French Fried Onions Recipe

French Fried Onions Recipe

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 large onions, sliced into thin rings
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch garlic powder, or to taste (Optional)
  • 1 pinch onion powder, or to taste (Optional)
  • 1 pinch ground white pepper, or to taste (Optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions

  1. Soak the sliced onions in milk for 5 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, white pepper, and salt.
  3. Take a handful of onions and toss them in the flour mixture until they are well-coated. Repeat this process for the remaining onions, adding them one handful at a time.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer over medium heat.
  5. Fry the onions in batches. Stir them occasionally to ensure they cook evenly. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Once fried, remove the onions and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Season with additional salt to taste while the onions are still hot.
  8. Store the fried onions in an airtight for later use.

Cooks Note

If you're making a smaller batch, you can scale the ingredients down. For example, try using just 1 onion with cup of milk and 1 cup of flour. This is perfect for when you only need a small amount for one dish. Be warned, though you might end up eating more than you planned!

I made a smaller portion using 1 onion, 1/2 c milk and 1 c flour. I made them with canola oil in the air fryer and they came out delish!

Loved this! I was in a super hurry for a quick batch and didnt' have the onion powder or garlic powder, so I made it with just one onion (per the instructions in the intro, above) using only milk, flour, salt and pepper. Fantastic! Others in the kitchen tried a taste fresh from the fryer and LOVED them! Thanks so much for posting this recipe.

Absolutely delicious!!! I even substituted gluten free flour (Bob's Red Mill brand) and they turned out perfectly! I will definitely make these again.

perfect for a gluten free version. I made with arrowhead mills gluten free baking mix, and fried in coconut oil. Very tasty but not as crispy as the store bought version, maybe due to the gluten free mix.

I cut the recipe in half and ended up needing to use a little extra flour. It’s true, I couldn’t stop eating them when they were done.

I made these for a green bean casserole and had extra to snack on. My family devoured the extras and asked if I can make this all the time so they always have some to snack on, lol! For some reason it took a lot longer than the time the recipe called for for them to brown and become crispy, but that just might have been my oil not being hot enough.

They were not to difficult to make. We loved them and so did our family.

I was skeptical amount the amount of onions it called for since I only make my casserole in a loaf pan, but they were so good, I had to hide them from my wife so I still had some for Thanksgiving!
