Homemade Dog Treats (Peanut Butter and Pumpkin)
Your furry friend is an important member of the family, and that means they deserve homemade treats too! Sure, you can go out and buy a box of dog treats, but these Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats are made with love and they're just as easy to make as making a batch of cookies. Reviewers have rated these homemade dog treats 5-stars over 800 times, and your pup will definitely give it two paws up too!
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 large eggs
- cup canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin puree, not pie filling)
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (ensure it's Xylitol-free)
- teaspoon salt
- teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon water (optional, to adjust dough consistency)
How to Make Homemade Dog Treats
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350F (175C).
Step 2: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, eggs, canned pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon. Use a spatula to mix everything until fully combined.
Step 3: Transfer the mixture to a work surface and begin kneading it by hand. As you knead, the dough will start to come together. If the dough is too dry or stiff, add water, one teaspoon at a time, until its workable, but don't overdo it. The dough should remain firm and not sticky.
Step 4: Roll out the dough to a thickness of about inch. You can use a rolling pin for evenness.
Step 5: Cut the dough into -inch pieces using a knife or your favorite cookie cutters to make fun shapes.
Step 6: Place the cut pieces onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until the treats are golden brown and crunchy.
Step 8: Let the treats cool completely before serving them to your dog. This is important to prevent any burns!

"Two sets of very large paws up! Both my wolfhounds love them. I found it much easier to work with if I added only 2 cups of flour and used the remaining cup to add gradually as I worked the dough. This helped with the 'sticky' problem," says Icequeen.
"My dogs love this recipe. They smell them cooking and get excited. I usually double the recipe so I use a whole small can of pumpkin," according to Michael Behrens.
"Added some extra peanut butter, because my puppy loves it. Otherwise, these are SUPER easy, and a huge hit with my fur baby! Fantastic recipe," raves sidvicious1961.

AWESOME TREATS!! I changed the pumpkin amount from 1/2 cup to 1 full heaping cup and it did the trick! My dough was PERFECT! I kept the cinnamon (I FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT) I made smaller cookies so I left them in for only 15 minutes. They came out golden brown and smelling YUMMY! My dogs ate them up!

Had to tweak it slightly as my pugs are allergic to chicken including eggs. Since I did not use eggs and subbed with Apple Sauce no sugar and I changed from whole wheat flour to 1 1/2cups Brown rice flour and 1 cup Tapioca flour. Also since I was making it without eggs I used the whole can of pumpkin and 3 Tbl spoons of fresh ground peanut butter from Sprouts to avoid any sweeteners that dogs cannot eat. The dough came out perfect for smashing into silicone molds with a scraper. My pugs are not a fan of cinnamon so I left that out as well, they do like Chicory root so will use that in the next batch. Baked it in silicone molds for 40 min then let them cool enough to pop out of molds and let them completely air dry inside the oven as it cooled to remove any excess moisture. Smashing hit and replaces expensive all natural dog treats that use preservatives like Tocopherol. Only used a 1/3 of the dough and vacuum sealed and froze the rest so I can bake 1 batch a week for 3 weeks.

Great basic recipe for treats. I've been making homemade treats for years.. this is about as quick and easy as it gets. I made a big batch... A 15oz can of pumpkin and about 1 cup of natural peanut butter. Substituting brown rice flour due to wheat allergies. (Tip... Save $ by using uncooked Rice or oatmeal processed in a blender or food processor rather than paying big bucks for store bought rice or oat flour.) 2 eggs including shells, also processed in the blender. Added some turmeric and vitamins, cinnamon, and baked 30 min at 350 then turned the oven off, leaving them in the oven to cool down. An hour later they were crunchy and my 3 Schnauzers were lined up waiting to taste test them... A real keeper !

To make sure the cookie is crunchy, I add steel cut oats. This also helps in the next process. After cooking, I put them in my dehydrator, for 6 hours on 350. It draws ALL the moisture out of the cookie, making them crisp and crunchy. Plus, they last for months and months.

My dog LOVED these. I used silicone bone molds (the tiny bone ones) so I had to make a wetter sough. I added plain kefir. Doubled the amount of pumpkin based on Sarah's review & Baked for 40 minutes. Perfection. Also, I totally overbaked one batch, and guess who didn't care? The dog! She snarfed 'em down. No refund requested. To the person who said cinnamon is toxic to dogs: This recipe has 1/2 a tsp for the ENTIRE batch! You'd have to feed your dog more than 2 entire batches to get close to toxic levels. I think the dog would have issues than cinnamon after eating 5 cups of flour.

I have been making this for a few years.I had to change the recipe by omitting the eggs because my granddaughter can't eat or handle egg products because she is allergic. I replaced the 2 eggs with chia seeds. I add 2 tbsp of chia seed with 6 tbsp of water and let the seeds sit in a bowl with the water and when I'm done adding all the ingredients I mix in the seeds. They come out just as good as if I used eggs!

I used 3 small local eggs instead of water. The outcome is better. Doesn't make the paper so wet. Threw a little wheat flour on surface like making biscuits. Great time saver . Btw, if you try to make more than you need, moisture comes into play on any recipes. Also, my husband dipped one in peanut butter and loved it !!

These treats were a big hit with my dogs. I added an extra cup of wheat flour, and one little container of unsweetened applesauce, along with about 4 tablespoons of organic milled, flax and Chia blend for extra nutrition, and then put them in little molds and baked them that way.

Super easy recipe to follow and make. I increased the pumpkin to one full cup and peanut butter to three tablespoons. I also used a tablespoon of apple sauce with three additional tablespoons of flour. Perfect dough texture. Our three dogs love the treats!!! Yay!!

I added chia and a little sprinkle of oats my dogs are really picky with dog treats. I've spent $$$ on treats they turned their nose up to. But they love these biscuits! Cheaper to make you can add blueberries, spinach, cranberries and it fresh, natural my dogs love them!

My Baxter is extremely finicky and very particular about what he eats. A friend recommended I try these and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve now made him his sixth batch. I found they get moldy within a week so I now put them in a sealed container in the refrigerator and they last two weeks before it’s time to make them again. I’m so grateful for this recipe and that I know all the ingredients in it. Highly recommend
