single bite left. The first time I prepared it, I added thinly sliced apples, which was tasty, but I actually preferred it without the apples.

I have been preparing this dish for years! I actually enjoy the slight sogginess of it. Instead of pouring the egg mixture over the bread, I prefer to dip each slice into the egg mixture, similar to how you would make traditional French toast. Then, I arrange them in a unique standing/leaning row in the pan, pour over any remaining egg, and proceed with the rest of the steps. I also like to serve it by turning it out upside down.

I absolutely adored this recipe! I opted for cinnamon apple fritter bread, and it turned out incredibly gooey and delicious. A definite crowd-pleaser. I ended up cooking it for 5 minutes less than the suggested time, and it was perfection.
