Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Recipe

Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Recipe

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 tablespoons chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella), or more to taste, at room temperature
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out one puff pastry sheet into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Lightly score the puff pastry in the shape of a Christmas tree (a triangle with a wide base).
  4. Spread a thin layer of chocolate-hazelnut spread over the triangle using the back of a spoon.
  5. Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry to a large rectangle and place it on top of the first one.
  6. Carefully trace the shape of the chocolate-covered triangle underneath and cut out the Christmas tree shape, including the trunk. Discard any excess pastry.
  7. Lightly score two lines down the middle of the triangle to form a tree trunk that is narrower at the top and gets wider at the base.
  8. Using the trunk as a guide, cut branches into the sides of the triangle.
  9. Twist the branches away from you, aiming for two turns on the lower branches. Continue twisting upwards as you move to the higher branches.
  10. Cut a small star from the excess pastry and place it on top of the tree.
  11. Brush the star and the entire tree with the lightly beaten egg.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffy and golden brown.
  13. Let it cool for about 5 minutes before transferring it to a serving plate, using parchment paper to assist if necessary.

A friend made this the other day for an afternoon tea break and we gobbled it up. It was delicious! So I went and bought puff pastry and nutella (actually, the store brand) and just made two trees this afternoon. So quick and easy that I didn't even need to refer to the recipe. If I had, I might have remembered the egg wash--but even without it came out beautifully. Hint--zap the nutella jar for 10 seconds so it spreads easily. Go ahead and just slather one entire sheet of puff pastrywith nutella on a piece of parchment on a cookie sheet. Ease the top pastry on. Then cut the center triangle. Use the two half side triangles to make a second tree. Seal the two sides together on top with fingers dipped in water. This is a new family favorite!

This was so easy! However I cooked down fresh strawberries with a tbs of sugar and used it for filling. I also spread cream cheese on the dough before adding the strawberries. Yum! Next time I may drizzle melted dark chocolate over it!

It was so easy to make (I used a package of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls…used the 2-halves when making the triangle into the top layer of the tree (also made the trunk and star with the scraps) and added sprinkles after brushing on the egg wash! Just love how it turned out! Plus, it slipped easily off the parchment paper onto a serving platter. Thank you for the recipe!!!

This is deceptively easy! Read up about how to handle puff pastry if you are unfamiliar before starting, as it would be a shame to crack your pastry sheet. I used the two excess triangles from the sides to create two smaller herbed cream cheese trees made in a similar fashion and those were so delicious! This is best served right out the oven. I brought it to a party and it fared okay but ideally right out of the oven would be best. Now i am thinking of all the combos, pesto/ricotta, ham/cheese, chorizo/cilantro. So so simple and delicious.

I switched it up a bit to make it more festive for Christmas. I didn’t want to waste the dough, so I created small little presents to put under the tree, then topped it off with the dusting of powdered sugar. It was a huge hit.

I added freshly roasted crushed hazelnuts and Skor bits to the Nutella before laying on the top pastry. It made for a richer filling. It was very popular. I will be making it again for Christmas. With the extra dough I rolled it into a rectangle, added the filling, joined the ends to form a ring than scored the top to make a wreath.

Impossible to transfer without using something underneath the puff pastry but paper tore easily. Instead of parchment paper I use the non-stick foil instead on my large cookie sheet. Knife cut the paper so use a pastry cutter with a crimped Edge -worked great !

SUPER easy to make-took longer to finish cooking for me-about 5 minutes longer-total of 20 minutes. I did cover with foil the last 5 extra minutes. I took it to a Christmas party and everyone LOVED it. I did use powdered sugar on top and also green sugar for decoration. It added a little sweetness as well which I thought it needed. Thank you SO much for the recipe. :)

This is so easy and is always such a hit! Tip: Warm the Nutella in the microwave for 15-20 seconds before spreading -- otherwise, it's difficult to spread evenly.

Not a fan of Nutella. Would jam or other filling work as well.

Easy to make and delicious! It was the perfect midday Christmas snack. I put strawberries and bananas as ornaments.
