Steak 'n' Fries Salad Recipe
Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
- 1 pounds sirloin steak
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
- Cooking spray
- 1 (16 ounce) package frozen seasoned french-fried potatoes
- 13 ounces romaine lettuce, torn
- 1 cucumber, sliced
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced
- 1 cups croutons
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions
Step 1: Rub the sirloin steaks with vegetable oil and season generously with salt and black pepper. Allow the steaks to come to room temperature by letting them rest for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Preheat your outdoor grill to medium-high heat, and lightly oil the grill grate. Preheat the oven to 400F (200C), and prepare a baking sheet by spraying it with cooking spray.
Step 3: Spread the frozen French fries evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the fries are slightly browned.
Step 4: While the fries are baking, grill the steaks on the preheated grill. Cook the steaks for 6 to 8 minutes per side, or until they begin to firm up and are hot with a slightly pink center. For best results, use an instant-read thermometer; the internal temperature should reach 140F (60C).
Step 5: Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest on a cutting board. Meanwhile, in a large salad bowl, combine the torn romaine lettuce, sliced cucumber, and sliced hard-boiled eggs.
Step 6: Once the French fries are done, pile them on top of the salad mixture. Cut the grilled steaks into bite-sized pieces and arrange them on top of the fries.
Step 7: Top the salad with croutons and shredded mozzarella cheese. Serve immediately for a delicious and hearty meal.
Tips
Cook's Notes: If desired, you can substitute tuna steaks or chicken for the sirloin steak.

I am familiar with how tasty this dish is since I reside in Pittsburgh, and it closely resembles our usual way of enjoying steak or chicken salads (except for the croutons, which I skipped because my husband isn't a fan). If you haven't experienced a salad topped with steak or chicken along with fries, you are truly missing out and it's a must-try...SOOOOO GOOD! We typically dress it with either Italian or ranch (occasionally both) - YUM!!!!! Appreciate you sharing this recipe. :)

Review rewritten: I'm not sure whether the fries on the salad or the fries on the sandwich came first. According to Primanti's, it's the influence of the sandwich. Either way, the key is to prepare the steak "Pittsburgh" style, which means searing it on the outside and keeping it rare/raw on the inside. The only suitable dressing is Italian (not creamy) or simply oil and vinegar. Thick-cut fries are ideal, but if you're using frozen crinkle-cut fries, they work too. The combination of romaine lettuce and fresh mozzarella adds an elegant touch, whereas I grew up having iceberg lettuce and shaker cheese. My mom was able to stretch a 1-pound steak to feed all six of us.

I have been enjoying this traditional W.PA salad since the 1970s. It includes salad, diced cooked steak, hot fries, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, and finally heated Italian salad dressing drizzled over everything! This combination is simply unbeatable!

I create a variation of this dish. I prepare a salad by combining my choice of meat and vegetables with greens, but instead of fries, I opt for extra crispy, golden-brown tater tots. To finish it off, I usually drizzle it with my homemade thousand island dressing.

We reside approximately an hour south of Pittsburgh, and many restaurants in our vicinity offer this dish. Often, they utilize flank steak or London broil sliced into thin strips, along with carrots and diced onions. It is essential to ensure that both the fries and steak remain warm to allow the cheese to melt when layered on top. Personally, I prefer mine with Sweet and Sour salad dressing, while my partner enjoys any kind of Italian dressing. Appreciations for sharing the recipe!!!
