Fried Brussels Sprouts Recipe

Fried Brussels Sprouts Recipe

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon, cut into bite-size pieces
  • onion, diced
  • 1 (12 ounce) package fresh Brussels sprouts, trimmed and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste (Optional)
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Step 1: Place the bacon pieces in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, which should take around 7 to 10 minutes. Once done, drain the bacon on paper towels, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.

Step 2: In the same skillet, cook the diced onion in the bacon grease until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3: Add the Brussels sprouts to the skillet and toss them in the bacon grease. Cook and stir until the Brussels sprouts are browned and tender, which should take around 5 minutes.

Step 4: Stir in the sugar (if using), salt, and black pepper. Finally, sprinkle the cooked bacon pieces over the Brussels sprouts and give everything a final stir.

Cooks Note

For a milder flavor, I like to add a little sugar, especially when cooking for kids. However, the dish is also fantastic without the sugar. I often omit it and they never notice!

I have indeed made this recipe and it was quite delicious as written. The second time I made it, I added about a dozen julienned baby carrots for color and omitted the sugar altogether, as the carrots imparted the sweet balance. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipe!

Great recipe! I caramelized the onions in a little EVOO under low heat, then stirred in brown sugar (subbed for white sugar), and 1/8 tsp each of ginger, nutmeg, and paprika, then added the cut-up bacon and continued cooking. Meanwhile, I prepped the Brussels sprouts and cut them in half and nuked them for 2 minutes (they were LARGE and I didn’t want them to be undercooked). Then added the Brussels sprouts to the pan, added pepper (omitted the salt due to dietary restrictions). Last touch—added a pat of butter, covered the pan for 2 more minutes, and that’s it. The family loved it!!

Add one medium diced sweet potato (microwave on potato setting first). Super good!

Have made this several times as a side dish, one of the favs of my fire crew. BUT I add several good dashes of Red Wine Vinegar... the taste of bacon, sugar & vinegar is awesome... Do kind of the same as a salad.. Red Leaf Lettuce & large slice onions.. fried crisp bacon (chopped), add sugar & Red Wine (garlic) vinegar, in bacon grease, heat up quickly then pour it over the red lettuce/onions... some sourdough... goes with both...

This was absolutely delicious! I partially screamed the Brussels spouts before frying them in the bacon grease, and used honey instead of sugar. No salt needed because of the bacon’s saltiness...super easy and sooo good.

Turned out terrific. Prepared in my cast iron pan. I did not have bacon, but I did have bacon grease so the flavor was still achieved (bacon pieces would have been yummy though!). I also added a tablespoon of maple flavored siracha. Some people mentioned that they omitted the sugar so I tried it without, then added it. It is a small amount of sugar and it helps soften the flavor a bit. I will definitely make again!

Delicious!! These are a frequently requested side dish in my household--even by my 2 & 4 yr olds. I omit the sugar. I just throw everything into the pan at once with a dash of olive oil and cook it all at the same time. Sometimes I sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top before serving. Super yummy recipe!

I've made this with the bacon/bacon grease and don't get me wrong, it's fabulous, but if you want to healthy it up, this dish is also delicious sans bacon, using olive oil and reduced sugar. The key is to char the brussel sprouts a bit. Love this recipe.

Very easy for an old man (88). About enough for 4 people. Can they be stored in the fridge or freezer, please. I also do half a dozen in the microwave for three minutes. Scrumptious either way.

I don't care for sprouts but these were pretty good. I followed the advice of a reviewer and used wine to steam a little and added a splash of balsamic vinegar instead of sugar.

I rated this a 5 because my kids said to. They were crazy about it! BUT, that's because I added minced fresh garlic to the pan at the same time as the sprouts. And more than half an onion. And some fresh mushrooms I needed to get rid of. May try red pepper flakes next time. Either way, it's a keeper!

Awesome recipe. Instead of sugar, I added Hoisin sauce. Also used a little Siracha sauce to spice it up. Highly recommend!

What is easier than this side dish? I've made it with a splash of a sweet white wine and with brown sugar but my favorite is to drizzle it with a good balsamic vinegar. When it reduces it becomes glaze-like and gives it such a beautiful tart sweetness.

Before using this recipe, no one in our house would eat Brussels sprouts. They were so so good. This will be a regular side for us from now on. I’m even thinking of adding fresh, sliced mushrooms to the recipe.
