This delicious, mildly spicy blend enhances the taste of various dishes such as pasta, shrimp, chicken, fish, and much more. If you've never made your own Cajun seasoning at home, you're missing out on better flavor and significant savings. Homemade Cajun seasoning not only tastes fresher, but its also more affordable than store-bought versions!
What Is Cajun Seasoning?
Cajun seasoning hails from Louisiana, the birthplace of Cajun cuisine. Its a fusion of Native American, West African, Caribbean, and French cooking influences. The seasoning combines earthy, spicy, and sometimes smoky flavors, creating a distinct taste that's perfect for a variety of dishes.
Whats in Cajun Seasoning?
Typical Cajun seasonings, including popular store brands like Slap Ya Mama and Tony Chacheres, are made with black pepper, white pepper, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Some variations may include salt, mustard powder, chili peppers, or cumin. This homemade recipe also incorporates oregano and thyme, which arent usually found in traditional Cajun spice blends they are more common in Creole seasonings.
Cajun Seasoning vs. Creole Seasoning
Creole cuisine also originates from Louisiana, but its a blend of African, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish cooking traditions. Creole seasoning typically includes more herbs than Cajun seasoning, often with basil, thyme, oregano, and sometimes rosemary or parsley. While Cajun seasoning is spicier with a more robust flavor, Creole seasoning offers a lighter kick with a focus on aromatic herbs.
Cajun Seasoning vs. Blackened Seasoning
Blackened seasoning is somewhat of a hybrid between Cajun and Creole seasoning. Its spicy, thanks to cayenne or chili powder, but it also contains herbs like oregano, thyme, and basil. The key difference lies in its application: Blackened seasoning is used when cooking meat or seafood thats coated in butter and seared, creating a blackened crust on the outside. Cajun seasoning, on the other hand, is typically used for flavoring without the crusting technique.

This mix is a fantastic addition to your pantry. I tried it with mahi-mahi tonight, and the flavor was absolutely outstanding. I decided to enhance it by adding a teaspoon of smoked paprika for an extra kick. My husband thoroughly enjoyed it too! I made extra for future use. Next, I plan to try it on chicken breast, and I'm confident it will be just as mouthwatering.

I am extremely thankful for coming across this amazing website and seldom do I leave reviews. However, I felt the need to express my thoughts this time. I discovered that this recipe was simply too salty for my liking! While I typically enjoy using salt to enhance the flavors in my dishes, this particular one turned out excessively salty, almost to the point where I considered discarding it. If you have a high tolerance for salt, you might not find it overpowering; however, for those who prefer a milder taste, I recommend reducing the salt by at least half.

I completely eliminate salt from my diet. I've been working on reducing my sodium intake and had to give up buying Cajun seasoning because it contains so much salt! By making my own seasoning, I have the ability to manage the sodium content while still savoring the flavor. I use it in dishes like Red Beans and Rice, jambalaya, as well as on popcorn and corn on the cob!

Extremely simple to prepare and use. I mixed it into alfredo sauce and the result was fantastic. I added some extra cayenne for a bit more spice, just to suit my taste preferences.

Rewritten review: I absolutely love this seasoning! I've tried it on both chicken and pork, and it always turns out incredibly delicious. The combination of flavors is just outstanding! When I ran out of regular paprika after using a teaspoon, I switched to smoked paprika for the remaining 1.5 teaspoons, and now I always make it that way. One thing to note is that I personally found 3/4 teaspoon of salt to be more than sufficient. For those trying this recipe for the first time, I recommend starting with half the salt and adjusting to taste next time.

I would like to decrease the amount of salt slightly as one of us needs to watch our salt intake.
