Cook Time: 20 minutes

Skip the freezer aisle and make this tater tot recipe at home. Theyre so much more delicious than the store-bought stuff!

How to Make Tater Tots

You'll find a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions below, but here's an overview of what you can expect when making homemade tater tots:

  • Boil, then drain, the potatoes.
  • Shred the potatoes and drain the excess moisture.
  • Mix the potatoes with parsley, flour, and seasonings.
  • Shape the mixture into tots.
  • Fry the tater tots until golden and crispy.

Tater Tot Ingredients

These are the simple ingredients youll need:

  • 2 medium russet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned pepper
  • teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 cups peanut oil (for frying)

Directions

  1. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and cool for 10 to 15 minutes, until easily handled.
  2. Shred the potatoes using a box grater, then drain off any excess moisture.
  3. Transfer the shredded potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Add the parsley, flour, salt, seasoned pepper, and onion powder. Mix until well combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into 1-inch long potato nuggets (tots).
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 350F (175C). Carefully lower the potato nuggets into the hot oil in batches, about 5 to 10 at a time.
  6. Fry the tater tots for about 3 to 4 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining tots.

Test Kitchen Tips

  • Dont overcook the potatoes. If you boil them for too long, they wont shred easily.
  • For a quicker version, you can skip the boiling step and microwave the potatoes instead.
  • If you have a slotted spoon, use it to lower the tots into the hot oil to avoid splashing.

The directions here are spot on. Boiling the potatoes first is an important step to get the perfect consistency for shaping the tots. This is obviously more time consuming than just opening up a bag of frozen ones but these are fun to make and you can control what spices go into them. I plan to play around with the flavors and even make spicy tots. I froze half of the batch to use at a later date and I am going to try baking them in the oven for a healthier alternative. I will update my review once I do.

I baked mine in the oven. Preheat oven to 425°. Grease a mini muffin pan with olive oil spray. Put 1 tablespoon of potato mixture into each muffin. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Spray at again with olive oil mixture. Flip potatoes in muffin tin. Bake for 12 more minutes until crispy.

I oven baked mine, and did some substitutions, but the end result was tater tots! Oven baking: 425 degree oven. Spray mini-muffin pans with oil. 1 tablespoon of mix in each space. Bake for 15 minutes. Carefully remove temporarily (I used a fork) and respray the pan. Flip the tots and put back for 13 more minutes baking. Results are crisp. I did a mixture of potatoes, turnips, and sweet potatoes for a mixed root vegetable tot.

A little laborious, but VERY TASTY. This recipe only works when you fry the tots IMMEDIATELY. Don't make them in advance and let them sit. If you do, the exterior will get leathery. or they may just fall apart.

Really like tater tots so this receipe caught my eye. One thing I had trouble with was grating the cooked potatoes. They crumbled instead of into thin slices. Might have cooked them to long? Ended up soft mashing then made sure there were pea size clumps. Followed the rest of the instructions but added granulated garlic, onion powder, cayenne and dry dill . Also cut down on the salt. They came out great. My family didn’t notice the potatoes weren’t shredded. Lol

I loved this recipe, my granddaughter doesn't like tater tots but she loved these. The recipe calls for a tablespoon of salt, I used a teaspoon and I added a teaspoon of garlic powder, it was a hit the first time I cooked them.

Excellent recipe as written! I shaped mine into thick disks and topped each one with creme fraiche and caviar. A definite winner with my football Sunday crowd! I will certainly make again and experiment with other toppings and dipping sauces.

I dont deep fry my tots. I brown them up on a cast iron skillet and then place in a 350 oven

Excellent. They took about 10 min. to turn brown when cooking. They form nicely in the palm of the hand. Use half the salt. Finally a TT that I could eat that was healthy. Used canola oil.

Great recipe, great seasonings! Missed a star for peanut oil, I’ve made this with both beef tallow and duck fat, there is no comparison and will blow the peanut oil out of the water!

Prepared this recipe staying as close as possible to the instructions. It was spur of the moment so I used vegetable instead of peanut oil & they were still very good. They passed the scrutiny of my 10 year old's expectations of her school's tater tots, which she loves! I'm sure I will be making these again.

I don't get how several people misread the 1 teaspoon of salt for 1Tablespoon! East to follow recipe, definitely a far cry from frozen. The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars was the prep time was a little off. They were tasty though. A fun treat as they don't have tater tots here in Honduras. Sadly... we don't have Cool Whip either!

Made these for the Super Bowl. Easy and delicious. Nice potato flavor. Not too greasy. Very nice homemade tater tots. They all disappeared. I will make this again with my home-grown potatoes in May.

I baked in muffin tins lined with paper to avoid all the oil. They stuck to the paper. Won't make it again...not that tasty.

I loved it. My husband as well. Only it turned out a bit salty. Next time I'll adjust that amount. My only question is, it says 4 servings but how many pieces are in each serving? How many ounces are each piece? Other than that, i will be making this again.
