Homemade Grain-Free Dog Food Recipe

Homemade Grain-Free Dog Food Recipe

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

This recipe was developed at its original yield. Ingredient amounts are automatically adjusted, but cooking times and steps remain unchanged. Note that not all recipes scale perfectly.

Original recipe (1X) yields 10 servings:

  • 4 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 2 apples - peeled, cored, and chopped (make sure seeds are removed)
  • cup water
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 pounds ground chicken
  • 6 ounces chicken livers, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons sunflower seed oil
  • 4 cups baby spinach leaves

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  2. Place carrots, apples, and water into a pot. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer until soft, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, crack eggs into a bowl and set aside. Place the eggshells onto a baking sheet and bake them in the preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes, until dry.
  4. Remove the eggshells from the oven and pulverize them using a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder.
  5. In a large skillet, combine ground chicken, chicken livers, the reserved eggs, ground eggshells, and sunflower oil. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is browned and crumbly, and the livers are no longer pink (about 5 to 7 minutes).
  6. Place spinach on top of the meat mixture, then cover with a lid and steam until the spinach is soft, about 5 minutes.
  7. Once the carrots and apples have softened, mash them in a bowl with a potato masher, then add them to the meat mixture. Stir until well combined.

Recipe Tips

  • Use organic apples to avoid pesticides. Be sure to remove all apple seeds, as they are toxic to dogs.
  • Store three days' worth in an airtight in the refrigerator. Freeze the remaining food in three-day portions. Defrost in the refrigerator on the first day of use.
  • Heat each portion for 45 seconds in the microwave and let it cool before serving.

How much should I feed a 35 lb dog on this recipe? I'd really like to switch to this as I feel like it might help my dog and honestly it sounds like it might be money saving.

My 11 yo rescue chiweenie loves this! We use olive oil instead of sunflower. For a treat every now and again, we'll sub half the oil for peanut butter. We've used different types of meat, but always the same quantity. Lean beef, turkey, pork, fish, and once Veggie beef, because it was all we had. We always add some bone broth. We'll sometimes switch out the spinach with kale, depending on what we have. Sometimes we add pumpkin puree. When we did this, we subbed half of the carrots and apples for the pumpkin. We add the ground up eggshells to each meal, not as a whole. When it comes to how much to give, it was recommended to me that they get 100 grams per every 10lbs. That's about 3.5 oz, or just a smidge under half a cup. YMMV. 10 lbs - ½ cup, 2x a day 15 lbs - ¾ cup, 2x a day 20 lbs - 1 cup, 2x a day 25 lbs - 1¼ cups, 2x a day 30 lbs - 1½ cups, 2x a day 35 lbs - 1¾ cups, 2x a day 40 lbs - 2 cups, 2x a day 45 lbs - 2¼ cups, 2x a day 50 lbs - 2½ cup, 2x a day 55 lbs - 2¾ cup, 2x a day Our pup is a licker, so this is good to puree and put on a lick mat every once in a while. I'll freeze this in bricks in gallon-size bags, like the hack for ground hamburger. I break a couple of bricks off and keep them in the fridge to defrost. Most of the time we'll warm it up for a few seconds in the microwave. But, if we've just come in from the heat, he likes it cold.

I’m pretty new to making dogfood. This is a great base, but I’m adding ground flax seed, chia seed, cinnamon, ginger, & turmeric. Maybe more as I continue my research. (1/2 tsp of each flax, chia & turmeric. 1/4 tsp cinnamon & ginger added to each meal.

After trying multiple grocery brand dog foods and realizing my puppy was allergic to grains and knowing my 13 year old dog was seriously overweight I decided to try this recipe out. I spent lots of money on different food which they both refused to eat. I made this, doubled the recipe and added sweet potatoes and substituted green beans for the spinach. They BOTH ate every bite and wanted more. It was worth the cost and effort just to see them both happy, licking their bowls clean and knowing it was healthy for them!

My dog LOVES this recipe. I wanted her off dog food and onto good quality food and to lose a bit of weight if possible. Everyone is asking how much to feed homemade food. I have researched this and a good rule is: dogs weight in poundsX10grams. So if your dog is 50 lbs that would be 500grams per day and you would divide it into 250grams per feed. That’s what I’m doing however my dog is about 80lbs and I want her to be 60-70 lbs so I’m feeding her the grams for the desired weight. I confirmed this with my vet and he was happy with this plan. She seems much more satisfied on this food! Thank you for the recipe. The only thing I did differently is used peas instead of spinach because I know she likes peas. And instead of the sunflower oil I added a dog omega oil supplement and a dog multivitamin supplement on top right before each serving.

I used sweet potatoes instead of carrots and green beans instead of spinach. I doubled the recipe. I used diced beef roast and pork loin. I also used beef liver instead of chicken because my dog is allergic to chicken.

My dog is obsessed with this recipe. She is a blue staffordshire terrier and will stand next to me wagging her tail until I feed her. She has much more energy and it seems to be helping her fur hot spots she has developed in her older years. I put just shy of a tablespoon of olive oil and sunflower oil mixed in with each serving. This is what has shown signs of her fur improvement. I would have to say she is a fan of this meal. I am happy to see her happy 😊

I found baking the ground meat and then adding the eggs and cooked veggies and eggs to finish baking was the easiest.

My brothers dog loves this recipe and seems to have so much more energy. I would like to switch my dog, but she has allergies, what can I use instead of chicken livers and sunflower oil? Thank you

My dogs love this, but I have no idea how much to give them.. They weigh 12# each. The recipe shows how many servings (10) in the recipe but no indication of how many ounces is 1 serving. I suppose I could have weighed it all, then divided by 10, but it's way too late for that now. Please advise.

My dog loves this. It’s easy to make. It’s definently worth the time and Nala (my Dog) has food allergies and she has been on this food for a month now and has quit scratching practically all together now. Affordable too.

I love this all natural and good food recipe. What are the feeding guidelines based on weight? My dog weighs 25lbs. and I'm not sure how much to feed her.

When I first started making my dogs food it was because he was being sick from both ends, took him to Dr and he said he is just old! I wasn’t happy, either way it took Buster at least 2/3 weeks to stop with the diarrhea, but the throwing up stopped sooner! This is a great recipe for your dog, please allow your dog enough time to get all the bad out and let the food in! Can’t do anything to his system in just 4 days, it took I’m guessing years to get in his system! I hope this helps. I love my Buster 🐩
