Taco in a Bag Recipe

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
  • 4 (2.5 ounce) packages corn chips
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 chopped fresh tomato
  • cup sour cream
  • cup salsa

Directions

  1. Gather all ingredients and prepare your workspace.
  2. In a large skillet, cook and stir the ground beef over medium heat until its browned and crumbly, which should take about 7 to 10 minutes. Drain off any excess oil.
  3. Stir in the water and taco seasoning mix. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. While the beef mixture is simmering, gently crush the corn chips while they are still sealed in their bags. Snip one top and one bottom corner off each bag, then carefully cut open along the side edge.
  5. Once the beef is ready, spoon an equal amount of the beef mixture into each bag on top of the crushed corn chips.
  6. Next, add a layer of shredded lettuce, followed by shredded Cheddar cheese, chopped tomato, sour cream, and salsa. Layer the ingredients in the bags evenly to ensure every bite is delicious.
  7. Serve the taco-in-a-bag directly from the bag, using a fork to enjoy! Its a fun, easy, and delicious meal.

I really like the idea behind these meals, but I think they are a bit too small for my family. Also, the cost of the individual bags can add up. What I do instead is buy a large bag and divide it into individual servings in a reusable container. I then top each serving with the remaining ingredients, excluding the sour cream, until just before serving. This way, we can easily take these on the road as a tailgate meal when driving to camp, using plastic utensils and napkins for convenience. In camp, we follow a similar approach but serve them on plates or in bowls. For a healthier option, try substituting ground chicken or turkey.

I made this dish using cheddar cheese sauce instead of shredded cheese and served it on plates instead of in bags. It was simple to prepare, turned out delicious, and was very satisfying.

I made these for my grandchildren and they were pleasantly surprised and excited that there were no dishes to clean up. They were a big hit and tasted delicious. We customized ours with our favorite toppings and even tried adding refried beans and a bit of chili a few times. They were very easy to make and enjoyable. It was a lot of fun for the kids.

The children absolutely adore this recipe! We decided to use Doritos Nacho cheese chips in ours.

I omitted the tomatoes, but it was a hit with everyone! I will definitely be making it again.
