Leftover Ham Bone Soup
Ingredients
This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.
- 6 cups water, or as needed
- 3 cubes beef bouillon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 (10 ounce) meaty ham bone
- 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed, or more to taste
- 2 small onions, roughly chopped
- 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- teaspoon ground cloves
Directions
Step 1: Fill a large soup pot with enough water to cover the ham bone, but dont add the bone yet. Bring the water to a boil.
Step 2: Once the water is boiling, add the bouillon cubes and salt. Use a spoon to crush the bouillon until dissolved.
Step 3: Add the ham bone to the pot, followed by the potatoes, onions, kidney beans, turmeric, and cloves. Stir the mixture to evenly distribute the spices and bring it back to a boil.
Step 4: Lower the heat to medium-low and let the soup simmer. Continue cooking for about 1 hour, or until the ham is heated through and the potatoes are tender enough to be pierced easily with a fork.
Step 5: Remove the ham bone from the soup. Shred the meat from the bone and discard the bone. Return the shredded meat to the soup and stir.
Step 6: Serve hot and enjoy!
Cook's Note
While waiting for the water to boil, you can chop the potatoes and onions. Once all ingredients are added to the pot, feel free to multitask - whether its putting up laundry or quickly preparing some biscuits to accompany your soup!
