Self-Rising Flour Recipe
If you're looking for a homemade substitute for store-bought self-rising flour, you're in the right place! This easy recipe requires only a few basic ingredients, saving you from any last-minute trips to the store.
What Is Self-Rising Flour?
Self-rising flour is a type of flour that already contains leavening agents, so there's no need to add baking powder or baking soda separately when you're baking. It ensures your baked goods rise perfectly every time. Originally created by an English baker, Henry Jones, in the mid-1800s, self-rising flour was made to help sailors bake better on long sea voyages.
What's In Self-Rising Flour?
You can make your own self-rising flour with just three simple ingredients, all of which are likely already in your kitchen:
- Flour: Regular all-purpose flour serves as the base.
- Baking powder: Add 1 teaspoons for its leavening power, turning your regular flour into self-rising flour.
- Salt: teaspoon salt balances out the flavors and completes the mix.
How to Make Self-Rising Flour
Making self-rising flour at home is a breeze. Just follow these easy steps:
- Step 1: Gather all your ingredients - all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Step 2: Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together to ensure even distribution. This step is crucial for the best results.
- Step 3: Once sifted, your homemade self-rising flour is ready to use in your favorite recipes.
How to Use Self-Rising Flour
Now that you have your homemade self-rising flour, you can use it to make a variety of delicious baked goods. Here are some ideas:
- Quick and Easy Peach Cobbler
- Grandma's Moist Cake
- Cathead Biscuits
- Two-Ingredient Pizza Dough
- Easy Beer Batter
How to Store Self-Rising Flour
Store your homemade self-rising flour in an airtight in a cool, dark place. It should remain good for about a year, so you can always have it on hand when you're ready to bake.

I always use this recipe for any self-rising flour recipes--this is the same one that Grandma taught me to use when I was just beginning to cook. Why spend almost three bucks for a package when you already have the ingredients on hand?

I notice that many recipes now call for self-rising flour which I never buy. So 2 cups of flour, 1 Tbs of baking powder, and 1 tsp of salt. (How many recipes call for one cup of flour?) Works for me and I am glad you published it.

WORKS PERFECTLY. I, TOO, DO NOT KEEP SELF-RISING FLOUR IN THE HOUSE, IN FACT, I'VE NEVER BOUGHT ANY MY WHOLE LIFE! (54) I MAKE 8 CUPS OF THIS AT A TIME, 4TBSP BAKING POWDER AND 4 TSP SALT, PUT IN AIR TIGHT CONTAINER AND KEEP IN THE PANTRY. SO GLAD I FOUND THIS RECIPE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING IT!

I needed self rising flour for a recipe I was making and looked up on this web site how to make it. I found that this recipe is too salty. After tasting my recipe, I looked up another site and it said to use 1/4 tsp salt for a cup of flour. The amount of baking powder was the same. Next time I will use half as much salt.

I used half unbleached and half whole wheat pastry flour and I used this to make whipping cream biscuits. It worked perfectly! They were light, tender and fluffy.

I've had to toss partial bags of self-rising flour over the years because I buy them, use a little, and then the baking powder fails by the time I get to the end of the bag. This will help me salvage the partial still on the shelf by adding new baking powder in the right ratio. I'll never buy another bag again.

This totally ruined my cookies! It's way too much salt and my cookies were still flat unlike when I used self raising flour. I'm a seasoned Baker plus it's a recipe I've used countless times before.

Very good recipe for self-rising flour! I tried making biscuits 3 times before I realized I missed the part where it had been calling for self-rising and I had been using all-purpose! Oops! The fourth time I made them, I used this recipe before attempting and the biscuit babies finally came out all grown up! Haha. Anyway, this is a tried and true recipe and I recommend it as is. May all of your biscuits rise to the occasion.

Turned out very well. It was just as good as the prepared self-rising flour. Also much less expensive!
