  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 slices multigrain bread
  • 1 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (or to taste)
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • Sea salt to taste

  4. While the eggs are cooking, toast the slices of bread for 3-5 minutes, or until they reach your desired level of crispness.
  5. In a bowl, mash the avocado and mix in the lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and sea salt to taste.
  6. Spread the mashed avocado mixture onto the toasted bread slices.
  7. Place the cooked eggs on top of the avocado toast and season with sea salt and ground black pepper as desired.

Avocado Toast with Egg has become a global breakfast sensation, and its rise to fame is no coincidence. This combination of creamy avocado spread on crisp toasted bread, topped with a perfectly fried egg, offers a delightful blend of flavors and textures. Whether enjoyed as a quick snack or a hearty breakfast, this dish is versatile, satisfying, and healthy. But where did it come from, and what makes it stand out from other similar dishes?

History of Avocado Toast with Egg

Avocado toast as we know it today gained massive popularity in the early 2010s, especially in the United States and Australia. Avocados, native to Central and South America, were long prized for their creamy texture and health benefits. However, the concept of spreading avocado on toast, a simple yet innovative idea, gained traction as people sought healthier alternatives to more traditional breakfast foods. The addition of eggs, particularly fried eggs, enhances the dishs nutritional value by adding protein and richness. While it's unclear exactly when the egg was added to the mix, it undoubtedly elevated the dish to an entirely new level of deliciousness.

Regional Differences

Avocado toast has slight variations depending on the region. In Australia, where avocado toast is considered a caf staple, it is often served with a poached egg, fresh herbs like coriander (cilantro), and sometimes a sprinkle of feta cheese. In the U.S., avocado toast is commonly topped with a fried egg, and many people add extra toppings such as bacon, tomatoes, or hot sauce for a more personalized experience. In some Latin American countries, avocado toast might include a dash of lime or chili powder for a bolder flavor profile. The flexibility of this dish allows for numerous regional adaptations based on available ingredients and local tastes.

How It Differs from Similar Dishes

While similar dishes like "eggs on toast" or "avocado sandwiches" exist, the key difference lies in the specific pairing of avocado with egg. The creamy, slightly earthy flavor of avocado complements the rich, savory taste of a fried or poached egg in a way that other toppings dont quite achieve. Eggs on toast, for instance, are usually served without avocado and often rely on butter or other spreads, which lack the healthy fats and fiber that avocado provides. The combination of the two ingredients not only enhances the flavor but also packs in more nutrients, making it a more filling and balanced meal.

Where It's Usually Served

Avocado toast with egg is widely served in cafs, brunch spots, and restaurants around the world, particularly in urban areas where trendy, health-conscious dining is popular. It is commonly found on breakfast menus but has also become a sought-after choice for lunch or even dinner. Many upscale brunch spots offer it with gourmet twists, such as adding smoked salmon, a drizzle of balsamic glaze, or a sprinkle of seeds for added crunch. Its simplicity and versatility make it an easy dish to serve at home as well, and it has become a favorite for those looking for a quick, nutritious, and customizable meal.

FAQ about Avocado Toast with Egg Recipe

Leftover avocado toast should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. However, the texture and flavor may change, especially the avocado, which can brown over time. To maintain freshness, it's best to store the egg separately from the toast and avocado. You can also wrap the toast in plastic wrap or foil to minimize exposure to air.

While avocado toast is best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare some components in advance. For instance, you can mash the avocado with lemon juice and seasonings ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. However, the fried egg and toast should be made just before serving to ensure the best texture.

You can substitute the butter with olive oil, avocado oil, or any other cooking oil of your choice. For a dairy-free version, coconut oil works well too. These substitutes can give the eggs a slightly different flavor but still result in a delicious dish.

To prevent the avocado from browning, you can add lemon juice or lime juice to the mashed avocado, as the citric acid helps slow down oxidation. Additionally, store the mashed avocado in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface to limit exposure to air.

Yes, you can use a variety of bread types based on your preference. Multigrain bread is commonly used for its nutritional value, but sourdough, whole wheat, or rye bread can also work well. If you're looking for a gluten-free option, you can use gluten-free bread.

There are many ways to customize avocado toast with egg! You can add toppings like sliced tomatoes, pickled onions, or cheese (such as feta or pepperjack). You can also try different spices like paprika, cumin, or chili flakes for a kick. If you prefer a poached egg instead of a fried egg, that’s also a great variation.

Yes, this recipe can be made vegan by omitting the egg and using a plant-based butter alternative. You can also add vegan cheese or a vegan egg substitute if desired.

The avocado toast should ideally be eaten within a few hours of making it for the best flavor and texture. If stored in the refrigerator, the components will last for up to 1-2 days, though the avocado will likely brown and the toast will become soggy. It's recommended to store the components separately and assemble the toast just before eating.

Yes, you can use pre-made guacamole as a shortcut. Just make sure it's a guacamole version that you enjoy, as some store-bought options might be spicier or contain different ingredients than the homemade mashed avocado with lemon and cayenne.

Easy and good. I did add a little cheese and diced yellow onions. Cayenne pepper was a nice/needed ingredient.

This was amazing. I already had guacamole in fridge, so I used that on Dave's Killer Bread. Drizzled evoo on toast, added guac, fried egg, fresh Jersey sliced tomato, pickled red onions, and topped with Jane's Krazy Salt. OMG so good and filling.

Made this for my husband who needs to avoid salt right now. It was good but salt definitely kicks it up a notch. For him, I omitted salt and added a bit of onion powder and minced garlic (the kind that is jarred in water) for a fully sodium-free version. (Minus what was in the bread, of course) He loved it. Thank you so much!

Loved it perfect as is or tweak as you may. Sour dough buttered and pan toasted both sides. Mashed avocado with red onions and a splash of lemon juice. I would use pepper jack next time to give it an added kick. Thanks for getting me started with this recipe.

Delicious! I've never made avocado toast before so this was super helpful, easy to follow, and turned out perfectly. Side note: used garlic salt instead of sea salt also.

Kid friendly. I have two that love avocados. So this is a winner. I put some shredded cheese on top. I used guac already prepared from Taco night.

Not the biggest fan of avocado, but this is good! It helps to add a spoonful of salsa to the avocado. I put pepperjack cheese on the egg.
